Small SUV and sedan on Toyota's radar.Senior managing officers from Toyota's headquarters in Japan have begun visiting India to understand the local tastes and product requirements
Toyota might be the leader on the global stage in car sales but when it comes to India Japan's Toyota finishes at a distant fifth position.
Though very late, now Toyota studies the Indian market for its new portfolio.
But realising the vulnerability of product gaps in its range Toyota Kirloskar Motors has started work on two new projects aimed at offering customer products that have never been a part of its portfolio before.
The Crossover will compete with Ford's Ecosport and will be positioned under the 10 lakh bracket. The product like Ecosport will be global and be exported to select markets.
The another product is the compact sedan market targeting a piece from the market leader Maruti's Dzire. Toyota is also working on a sub-four meter compact sedan, which may share its platform with the above mentioned CUV.
Product development takes 4-5 years, global inputs are coming in and depending on the market discussions are on with R&D, so it would be a long time to really see the products in the market, not earlier than 2018?
