An excellent work.

Your attention to detail had motivated me for the rework. This time also everything looks perfect. The exhaust is one spare high in my priority. The LED also looks good.
My scooter has also passed the test but the experience was not nice. I would write it after I get the registration certificate. I am waiting for the RC. There is some play/slight jerking with my front fork. I plan to entrust a garage if I can’t solve it myself.

October 2017: Parked due to starting trouble

Few days after retest, started showing idling issues. Shuts off while running and refuses to start. Parked and covered for the time being. Usual mechanic stopped working on Kinetics.

December 2017 - Curious case of the Kiney

2017-12-26 21-30-23.JPG

Out of curiosity opened up the engine, expecting tons of carbon build up. There was a little on the piston.

2017-12-26 21-28-11.JPG

Head was almost clean. Note the scars made by the lathe guys during previous decarb.

2017-12-26 21-28-58.JPG

Exhaust port was kind of clean with little oily residue.

2017-12-26 21-29-43.JPG

Cylinder had no scratch and was in perfect shape.

2017-12-26 21-29-38.JPG

Cleaned up the carbon on the piston. No abrasives used. Wiped off with petrol. Took some time though.

New engine packing kit. Got from the neighbourhood store, Spark Automobiles. ₹ 30.00. Damn cheap. Came with exhaust gasket, which alone costs ₹ 15.00 normally.

2017-12-27 20-51-04.JPG

And a Veedol grease for application on seals.

Reset everything. Late night work, so couldn't click. Next is carburettor.

There was one Mr.Anil, in Vanchiyoor who serviced Kinetics , don't know whether he is in business now also.
We sold our Kinetic DX in 2016, as there was too many issues cropping in one by one after 19 years of use.[sad]
Century Connections at Ayurveda College still sports a Kinetic service board though hardly sees any Kinetic being repaired there.

February 2018 - Carburettor cleaning

Still has the original Keihin Japan carb. Reluctant to replace it for that matter. So decided to clean them, for the first time. Not sure when it was cleaned the last time or ever cleaned.

2018-02-25 21-28-23 (2).jpg

Disassembled.

2018-02-25 20-39-43.JPG

There was dirt build up throughout.

2018-02-25 20-40-33.JPG

Jets were clogged.

Float and pins.

Autochoke. Bajaj added this as a feature only in the 2000s when Kiney had it since late 1980s.

2018-02-25 20-41-21.JPG

Bowl was full of thick greenish residue.

2018-02-25 20-41-38.JPG

Cleaned with some effort.

2018-02-25 21-00-37.JPG

Main jet #108.

2018-02-25 21-04-14.JPG

And the pair #35.

2018-02-25 21-10-47.JPG

Cleaned and installed.

2018-02-25 21-16-45.JPG

AFR and idle adjustment screws.

2018-02-25 21-01-52.JPG

Assembled back.

2018-02-25 21-23-41.JPG

Outcome was negative. Jet needs replacement. Everything else looked fine. Ran around the whole city for jets. None of them stock them nowadays. Everyone referred to shop/workshop called Autoland, but unfortunately they were closed every time I've been there. After discussion in another forum, got to know Super Splendor had same jets. Searched with Hero dealer and no stock as well and needed chassis number in case I want to order for correct part. Packed up for the time being.

October-November 2018

Swapped the engine. Had the 110 cc engine from the scrapped Zoom.

2018-10-29 10-50-35.jpg

That came with a Spaco PHBC18 carburettor.

2018-11-06 08-51-43.jpg

Cleaned it with 3M Carb Cleaner.

Still no hope. No signs of life with Keihin. Spaco getting stuck at high rpm. Packed up again.

December 2019 - Ray of Hope - New Carburettor

Met the first guy who used to repair Kiney late night at a petty shop over a glass of lime soda. On causal talk, he suggested Auto Land again, and then he said brand-new carb is available at Babu Agencies, one of the surviving old spare shops. Just crashed in there the next day after work and Mamma Mia, it was there. Swiped and grabbed it right away.

Finishing was crude, reminding me of sand casting. This one is listed as Mikuni clone in US e-com sites, but export versions had a bit better finish.

Battery was completely dead despite multiple charging attempts and the kicker got jammed. Again things got postponed.

August - November 2020 - Finally .....

Fast-forward to present. Misplaced the key and got busy with life as a family man, leaving the Kiney in neglect. One day had the gut feeling for that and decided to get it fixed any way. If it's beyond my scope, would convince some mechanic to attend it. By this time, Kinetics have become extremely rare and kinda moving to cult status. Hardly see any nowadays.

Had both Duke and GT battery removed for charging. Found the duplicate key. Connected and cranked. No life. Again put to rest. Still I couldn't sort out what's wrong. Put this image as Whatsapp status and a 2-stroker friend came motivating. He said nothing except fuelling can go wrong in a 2 stroke.

Two months later, Dio had some weird electrical issues (which turned out to be some loose contacts and sorted). Removed battery from it for charging. While going to install back, thought of Kiney. Installed the same battery and tried cranking. It was cranking properly, but not starting. I would spray carb cleaner through the spark plug hole and it starts, but dies when that is burnt. Thought it might be due to low fuel. Drained petrol from Dio and filled up Kiney.

Reverted to stock engine. Didn't clock a single kilometre after the swap. I thought the swap engine was 110 cc, but on closer inspection the cylinder was marked 98 cc. My stock engine had many brand-new parts including drive belt and brakes and a working oil pump. So, it was better.

2020-11-09 13-02-56.jpg

This time, installed the engine all alone. It took less time and effort than during the initial swap where we had 2 of us. Removed exhaust, air filter box/mudguard and suspension, which made it a breeze. Less than 10 min in mating and installing the bolt.

2020-11-09 13-42-45.jpg

Done and cranked and it started up, but not idling. Tried spraying carb cleaner through carb and cranking and it idled as long as I kept spraying. Again, it would start if I block the carb mouth and idle if I open it intermittently. I was going crazy. Tried tuning carb, turn by turn and nothing happened. Then choke came to mind. Removed the choke and signs of hope, cranking and idling, but insanely high rpm. Adjusted the choke to a bit open position and voilà, all sorted out.

2020-11-09 16-23-48.jpg

Started spitting smoke. Idling was normal. [cheers] Oil pump was working perfect. Idled for 30 mins. No issue at all. Starts with single crank or kick. Tried many times after cooling the engine.

2020-11-09 16-24-27.jpg

Now gotta find a matching choke cable and lever. Hornet had the perfect length of less than a foot. Next one was from scooters like Activa, which I have to fit in the front panel as it was over a metre long. In both cases, I have to check the carb end connection part for a match.

My Kinetic didn't have Choke (Sorry Dad's kinetic, as he used to rule with that).
It was 1992 DX.
So did mine and all of the Kinetics. All had auto-chokes from late 80s. Original Keihin carb had built-in one. Later Spaco carb had cable-operated auto-choke. Seen many Spacos and other retrofitted (Boxer/CT100) carbs being fitted with manual choke. I seriously don't want a manual choke, but no other way now.
