Volkswagen MotorSport announced their choice of weapon for the 2012 Polo R Cup in India – the TSI Race Polo and also the 20 drivers who will be driving the car. In its third season now, the Polo R Cup had always had cars using diesel engines. The new 1.4-litre TSI motor produces a phenomenal 182PS of power at 6200rpm and 250Nm of torque between 2000-4500rpm as opposed to the 131PS that the 1.6-litre TDI makes. The petrol engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic twin-clutch DSG box. Volkswagen Motorsport officials say that the shift from diesel to high performance petrol engines is an attempt to match international racing standards.

For the 2012 season, participants have been slotted into three categories : Junior, Pro and Master. The Junior category will have drivers aged between 16-26 with a driving experience limited to eight races or less in the last five years in National Championships. Drivers selected for Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2013

The proceedings for the fourth season of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup kick started with the driver selection process held at Kari motor speedway, Bangalore. A total of 35 drivers participated and after a couple of days and undergoing various tests, 13 were chosen out of the lot who would join the previous season’s drivers.

Day one of the selection procedure saw the participants undergoing brief introduction on the modifications that had been done on the cars as well as all the necessary information on the controls of the car. Then, the competitors were shown some basic braking and slalom exercises so as to judge their car control and responsiveness. All the exercises were done on the circuit under the guidance of stalwarts like multi-national karting champion Rayomand Banajee and national racing champion Arjun Balu. All the participants were then briefed on various aspects of track driving, racing line, brake markers and were then sent for two timed laps around the circuit. At the end of the session, 24 out of the 35 drivers were shortlisted.

Day two was reserved for improving techniques and some fitness tests. The 24 drivers were then put through more driving sessions and were judged on various aspects. Most important of them being the willingness of the participants to grasp and implement all that the coaches had taught, onto the track.
