Tata Motors may drop small diesel cars from its portfolio

Auto major Tata Motors may phase out small diesel cars from its portfolio as demand is expected to slow down due to upcoming BS-VI emission norms that would make such vehicles expensive, according to a senior company official.

Already, market leader Maruti SuzukiIndia (MSI) has stated that it would discontinue diesel models from April 1, 2020, when the BS-VI norms kick in, as it expects the increased cost would put most of the diesel cars, especially the smaller ones, out of reach of small car buyers.

Tata Nexon diesel to get BS6 upgrade – Tiago, Tigor diesel might be discontinued

tata-nexon-bs6-diesel.jpg

Tata Motors currently sell the Tiago, Tigor, Bolt and Zest with diesel engines; which are to be phased out as upgrades to BS VI emission norms would not be economically viable.

The decision by the Government of India to leapfrog from BS IV to BS VI emission norms has made many automakers in the country decide to do away with diesel variants from their portfolios. Earlier, Maruti Suzuki had announced their decision to drop diesel variants from 1st April 2020, and now Tata Motors has cited similar plans.

While the company has plans to pull out its smaller diesel engine offerings, the company is also betting big on electric cars. The Tiago and Tigor electric vehicles are all ready for launch. The company is waiting for better infrastructure and govt norms on EVs to get in place before launching the cars for public. Being bullish on EV, all new Tata cars are built on a platform which are compatible with not only petrol or diesel engine, but also with hybrid and electric.

The launch of the Intra LCV is exciting. I hope it meets the new safety standards. The advertising does not talk about it much. I hope a passenger van can be spawned off from the Intra. Sad to see the ace family of trucks being shelved....change

For all the good things that TATA MOTORS seems to be doing in terms of exceptional design and good R&D , somehow it still has not been able to win back the janta's faith in their products. What else explains their lagging numbers with respect to Mahindra and Mahindra. Though the hexa is a much better product, the XUV consistently outsells it by a huge margin. The recently launched xuv 300 has got a tremendous opening, where customers are willing to put their money on a yet to be proven product. Can someone try to explain this phenomenon.

Tata motors have been doing well with their R&D department and coming out with good products like Tiago,Tigor,Nexon,Hexa and now Harrier. What i have seen pan india with lot many people who wanting to think about tata and opting for another brand is their dealership experiences so far. This is one area where i wish tata motors really change the scenario.I have had such experiences in kolkatta, pune, ahmedabad, rajkot, and jabalpur where either friend or relative wanting to atleast have a look at the vehicle and praised as well but the showroom experience puts them back fearing if before purchasing this is the scene what would it be at servicing.I am not telling every dealer is the same but still i believe overall it still needs to upscale this.
Also apart from Tata many other brands also have initial niggles and issues on their vehicles but the mindset of our people for accepting the same for a Tata product is yet not the same as other brands. So these small things still do make significant impact on the sales chart for Tata motors. The brand value for Tata motors for passengers vehicles still needs to improve compared to say maruti or hyundai even if having better products lineup in their range.
Having said that if you compare Tata motors few years before and now yes they have been improving pretty well over the years and hopefully they continue to do in coming years ahead.

The total Automobile industry has been struggling recently. Not just Tata Motors but almost all car manufacturers are performing poorly with low sales. Even two wheelers also suffering same story. May be, people are waiting for launch of BS VI vehicles which slowing the market now?
