New Arteon executive saloon will be revealed at the Geneva motor show next year, and will go on sale in the summer.

To be a segment above Passat in Volkswagen's line-up, the Arteon is one of the first all-new models to come from the VW brand since the emissions scandal which engulfed the company last year and which lead to group's restructuring over the last 12 months.

As part of that look, the Arteon will come with a larger front grille and LED lights with 3D styling. VW says the car's frameless windows "reflect the typical stylistic elements of a grand tourer" while a large boot features at the rear.

Announcing the car, Volkswagen Exterior Designer Tobias Sühlmann said: "At first sight, the Arteon arouses enthusiasm through its expressive deisgn. It then surprises through its practical virtues. This combination is unique."

New sporty Volkswagen Arteon R-Line Edition uncovered

14_27.jpg

Volkswagen has revealed the Arteon R-Line Edition. Orders are open now, with production for the sporty trim level of the Passat’s coupe-like relation limited to just 1,000 units, with prices starting from £36,850.

As with other VW models dressed in the R-Line trim, the Arteon gets a range of cosmetic upgrades to separate it from the lesser models. Most notably is the colour scheme: the Arteon’s body is finished in Moonstone grey complemented by a contrasting black finish for the roof, door mirrors, and the 20-inch alloy wheels. Privacy glass is standard, while to the rear there’s a small black lip spoiler on the boot lid and a pair of chrome-effect tailpipe-like trims

Inside, the Arteon R Line Edition gets full nappa leather trim and the winter package as standard, which includes seat heating for the outer rear passengers. Adjustable ambient lighting also features, as does a 12.3-inch ‘Digital Cockpit’ - VW’s customisable instrument panel.

Buyers get a choice of one petrol and two diesel engines. The diesel range starts with a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with 187bhp; above it sits a twin-turbo variant with 237bhp and 500Nm of torque. The petrol option is the most potent: the 2.0-litre turbo petrol is essentially a detuned version of the engine used by the Golf R. Here, it makes 268bhp and is matched to a four-wheel-drive system. Every version is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Hot 2020 Volkswagen Arteon R spied at the Nurburgring

2020 Volkswagen Arteon R spied.jpg

This is our first look at the new Volkswagen Arteon R as the hot saloon undergoes the final stages of development testing.

The performance version of the Arteon appears to be carrying very little in the way of camouflage, although some sections of the nose and rear bumper have been obscured by panels and tape.

The car appears to have been lowered slightly for sportier performance, while the alloy wheels have adopted a more dynamic design. Underneath, blue brake calipers are visible, strongly suggesting that the Arteon R will have greater stopping power when it reaches the UK.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen unveiled the Arteon R-Line Edition: limited to just 1,000 examples, it used a detuned, 268bhp version of the 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine that’s set to feature in the Golf R later in 2020. It’s likely that the Arteon R will get the same power unit, but it remains to be seen if it will harbour its full potential of 328bhp.

The R-Line Edition is already capable of 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, so it’s likely that the Arteon R will break the five-second barrier for the sprint with the extra power at its disposal.

As is the case with the Golf R, it’s expected that the Arteon R will use the same seven-speed automatic gearbox, with no manual on the cards. It’s also overwhelmingly likely that it will boast four-wheel drive.

New Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake teased as part of 2020 facelift

VW Arteon teaser-3.jpg

Volkswagen has released an official teaser image for a facelifted version of the range-topping Arteon saloon, which will be joined by a shooting brake estate later this month when the two new models are revealed.

VW Arteon teaser.jpg

This teaser image offers our first glimpse at the updated Arteon’s design and, by the looks of it, Volkswagen’s styling revisions for the standard car will be subtle in execution. The saloon in this sketch features an updated front bumper with new air intakes, tweaked LED headlamps and a revised radiator grille, while the shooting brake will incorporate a rakish estate rear end.

Inside, Volkswagen says the revised Arteon will be given an all-new cabin layout, which uses the firm’s latest MIB3 infotainment system. Details are yet to be confirmed, but we expect the new interior technology will comprise a 11.7-inch digital instrument binnacle and a 9.2-inch infotainment system – as found in the recently updated Volkswagen Passat.

Volkswagen has also confirmed the Arteon will be available with a new “Travel Assist” semi- autonomous driving mode, which the company says has been designed with long-distance journeys in mind. Under the driver’s supervision, the system can assume control of the vehicle’s steering, acceleration and braking on the motorway at speeds up to 130mph.
