Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced that the Etios series - Etios and Etios Liva - has clocked sales of one lakh units. The company has achieved an important milestone since they entered the mass volume market in India. The Etios was launched in December 2010 followed by Etios Liva in June 2011. Etios sold 50,157 units in the financial year 2011 - 2012 , making it the third largest selling sedan in its segment.

Etios - ‘World First, India First, My First’ is Toyota’s first product made especially for the Indian market. TKM forayed into the export market with the first consignment of Etios shipped to South Africa in April 2012. The company plans to export 20,000 units of Etios series per annum. To cater to the growing demand, the company also plans to ramp up the production of the Etios series in its second plant at Bidadi , from the current production capacity of 1,20,000 units to 2,10,000 units in early 2013.

The domestic production of engine and transmission for the Etios and Etios Liva will be carried out at Toyota Kirloskar Auto parts. Approximately 100,000 engines will be produced per year starting in the third quarter of 2012 and approximately 240,000 transmissions per year starting in early 2013. With the production of these critical parts, the localization ratio for Etios, currently around 70%, is expected to cross 90%.

In its endeavor to reach out to maximum customers after the launch of the Etios and Etios Liva, the company has expanded its dealer network from 97 dealerships in 2009 to 175 outlets currently. The company further plans to expand it to 220 dealerships by early next year. TKM is looking at improving its reach and is targeting at setting up 25 additional outlets out of the targeted outlets in semi urban and rural areas this year.

Commenting on the occasion Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director, TKM said “With the launch of Etios, TKM embarked on a very important and challenging journey and this is an important milestone. We thank the one lakh happy customers who have trusted the brand and also appreciated it. Despite unforeseen and unfortunate events like tsunami in Japan and the floods in Thailand, we have been able to achieve the One Lakh mark. We wish to give the common man an opportunity to drive a Toyota vehicle and we look forward to serving the Indian society by making more quality vehicles.”

Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Marketing, TKM added “We are delighted to touch the One Lakh mark. The number reflects how the Etios family has grown and how Etios and Etios Liva has become a household brand in India. Customers have owned and appreciated the vehicles and we are constantly incorporating their feedback to be able to serve them better. This is a small yet very important milestone in this large project that will place TKM on a higher pedestal in the global operations of Toyota.”

Japanese auto major Toyota would begin engine production from its manufacturing facility in Bangalore next month, according to a top company official. “It will commence next month,” Toyota Kirloskar Deputy Managing Director Shekar Viswanathan said when asked about their plans for the manufacturing facility. Toyota plans to manufacture about 100,000 engines and 240,000 transmission units from the facility.

Toyota Kirloskar is a JV between Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, and Kirloskar Systems, Bangalore. Last year, Toyota Kirloskar had announced it would set up an engine plant and expand its transmissions unit to cater to its latest sedan Etios and hatchback Etios Liva, with a combined investment of Rs 500 crore.

On the exports of Etios and Liva, he said 1,500 units had been shipped to South Africa. “We have commenced exports to South Africa from Ennore Port (near Chennai),” he said. Viswanathan was here to participate in National Conference on Chennai and Bangalore Industrial Corridor (CBIC), organised by Assocham and the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Recalling the Automotive Mission plan announced in 2006 needs to be “enmeshed” with the CBIC, he said there was a need to increase connectivity with ports. “India is becoming the base for export of small cars and that is something we must foster. What I would like to emphasise is this plan needs to be enmeshed with the various corridors being proposed. We do need excellent Port access for our exports,” he said.
He noted, when they commenced exports to South Africa, they were engaged in “lot of work” to provide infrastructure surrounding Ennore Port.

Continuous Increased in petrol plus availability of Diesel version are the clear hit. TMK has done its job well. This is very well expected.

Cabbies will love anything which comes out of Toyota factory, but i feel Etios for it's quality is overpriced by 50K.

+1. And it is rented on Rs.11/km (agent rate is Rs.9.5-10/km). Compare this with Rs.12-13/km for Innova. For cabbies, it is a winning proposition as rentals are good compared to cost of car. Cabbies just want to make biz, who is bothered about rest ?

Cabbies always get away by charging premium prices for Toyota vehicles, it's very strange but it's true.

Apart from the EMR concept cars on display, there is a host of motorsport based activities for all age groups visiting the dealership. Racing simulators, remote controlled cars on race tracks, children’s automotive learning area, and other relevant contests and activities.

When asked a senior official at the dealership whether EMR editions will be launched, the reply said: Currently Toyota is trying to promote Etios series and may consider launching Etios Motor Racing edition cars in future.

However the limited editions cars will boast only the paint and sticker job with sporty interiors. The cars will not be re-tuned or be fitted with roll cage and sports seats found the Etios Motor Racing editions cars.

The new attempt will help to further boost the image of the Etios series in the Indian market.

EMR Trophy series that is slated to be held in the second half of 2013 will be based on a one-make racing championship platform. The cars will be FIA qualified with racing parts supplied by TRD, and their technical expertise will be utilized throughout the series. Toyota has partnered with Red Rooster Racing for tuning the cars to make them race worthy and come with remapped engine and a roll cage for safety.

Shouldn't Toyota be reducing the prices of Etios brother's as they started manufacturing both Engine and Transmission locally? or they still want to keep milking it's customer's for a fatter bottomline.
