Toyota Looking To Localise Hybrid And EV Technology In India

For a long time Toyota Motor Corporation has been focusing on electrified vehicles. It stepped into a partnership with Suzuki and Denso in 2017 and decided to come up with a battery plant in Gujarat. Now hybrid and electric vehicle technology are still on the upper side of the cost structure which is why even hybrid vehicles haven't gain as much popularity in India. That said, moving forward carmakers are expected to include more electrified vehicles in their range in a bid to reduce emissions and meet the upcoming CAFE (corporate average fuel efficiency) regulations which caps the overall fuel consumption of the entire product portfolio. Electrified cars can become more affordable if critical components are manufactured locally, hence Toyota is looking forward to it.

In a bid to reach out to its customers better, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced the launch of its first regional stockyard in India located in Guwahati, Assam. The regional stockyard ensures a leaner and more efficient distribution network and will help reduce the delivery time on the vehicles. In fact, Toyota says that for Guwahati and the regions nearby, the delivery time has been dropped from the current 13 days to a maximum of two days in the North-Eastern states, owing to the new stockyard.

The new regional stockyard will not only enhance distribution efficiency but also reduce inventory cost and the turnaround time for dealers. It allows dealerships to focus on boosting sales and after-sales requirements. At present, Toyota has 13 customer touchpoints in the North-East, which includes the two new 3S (sales, service and spares) facilities that were opened in Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh and Imphal in Manipur respecitvely. More recently, the automaker expanded its service presence pan India with 87 new Pro-Service centres with one located in Jorhat, Assam.

Toyota announces finance schemes on all models, including Urban Cruiser

Toyota Kirloskar Motor on Thursday announced the launch of finance scheme offers for the month of November in a possible bid to bolster sales prospects in the festive period. These offers are valid on its entire product portfolio in the country, including the recently-launched Urban Cruiser sub-compact SUV.

The finance schemes announced by Toyota include a low EMI scheme for the first the first six months and an EMI holiday option for three months for customers. Notably, there is an assured buy-back option rolled out on Yaris and Glanza.

Toyota states that the idea behind the finance schemes are to ensure that customers won't have to push back their purchases. "These finance schemes will enable customers to live their dreams of owning a Toyota vehicle and ease the process of car buying with an assured peace of mind," informed Naveen Soni, Vice President, Sales and Services, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, in a press statement. "Another such scheme that we have been running since last month, allows our customers to avail a Special Cash Package offer alongside the ‘Leave Travel Scheme’ as announced by the Govt. of India."

Toyota sales have been steadily improving since the days of national lockdown when it faced a whole lot of hardships as its plant near Bengaluru was first shut due to nation-wide restrictions and then due to local restrictions stemming from being in a 'red zone.'

The car maker sold 12,373 units in the month of October which was growth of 52% last month vis-a-vis September. (Read full report here)

A sizable chunk of the credit may go to the Urban Cruiser which, the company informs, has been received well in the market. Now, Toyota would look at continuing the momentum, especially because festivities this year extend into November.

TKM sells 8801 units in domestic sales in the month of June 2021
Clocks a cumulative growth of 107% in the first half of 2021 when compared to the same period last year
Bangalore, 1st July 2021: Toyota Kirloskar Motor today announced that the company sold a total of 8801 units in the month of June 2021, thereby registering a growth of 128% when compared to the domestic sales in the month of June 2020. Having resumed production at its plant on June 15th, the company has been focusing on catering to the pending orders of customers. TKM’s plant at Bidadi in Karnataka was shut owing to a scheduled annual plant maintenance starting 26th April, which was then further extended as a result of the state-wide lockdown was announced by the Govt. of Karnataka. For reference, TKM had reported wholesales of 3866 units in the month of June 2020 and 707 units in the month of May 2021. The cumulative wholesales of TKM in the first six months of the calendar year 2021, stands at 59332 units when compared to 28686 units sold in the corresponding period last year, thereby registering a growth of 107%.

Commenting on the monthly sales, Mr. Naveen Soni, Sr. Vice President at TKM said, “Having resumed production with a 50% workforce last month after the gradual unlock in the state of Karnataka, our immediate goal was to cater to the pending orders of our customers. Although our dispatches only began by the third week of June, we have been able to register a 128% growth over domestic sales in June 2020. In terms of demand, we are witnessing good traction in the market arising out of ‘pent up demand’ and thereby leading to good levels of enquiries and new customer orders. We also anticipate retail sales to be better in the coming months, provided that the pandemic doesn’t pose newer challenges at us.

Having said that, we must bear in mind the fact that, relaxation of restrictions across states have not been uniform and hence the process of unlocking has been gradual and intermittent. Accordingly, our dealerships have been opening up sporadically and amidst various restrictions, including limitations pertaining to the number of manpower working at a time as well as the manhours of work they put in. Here, we must also take into consideration the fact that not just the auto industry, but as a country we are now coming out of a very difficult phase and it will take some time for the industry and the market to bounce back. Moreover, we are also focusing on vaccinating both our employees as well as their families and extending our support to have our dealer and supplier staff vaccinated too, so as to ensure lower risk & severity of infections. In fact, companywide, 96% of our employees have received their first dose of vaccination and we are in the process to complete vaccination for all our employees, including the ones ‘working from home’, concluded Mr. Soni.

Toyota Kirloskar has announced extension of warranty on Hybrid Electric Battery (Camry & Vellfire) from existing 3 Years / 1,00,000 Kms to 8 Years / 1,60,000 Kms w.e.f. 1st August 2021.

Toyota-SHEV-Battery-Warranty.jpg

Press Release:
In line with its commitment to encourage the adoption of electrified vehicles, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced the extension of battery warranty for its Self-charging Hybrid Electric Vehicles (SHEVs) in India. The warranty is extended from the existing three years or 100,000 kilometres to eight years or 160,000 kilometres (whichever comes first) for all its SHEV models – Toyota Camry & Vellfire, sold with effect from August 1, 2021. The announcement also coincides with the important occasion of “World Nature Conservation Day” observed across the world this day of 28th July.

In keeping with our principle of ‘Respect for the Planet’, Toyota announced the ‘Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050’ in October 2015 comprising of six environment challenges, including the goal to achieve lifecycle zero carbon (CO2) emission that goes well beyond zero carbon emissions from our new vehicles and manufacturing activities thus reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to build a better, smarter, more sustainable future, creating a net positive impact on the planet and society.

In pursuance of this guiding principle to realise carbon neutrality by 2050, Toyota continues to create and develop advanced technologies and provide world-class products and services that fulfil the needs of customers in the most sustainable manner. Building upon that experience, TKM has also continuously strived to introduce innovative schemes and offers to enhance customer delight.

TKM’s new 2021 hybrid electric vehicle battery warranty is the longest warranty period offered in the industry and is available to all the owners of Toyota SHEVs. The latest move is yet another initiative by TKM to catalyse the shift from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles to SHEVs and ultimately to a wide range of electrified vehicles as practical and accessible mobility solutions in the future. As a pioneer in hybrids and a global portfolio spanning all electrified technologies, TKM was the first carmaker to bring hybrid electric vehicles to the Indian market with products such as the Prius and Camry. Today, the Toyota Camry and Vellfire are successful in gaining customers’ confidence and trust in brand, encapsulate Toyota’s class defining self-charging hybrid electric technology, comfort, elegance and sustainability, thus paving the way for the adoption of other electrified technologies in the future.

Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Mr. V. Wiseline Sigamani, Associate General Manager (AGM), Sales and Strategic Marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “Toyota has been at the forefront of global vehicle electrification for more than two decades now. In India too, TKM was among the first automakers to introduce SHEVs in the market. Self-charging Hybrid Electric Vehicles, which have both a petrol engine and electric powertrain, are extremely environment friendly, while requiring no behavioural changes at the customer’s end. Hybrids can run 40% of the distance and 60% of the time as an electric vehicle with a petrol engine shut off, as proven in a study by iCAT, a Government testing agency. This gives hybrids tremendous fuel efficiency improvements of 35 to 50% and much lower carbon emissions. In India, over the years (cumulative), sale of Toyota Camry Hybrid vehicles alone has resulted in CO2 emission reduction of over 18 million kilograms and fossil fuel savings of over 7.6 million litres.

With customers being the first priority, Toyota has been unceasingly striving to offer diverse service schemes. Through the longer battery warranty, which is the most comprehensive coverage in the market today, we continue to bring many smiles and peace of mind to customers buying a hybrid electric vehicle and enhancing the momentum of vehicle electrification in the country.”

Electrified vehicles play a critical role in sustainable development by reducing fossil fuel consumption, mitigating local air pollution and by helping to address climate change. Globally along with BEVs, SHEVs are ushering in a new era of mobility with growing customer acceptance towards more efficient, cleaner, and greener technology. Today’s consumer profile for SHEV is evolving, from early adopters and technophile purchasers, as they quell range anxiety, tackle the challenge of charging infrastructure while protecting the environment. Significant improvements in technology and a wider variety of electrified vehicle models on offer have stimulated consumer preferences. This will transform mobility in the years to come and shape the future of vehicle electrification.

TKM’s aspiration is to contribute towards mass electrification with ‘make in India’ not only for India but also for global markets. Toyota firmly believes that all electrified vehicle technologies are necessary to create a vibrant local EV manufacturing base, thereby hastening the pace of adoption of cleaner and more efficient mobility. Our electrified vehicle strategy centres on xEV portfolio of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to suit the needs of the consumers and market.

Further, existing 4th generation SHEV customers (for purchases made January 2019 onwards) are being offered similar warranty benefits at a special offer price.

For more information on the new extended warranty, customers can reach out to their nearest Toyota dealership. They may also refer to the Toyota Warranty and Maintenance Booklet provided during a new vehicle purchase (effective August 1, 2021).
