Dashboard fit and finish is top notch. This layered dashboard in top variant looks uber cool. Even my test car's interiors in daytime looked awesome.

In-cabin visibility. The dashboard reflection on the windshield is bare minimum and this is a major plus point of Innova Crysta. Also, The hood is visible from inside and this helps in judging and keeping the right distance from on-coming traffic. The A pillar also is not obstructive as such and there is minimal blind spot and the ORVM viewing space is also good. Lastly, The rear visibility also is not a issue even with raised head-rest.

In-Car Entertainment Unit of Innova Crysta.

Toyota Innova Crysta comes equipped with a 7inch Touch Screen in top spec and the navigation is operational thru a SD Card. The screen operation is quite simple and the menu is easy to understand. The reaction time from the moment you select a specific function/option on the screen is also very fast. The unit does seem good in features and layout and the sound quality is good too but not overwhelming as one might be expecting. In this post you can also check out the sound quality of ICE Unit. As you may note in the pics attached that even if there is sunshine/daytime, the display of the touchscreen does not get lower. It is perfectly readable. Here's what all features you get in the touchscreen.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta A.T Drive Review

Boot Space of Toyota Innova Crysta.

In this Innova Crysta, firstly, I found the boot door to be quite heavy and strong and about the boot capacity, it is 300 liters with all the 3 rows upright but the same can be extended to about 900 liters with the 3rd row being folded and the same can be seen in the pics attached and if 2nd&3rd row are folded the luggage space capacity doubles up. Another good feature given by Toyota to the Crysta is the individual headrest holder in the 3rd row which houses the headrest removed by passenger. Moving on, as can be seen in the pics, there are clips provided for the un-used seat belts (arrow mark) as well. Furthermore, There is proper housing made for the tool kit as well which is lockable too. The boot lock is also properly designed and looks quite durable. The boot door gets hydraulic arms and proper cladding on the inside which not only enhance the aesthetics but also helps reduce the metal rattles that might occur. Another interesting feature which was shown to me was the 'Easy Close' feature of the boot. So, the feature is that, as to ensure that the boot properly closes every time, all one has to do is to latch it to closing position and then it gets into the slot and shuts properly ensuring that there is no rattling while on drive. Also, there is a small button (arrow mark) next to the boot latch, which also enables opening and closing of only the boot in the event if all doors are closed. So, seeing these features and the level of ergonomics by Toyota for even the boot space, I can easily that the boot is very well designed and even well carpeted.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta A.T Drive Review

Engine, NVH & Transmission

The all new Toyota Innova Crysta is offered in 2 Types of Engines i.e Diesel and Petrol in 3 capacities i.e 2.4L & 2.8L for diesel and 2.7 L for Petrol. There are 2 options for transmission i.e Manual and Automatic. The Manual Transmission is a 5 Speed unit where as the Automatic is a 6 Speed Sequential Shift Unit. Both units are meshed to 4 Cylinder Petrol and Diesel engines. Talking of the Torque and Power figures of the Petrol and Diesel Engines; The Diesel mill gives power of 150PS and 174PS where as the Petrol engine delivers 166PS of power. The torque offered by Diesel unit is 343Nm & 360 Nm where as the Petrol engine offers 245 Nm of Torque.

All 3 Engines in pics: 2.4L, 2.8L & 2.7L

Driving Manners of 2.7L Petrol Engine.

20160820_160958.jpg

Coming to the Drive, This review is essentially about the driving manners and performance of the Petrol 2.7L Engine of Innova Crysta with Automatic Transmission. The Diesel Innova was still unregistered in Delhi. So, I had a good long drive in the Innova Crysta Petrol. As I drove, I could sense the engine to be struggling in acceleration and the gear shifts could be felt easily. The gear shift in the petrol Innova Crysta came with a slight jerk. The power delivery in ECO mode was fine enough to pull the car in city traffic and upon switching the power mode, there was slight improvement and the acceleration became smooth and the car drove with much more agility. The 245 Nm of Torque was ample enough though to pull the car cleanly through on the highway as well. However I do feel, Toyota should not have come with this engine because its practically useless to have such a big Petrol engine in India where people are fuel efficiency conscious. A 2.0 L Petrol engine with a more refined transmission would have been sufficient. Coming to the NVH part, when I cranked the engine, I had the driver's door open and mind you, the engine NVH that time was too harsh. A bit of idle revving made it much worse. However, upon closing the doors and windows properly, the NVH levels dropped significantly. While driving on the highway, I kept the speed at 70-80 km/h, there absolute comfort in this range with regards to NVH as well as no wind noise entered the cabin too. This engine performed best in power mode in my view. I took the car to 3500 rpm and to my surprise there was no distortion of engine sound on highways. The only issue and kind of rough edge was the AT box of the car. This made the drive just a simple one whereas I was really expecting it to be a fabulous and exciting experience. Toyota does need to give a thought to this particular transmission and rework on it.

There is ample cladding under the hood which also helps in controlling the NVH and Engine sound as well as absorbing the heat of engine but the Innova Crysta diesel misses on the under engine cover.

Ride & Handling, Steering, Braking, Suspension and Tires.

Innova Crysta is a large vehicle and to maneuver it there has to be precise and fast feedback from the steering wheel which I can say is there in it. As I drove it for a good 35 kms so it was quite evident to me that the steering was giving a positive and precise response. Having driven the car in both Eco and Power mode, I feel, the steering response in Eco mode was very good. However, of all the plus points of the steering, a small issue was it's stiffness while parking on the road's corner. Apart from this, through out the traffic and turns on the highway, it was a breeze to drive on the even surfaced roads. The steering is really confidence inspiring at speeds of 70-80 km/h and the car remains steady at high speeds. Moving on, the ride quality of Innova and it's handling has always been a decent one so even the Crysta is no different. It does offer a planted ride otherwise but over the rough patches the jerk is quite pronounced which I feel should have been double checked this time by Toyota. The brakes are really quick and have a good bite. Upon braking on the highway at 60-70 km/h the brakes accurately responded and the car halted in real time without any abrupt twist and turns but yes the body roll is there and its significant. Innova Crysta though I drove it in 70-80 speed range but having sat in previous generations of Innova, I feel, the best of an Innova comes out when it's driven on highways with a speed range of 90-100 km/h and by many it's driven even on 3 digit speeds. The 215 section tires offer excellent grip on the roads however, there is slight bit of road noise in the cabin while driving. I believe a reason for this can be the missing wheel arc cladding too which if present helps in modulating the road noise to an extent. As I mentioned, Innova Crysta has a turning radius of 5.4m so for a MPV of it's size, there is sizable amount of effort needed to turn it at some places in comparison to other rival MPVs even though Innova Crysta has tall stance and better in-cabin visibility. I say this with my experience of driving an Ertiga. Small but important features like a dead pedal also help in making the drive a fatigue-free experience. Overall, I can say that, Innova Crysta is a capable MPV for the highways and for city traffic it is has a satisfactory performance of suspension but otherwise its a viable city drive car as well.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta A.T Drive Review

The two Icons in their own segments. Both are from 2 different but Japanese Automotive brands. Also, Toyota Innova and Honda CITY have over the generation retained their popularity and even their position in the market. Innova has evolved over the time and so has Honda CITY. The sales figures are a proof of their immense popularity among the buyers. The D4D Diesel of Toyota and the I-Vtec engine of Honda have been truly a benchmark of reliability and performance.

After checking out the new Innova Crysta on multiple occasions and after driving it I feel that for the price it has been offered by Toyota, one gets lot of car for that money. I would say, price wise if we see, variants of XUV-5OO & Hyundai Creta also come under this price range but the features and comfort which you get in Innova for a similar type of price is nowhere else to be found. I mean upon seeing this one, I was thrilled at the sight of it's sheer length.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta A.T Drive Review

Features of Innova Crysta I liked. This list includes some specific pics too!

Easy Slide for the 2nd row seat: This lever (shown in pic) is placed on front passenger seat and is indeed a valuable feature as it helps in increasing the rear legroom for 2nd row.

20160825_122725.jpg

Traction Control: For a big MPV like Innova Crysta and even otherwise too, traction control is helpful. It prevents the wheels from over-spinning on wet roads and at sharp turns too. Also it should be kept ON if possible always by the driver for better stability and safety.

20160825_123110.jpg

Lock & Unlock mechanism provided on front passenger side for the airbags.

20160825_122854.jpg

What could be better. In couple of pics!

The seat pushing lever under front seat. It is a bit tight and slight effort is needed.

20160825_122835.jpg

The Glove box plastic is just average.

Toyota Innova Petrol

Today I got chance to take ride in Toyota Innova Petrol in Bahrain. I have following observations.

1. Car was very compact. It is difficult to fit three normal adult on the middle seat.

2. Middle row was higher than than front row.

Now this is contradictory to the Innova Diesel test drive I took in Pune.

My question, is there any dimension difference between petrol and diesel Innova?
