Wow!25 years is a long time to stay at the top and still ruling. Yes, We all remember how it actually decimated the competetion namely allwyn Nissan, dcm Toyota etc. It also closed the lid on the movers of the yore like matador 305 and 307, also the standard van. Many people had their doubts on the safety aspect of the vehicle fearing it would topple over at high speeds due to it's high stance, but it had proved otherwise. I think there is another vehicle called the 608, which xover is referring to, it has a longer chassis and is usually used for water tankers in Bangalore. The709 is a bigger vehicle with a flat bonnet like a truck and is used also as school buses here.

407 is known for toppling over. I've seen many myself. It has a high COG, even by mini-truck standards. Its brakes are also a worrying factor.

Neverthless, it is a great vehicle. Our first commercial vehicle.

Hi markiv the 709 with flat bonnet that you are talking about is part of tata EX truck series. The 709 abt which I am talking about has identical cab forward design like 407 , only difference is that it has double tyres in the rear and is slighty longer than 407, but the face is identical, hence the confusion/question!

This is the 709 you are talking about, while i am taling about 709 which looks like 407.

Hi xover, 709 is what you have shown in the pic.
There is no other 709.
There is 608 which looks like a 407.
may be somebody has just sticked a 709 badge on a 608 to confuse Xover.

Spoke to a truck driver just now...[:)] he has confirmed that there is a 608 which looks like the 407 but with a longer chassis and double wheels at the rear. The 709 is exactly the pic what xover has posted. He was scratching his head when I said there is a 709 with a front bonnet design. I sounded confident, then he said " sir, maybe u r right, u know better". Actually I'm no expert in this area[:)] . But , anyways, xover thanks for making me feel proud to be an Indian!

Nope am pretty sure, since in my location there are plethora of 709(not one) which look exactly like 407, and have bonnet design where it reads 709 turbo.I will try to capture some images of the truck as its quite popular in my area and then post it here. Now something really fancies me, is tata really selling 608 as 709 turbo in my area, as i don't think the dealers or customers care too much abt nomenclature of their truck, they are only concerned with profitability, IMO.

Hey autosafari according to TATA official website there are two 709s.One is LPT( flat bonnet), about which you are referring to, but there is also a different kind of 709 named SFC( semi forward cab) abt which i am talking about. It looks identical as 407.Just take a look here:http://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=diff+btw+709+turbo+E+and+709+turbo+S%3F&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCsQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcv.tatamotors.com%2Fshowcase%2Flcv%2F&ei=NMM4T971BMzIrQe2k4XWBQ&usg=AFQjCNGUpaKXCJOEl7jelvO_4tM-a42B_Q

Guys what's the difference between 709 and 407? And are both of these based upon same platform? Whenever I see 709 in my rear view mirror , i always get the impression that 407 is coming?
It's simple buddy. 407 has single tyre at rear i.e. total 2 while 709 has 2 i.e. total 4. And what I have seen of late, 709 are LPT (flat cabin) while 407 is SFC (small bonnet cabin).

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Rudrarup Maitra, Vice President, Product Line, I&LCV, Tata Motors, said, “We are thrilled to launch the all-new CNG variant of the legendary Tata 407. Arguably the most legendary commercial vehicle in India, with a 35+ year legacy, the vehicle has consistently remained a customer-favourite, selling over 1.2 million units to date – the highest ever in this segment.
