Volvo Auto India registers record growth of 188% in January

Swedish luxury car maker Volvo Auto India has registered a record growth of 188% in January 2013, compared to the corresponding period last year. It sold 75 cars in January 2013 as against 26 units in January 2012. The highest ever year-on-year (YoY) growth was primarily driven by sales of Volvo S60 (luxurious sporty sedan) and Volvo XC60 (A technologically advanced compact luxury SUV).

Commenting on the performance, Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said, “We are very happy to have a great start to the New Year. We closed 2012 with almost a 150% annual growth and now a very promising start of 2013 with another record 188% YoY growth in January. We are overwhelmed with the faith our customers and dealer partners have bestowed on us. We would continue with our strategic associations and expansions in the country as we believe that India holds tremendous potential for our brand and want to make sure that we fully capitalize on the opportunities available while providing the best possible services for our customers with the best value at the most competitive prices.”

Re: Volvo Revamps Strategies To Answer Back Germans (Merc, Audi, BMW)

Volvo to focus on India’s luxury car market, plans to set up local assembly unit

Swedish automaker Volvo, which has carved out a niche for itself in the premium bus segment but didn't do too well with its car brand, is now planning to focus on the luxury car market, and even toying with the idea of setting up local assembly operations.

Volvo Auto India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volvo Car Group owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group of China, is preparing a longterm strategy for India to gain more volumes in the 30,000 units a year luxury car market.

"We are competing against stronger German rivals who have put up a huge distribution network that's aided by local plants to roll out cars at lower taxes. But we have to import cars by paying higher taxes. So, it'll make sense to assemble our cars locally to pass on the benefits to our customers and increase our share in the Indian market," said Volvo Auto India MD Tomas Ernberg.

But the Swedish parent company is yet to clear any assembly facility in India and has not finalised any fresh investment plans so far. Tomas didn't give any kind of time frame for selecting a location for the planned local assembly unit in India and said that headquarters would take a call in due course.

Volvo was among the first to enter India in 2006, much before many of its global rivals like BMW and Audi, but failed to capitalise on its first-mover advantage. It sold just 812 cars in 2012 while BMW sold 9,375 units and Audi, the last to enter India, sold an impressive 9,003 vehicles the same year, 63% sales growth over 2011.

Auto experts say that the Swedish car maker would continue to face challenges in the Indian market. "There's stiff competition in the luxury car space. BMW leads the global luxury car market as well the India market. Same is the story with Audi and Mercedes Benz in the pecking order. Volvo has not gained in any markets or country so far and a resource-constrained company may not have an easy run in India either," said a Delhi-based auto analyst working with an MNC consultancy.

It is believed that the changes in the global ownership may have somewhat upset its Indian growth plans: the ownership changed from Volvo AG to Ford Motor till the Chinese took over the enterprise in 2010.

Backed by an Asian management, Volvo now plans to revamp its car offerings and also add a new authentic brand experience for customers. "We are realigning our dealership network as well as introducing new products with smaller and fuel-efficient engines," added Ernberg.

Currently, Volvo has seven showrooms in India and would open three more in Delhi, Bangalore and Gurgaon this year. It also plans to introduce the V40 Cross Country in the Indian market that's expected to be priced close to the entry-level models from the German luxury carmakers.

The V40 Cross Country will be imported and deliveries of the car are likely to begin by May this year.

Lol. When did Made In India become cheaper than Made In China ? [lol]
Or perhaps Indian Govt levied anti-dumping duty on it !!

This means V40 will also be yet another flop. And with launch of Merc A class, BMW 1 series & Audi A3, V40 may not get space even for parking, if at all it sells. [lol]
Damn Chinese.

Volvo opens dealership in Bengaluru, aims to sell 200 units in the city this year

Volvo Cars India has inaugurated a new dealership in Bengaluru thereby improving its geographical coverage.
Sitting over an area of 7,000 square feet, the showroom owned by Martial Motors is located near race course. The outlet is the first in the state for Volvo.
With the Bengaluru dealership in place, the Swedes target to sell around 200 units in the city this year.
The garden city, being an IT hub is a popular market for luxury cars. Volvo Cars could take advantage of the good brand image it already has among the Bangaloreans owing to the extensive presence of Volvo buses in the city transport corporation.
Last year, Bengaluru’s luxury car market clocked around 2,000 units and this year it is expected to increase to 2,500 units. Volvo is hoping to cash in on the growth with its lineup of two sedans (S60 and S80) and two SUVs (XC60 and XC90). Come July, the fifth product, the V40 Cross Country would be launched. Volvo is likely to put the refreshed S60, S80 and XC90 on to the Indian market by the end of the year.
Speaking during the inauguration of the showroom, Mr. Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director of Volvo India stated, “Entering Bengaluru signifies our presence in the key market for luxury cars in India.”
Volvo already has presence in South Indian cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore and Kochi.

VOLVO CARS INDIA COULD USE VOLVO TRUCKS’ FACTORY OFF BANGALORE TO KICKSTART CKD ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS

Volvo is said to be mulling CKD assembly of its cars. Instead of going it alone in India and building an assembly facility from scratch, Volvo is said to be scouting for a partner whose facility it could use for assembling its cars in the country. One such partner is said to be Volvo’s truck and bus making sibling, which runs a factory that builds buses and trucks at a location off the Southern Indian city of Bangalore.

Finally Volvo is considering a local assembly plant in India

Just when Volvo Cars India started to be bullish about their prospects in India, the Union Budget 2013 served a sucker punch with the 25% hike of import duty on luxury cars that are imported as CBUs.

Government’s unexpected move has caught the Swedish automaker off guard whose entire portfolio is being imported as CBUs. In order to build up the momentum, it is high time for Volvo to consider a local CKD plant.

NDTV Car & Bike Show host MR. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar reports that according to sources at Volvo’s Gothenburg HQ, the company is on a look out for a potential local partner. The strategy is to join hands with someone who already have a facility in place so that Volvo could save investment and time.

It is reported that the first prospective candidate for the partnership is Volvo AB, the truck maker. Both the firms use the same name and company logo and that is where the relation ends. The car business is owned by Chinese automaker Geely while the truck wing remains as a Swedish entity.

It is to be noted that Volvo AB has a joint venture with Eicher to build medium and heavy commercial vehicles. Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles has a plant in Bengaluru which could be utilized.

With total sales of 820 units last year Volvo is still a minor player in the Indian luxury segment while the Audi and BMW managed over 9,000 units. A local assembly plant would help Volvo augment its Indian operations.

Re: Volvo Revamps Strategies To Answer Back Germans (Merc, Audi, BMW)

Volvo car division has announced their first brand ambassador for the Indian market - Jeev Milkha Singh, a well-known Indian golfer. This news should not be surprising considering Volvo’s long-term association with golf. Jeev is the first Indian player who joined European Tour in 1998. He was also the first to break into the top 100 in October 2006 with a career best position of 28th in the world ranking. He was honored with the Asia Pacific Lifetime Achievement Award at 13th edition of the Asian Golf Monthly Awards which is widely regarded as the region's premier annual poll of golf.

Tomas Ernberg said:
The association came in very naturally to both of us and we came in to the synergy. Both Volvo Cars and Jeev Milkha Singh represent perfection and continual growth. Volvo and Jeev share enduring association since April 2006 when he won the Volvo Master and became the second Indian player to win on the European Tour. Further strengthening our relationship we are extremely proud to announce Jeev Milkha Singh as our brand ambassador. As a part of this association Jeev will be driving the Volvo XC90 that will provide him safety, comfort, luxury and ample boot space for his Golf sets.
Jeev Milkha Singh said:
I have a long standing relationship with Volvo, it is not just a luxury car but an emotion. I am excited to be a part of the Volvo Family and today I stand proud to be representing Volvo Cars as its Brand ambassador. I redeemed my career by winning the Volvo Masters in 2006 making my country proud by being the first Indian to win in Europe and since then have not looked back.
A few important notes from the event:

> Volvo V40 Cross Country is officially coming this June in India.

> Volvo is looking to expand their dealership network across India.

> They will kick start by opening up showrooms in Bangalore (Martial Motors), Gurgaon (Swede Auto) and Kolkata shortly.

> The swedish carmaker has managed to sell 276 units in the first quarter of 2013. Translating into growth upto 140% in comparison to 2012.

> They have no immediate plans to locally assemble cars in India. Though Volvo aims to sell 20,000 units per annum. By then, it will be considered.

Volvo Cars open its first showroom in Bangalore

The Scandinavian beauty has rolled into Bengaluru with Volvo Cars opening its first Showroom in the city on the Race Course Road. Spread over an area of 7000 sqft., the showroom gives a true Scandinavian luxury experience. Martial Motors Private Limited owned by Mr. Saket Talwar and Mr. Ritesh Reddy is fully equipped with state-of-the-art tools, equipment and necessary spare parts and will offer an enhanced purchase experience.

Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said, “The year 2013 has been very promising for us. In January, we began the year with record sales of year-on-year (YoY) growth of 188% and recently closed the first quarter ending March with sale of 276 cars. This is yet another indication of Volvo Cars increasing strength in the Indian auto market as well as the continuing acceptability of our products amongst the patrons. March was a successful month for us, despite a challenging market and circumstances. This is our first dealership in Bangalore. In line with its growth, Volvo Cars will continue with its expansion plan in India by adding to its existing network of dealerships across the country. We will touch a count of 12 dealerships with three showrooms opening in this quarter. With continuously increasing demand, Volvo Cars aims to bring its quality services closer to the customer. We aim to serve our customers better through greater accessibility.”
I can't believe Volvo took so many years to open an dealership in Bangalore.
