ABB Ready To Bring In Fast Chargers For Electric Vehicles To India

With the NITI Aayog proposing to stop the sale of internal combustion engine powered cars in India by 2030, all the attention moves towards electric cars yet again. A host of carmakers, right from Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Hyundai, MG Motor India, Audi, Porsche have already shared plans of bringing electric cars to the country and it will happen in the next couple of years. But while we'd love to see these cars in the country, there's one unanimous cry for better infrastructure, which has been reiterated by Sanjeev Sharma, Managing Director, ABB India. He says, "The government of India has set some ambitious and relevant goals around electrification which is fueling various innovations like moving to electric vehicles. ABB is a company that is involved in either the distribution of electricity or the use of electricity, representing the two sides of our market, and would be delighted to help facilitate this effort in the case of electrification of transportation including motorcycles, cars, buses, trains, planes"

Is India's automotive industry ready for an EV makeover?

70005751.jpg

India will have to figure out its own path. Its EV fleet is small -it sold 7.6 lakh vehicles in FY19, dominated by two-wheelers (16.4%) and three-wheelers (83%), says a PwC report.

Low-cost e-rickshaws, offering cheap last-mile connectivity, is the humble winner in this race. Using leadacid batteries, some 150-odd small-scale EV makers have mushroomed, with an import-assemble-retail strategy in garage-like assembly operations. Multiple factors constrain India’s EV journey. Take cost economics, especially in the crucial passenger car segment. The world’s largest small car market is also price sensitive with 55% of sales coming from the sub-$8,000 segment.

Fast charging facilities required to increase EV market share: Economic Survey 2019

New Delhi:According to a recent Economic Survey, access to fast charging services is required to increase the market share of electric vehicles.

“Currently, the market share of electric cars in India is only 0.06 per cent when compared to 2 per cent in China and 39 per cent in Norway,” the report said.

Another major impediment is that of time taken for completely charging EVs, compared to conventional vehicles. Even fast chargers can take around half an hour to charge an electric car while slow chargers could take even 8 hours. According to the report, it is, therefore, an important policy issue to come up with universal charging standards for the country as a whole to enable increased investment in creation of such infrastructure.
