I said about the general services, there are many other brands centres, where the crew lack the expertise with the newer models technical know-how.

TATA anyways has to sort out the niggles, from production bay itself, especially their benchmark products like Harrier, which is still reported to have niggles.

Some of our auto enthusiastic friends have caught a new variant on test. It seems to be a diesel variant on test. It may also be a turbo petrol variant on test for people wanting some puch. It can also br the CNG variant for some urban markets.

The lack of Deisel variant has certainly pulled TIAGO/TIGOR sales down by 1500-2000 numbers as people always wanted a long run mile muncher. I have seen many Indica/Indigo or Swift/Dezire deisel owner run a lakh kms within 3 years. They will find a hole left unplugged.

Is it the TIAGO Deisel on test?

Tata Motors crosses 40 lakh cumulative production milestone in India

Auto major Tata Motors on Saturday said its passenger vehicle vertical has crossed 40 lakh cumulative production milestone, nearly three decades after it rolled out its first model in the segment -- Tata Sierra SUV in 1991.

The company, which over the years has produced models like the Indica, Sierra, Sumo, Safari and the Nano, had achieved the 10 lakh production mark for passenger vehicles in 2005-06 and 30 lakh milestone in 2015.

"This is a very significant milestone for Tata Motors. Very few players in the industry have reached such a milestone. This has been a long journey since we rolled out Tata Sierra in 1991," Tata Motors President Passenger Vehicles Business Unit (PVBU) Shailesh Chandra told PTI.

Over the years, the company always challenged the conventions and brought in many path breaking products, many times first in the market, like Sierra, Estate, Safari, Indica and the Nano, he added.

With Sierra, the company took its first shot at the SUV segment in the country. The company consolidated it further with Safari.
Further in honour of the legacy of Sumant Moolgaonkar, Tata Motors introduced the first ever multi purpose vehicle in Tata Sumo. With Indica, the company changed the customer perception in terms of how a passenger vehicle is received.

The company set up the PVBU vertical in 1998 and the first product to roll out under its aegis was Indica.

"It was the first indigenously developed car and since then we have always challenged conventions and have strived to bring in technologies which are supportive of the cause of the nation, whether it is safety or things related to sustainability," Chandra noted.

The company has been focussing not only on the safety aspect of its vehicles but has also been leading the electric vehicle space in the country, he said.

"We have brought a paradigm shift to the industry that safety is also important otherwise it was not taken that seriously and to ensure that we were also the first company to commission crash safety testing in the country," Chandra said.

The company's compact SUV Nexon was the first model in the country to receive a 5-star rating from Global Ncap. Tata Motors is also the country's largest electric vehicle manufacturer with 67 per cent market share.

It currently sells Nexon EV and two trims of Tigor, with different range, in the electric vehicle segment. The company also has ambitious plans to launch further electrified models in the future, with an electric version of its premium hatchback Altroz next in the line.

Chandra said with greater acceptance of its current model line up, the company would be able to reach the next 10 lakh production mark in much lesser time.

"It will take us a shorter time to achieve the next one million production mark. This should be on the back of the Indian growth story as well.

"So the industry should also reach higher peaks. It has been growing, barring last year and this year as well due to the pandemic, but the underlined fundamentals of the passenger vehicle industry remain intact whether it is from penetration perspective or buying capacity of people," Chandra said.

From all the angles the growth story should come back as the economy also stabilises post pandemic, he added.

"So on the back of that growth and certain actions that we are taking to strengthen our product portfolio and the traction we are already seeing, I am sure the next one million should be faster then three to four million mark," Chandra said.

The company now sells five BSVI compliant models -- Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Harrier and the Altroz.

Tata Motors has manufacturing facilities at Chikhali, Pune; Sanand in Gujarat; and a joint venture plant with Fiat at Ranjangaon in Pune.

Waiting for the Next-Gen TATA SIERRA 5 & 7 seater vehicles. Hope to see them on Indian roads atleast by 2022. Don't know what is the latest news on the vehicle shown at 2020 Auto Expo. No news on them yet. Currently SELTOS-CRETA pair are running a 'no challenge' territory.
TATA has still a lot on it's plate as they are currently making 2 Sedan versions of the ALTROZ based X45 platform, but they still need to shift the TIAGO, TIGOR and NEXON onto the ALFA platform as they will run obslete soon ending their 6 year life cycle soon. TIAGO and TIGOR are 5 years old and NEXON 4 years. And TATA seems not in a hurry as they are running slow and have noticed a only two vehicles each in design phase, early testing phase and late testing and launch phase that I have been noticing that Companies launch pattern.

Tata Motors charted a success story during the most challenging period (H1FY21) of Indian automotive history with a growth of 2.63%, when the industry as a whole fell 34%.

The ace performers who made the Mumbai-headquartered Tata Motors the third-largest carmaker in April-September 2020 with a market share of 8% rising from 5.3% in the same period last year were Tiago, Altroz and Nexon.

Tata Nexon Production Crosses 1.5 Lakh Units In 3 Years

Tata Motors today rolled out the 1,50,000th Nexon from its Ranjangaon facility in Pune. The company had launched the subcompact SUV in 2017 and since then it has gained immense popularity. The first production milestone came in September 2018 when the company produced 50,000 cars and just a year later the 1 lakh milestone was reached.

The Nexon has been one of the safest cars in the country because it received a 5-Star safety rating from Global NCAP in 2018 and in fact, it was the first car in India to be honoured with this rating. The Nexon has paved the way for other cars from Tata Motors like Altroz, Tiago and Tigor to establish new benchmarks in car safety in each of their respective segments.

I read a recent interview with Shailesh Chandra, President, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, talking about Tata's SUV portfolio. He has been talking about the SUV Portfolio that will soon launch 2 new SUVs, Gravitas in Jan-Feb and HBX or Timero in May-June. He talks about SUVs filling the range but many gaps are in the range. The Blackbird or Sierra, Creta rivalling SUV is the biggest miss. Also an MPV is missing in the portfolio that can give good sales.

But for the moment, TATA seems to be concentrating on Sedan segment with sub 4 meter and 4.5 meter sedans seem to take priority before Blackbird/Sierra as we'll see test mules of Dezire/Amaze rivalling cars once Gravitas is launched and City/Verna once Timero is launched in June 2020. By that time we should get a clarity on Blackbird/Sierra and Ertiga rivalling cars see on near launch variant on display by AutoExpo 2022.

Still need to see what are priorities to TATA Motors for Creta and Ertiga rivalling cars as they sell a huge number.

Colour, materials and finish (CMF) crucial to Tata Motors' turnaround

Nice article in Autocar India about Tata Motors unsung CMF team has played a key role in shaping the fit and finish in new generation TATA cars starting from TIAGO. Looks like the investments in design studios in Italy and the UK in the 2010s, beefing up the CMF team payed off in the process.

Tata cars, SUVs to be delivered in plastic “Safety bubbles”

20201130023511_tata-safety-bubble.jpg

Tata Motors has begun delivering its cars and SUVs in a unique setup called Safety Bubble which, according to the brand, is an added step to shield the car from bacteria and viruses. The company already delivers its cars to customers after a through sanitization process, thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As the name suggests, the Safety Bubble is essentially a plastic bubble with a part transparent wall wrapped around the car. The Safety Bubble has been introduced under the carmaker’s Sanitised by Tata Motors initiative which was launched back in August 2020. The initiative covers deep cleaning and sanitization of the vehicle along with measures to reduce direct physical contact at the time of customers taking delivery of their new cars. The Tata Safety Bubble will be seen at more Tata dealerships in the coming days.

TATA motors and KIA motors seem to have got into a tough war for the third spot with numbers for November 2020 is just in three digits as they are in an all out war. Mahindra too are not much behind at 2k behind both. Seems competition gets interesting. Even TATA numbers were always 30% of Hyundai, but now it has come to some what 45%. TATA motors seems on a roll.

While Tata is doing a commendable job, and it can be seen in the constant 3rd position it has held up atleast for a major part of the year, it seems eventually Kia will be overtaking Tata. One thing Tata is falling behind in terms of competition is the Engine, while manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia have spoilt the consumer with multiple engine and gearbox choice, Tata is still stuck with the not so popular 1.2 revotron 3 cylinder engine. While it has the turbo charged engine under wraps yet if one wants to excell in the mass market segment, you need to offer a decent small 4 cylinder petrol engine(while it realy doesnt matter for Maruti). Tata is still stuck with AMTs for most of their cars, while competition has moved onto CVT, DCT and even Clutchless Manual, in the same segments.

This has always been a problem with Tata, just when it is reaching its peak performance there is that 'one' critical aspect which it leaves behind or compromises (either, engine, design, updates, sales, marketing) , which the competiton excels in and eventually beats Tata. Lets just hope that along with the improvements in Look-Feel-Touch and Designs, Tata also comes up with impactful engine and gearbox options.
