Jaguar Land Rover has sued Chinese automaker Jiangling Motor for allegedly copying the British firm’s sports-utility-vehicle Range Rover Evoque, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

This is a rare move by a foreign automaker to fight copycats in the world’s biggest autos market.

European Union has refused a design registration request of a Chinese brand which imitated the Vespa Primavera.

Vespa-China-Copy.jpg

The Piaggio Group (PIA.MI) said that a design registered by a Chinese party, used to justify the production of scooters similar to the Vespa exhibited at the EICMA 2019 two-wheeler show in Milan, which were removed by the authorities of the Fiera exhibition centre after a complaint was lodged by Piaggio, had been declared invalid by the invalidity division of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

The EUIPO invalidity division annulled the registration since it was “incapable of eliciting a different general impression with respect to the registered design” of the Vespa Primavera, and pointed out that the registration was an unlawful attempt to reproduce the scooter’s aesthetic elements.

The Vespa Primavera is protected by the design registered by the Piaggio Group in 2013, by the three-dimensional trademark of the Vespa scooter and by the copyright that safeguards the artistic value of the shape of the Vespa, a style icon since 1946.

The invalidity proceedings are part of the wider activities against counterfeiting undertaken by the Piaggio Group for years. This includes continuous monitoring of the databases of internationally registered designs and trademarks, which, as a result of the opposition proceedings initiated by Piaggio, has led to the cancellation of more than 50 trademarks registered by third parties in the last two years.

And there they go again! Doing what they are best at...[frustration]

wey-p01.jpg

Chinese automakers are infamous for cribbing the designs of other makes and models. Even as the Chinese auto industry matures, there are still new models coming out that look awfully similar to those of other automakers. The latest comes from Wey, a brand established by Great Wall Motors in 2017, and it seems like it used the new Ford Bronco as the starting and finishing points.
Codenamed the Wey P01, the rugged-looking SUV only has a handful of teasers available for us to look at, though they do show off quite a bit. Both the Bronco and P01 feature upright front ends with Wey going as far as to flip the Bronco's headlight design treatment as if no one would notice. They even wrap around it the front to the front fender to give it a bit of personality. However, it does feature a unique, though dull, grille design.

Chinese copy cat cars listed – Cheaper versions of Rolls Royce, Land Rover, Mercedes

chinese-copy-cat-cars-list-land-wind.jpg

Some car manufacturers in China blatantly copy paste designs of popular cars and sell them for a cheaper price

One area where Chinese carmakers have been heavily criticized is their fascination with creating near-identical replicas of popular cars. The worrying thing is that many of these vehicles are being produced by some of the largest ‘state-owned’ carmakers in China.

If it was the work of some obscure manufacturer, the entire thing could have been easily ignored and forgotten. Here’s a video posted by YouTube channel ‘carwow’ that exposes some of the worst ever Chinese knockoff cars.

China launches 1958 Corvette replica ... and it's a plug-in hybrid

yqagnbdvf89g0ooqq1xu.jpg

Chinese manufacturer Songsan Motors has launched a suspiciously recognisable new model, called the SS Dolphin.

Unveiled earlier this week at the Beijing Motor Show, the designers of the hard-top convertible have apparently been inspired by the 1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1.

The Chinese copycat car is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid combination and, according to the brand’s website, can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds.

It may lack a V8 but if the performance claim is true, the 1958 Corvette knock-off is quicker than the car that inspired it. The Corvette C1 took around eight seconds to reach the same speed.

io0p7qdlm7uzpqhqolrw.jpg
The wheelbase is significantly shorter than that of the C1, and the nose extends further over the front axle than the Corvette.

It is 4800mm long, 1850mm wide and 1390mm tall – that is 300 mm longer and 94 mm taller than the original.

Proportions at the tail end are not much better, with the rear-wheel arches completely missing the mark.

The official manufacturer specs – translated to English – suggest the car has front and rear disc brakes, ABS, traction control, dual airbags, and stability control.
A fuel consumption figure of 3.0 litres per 100 kilometres is also claimed.

The interior appears to be completely modernised, and photos from the launch show the vehicle with two large infotainment touch screens.

It has an eight-year/150,000 kilometre battery warranty, and a five-year/100,000 kilometre vehicle warranty.

Pricing starts from ¥590,000 (AU$122,019), making it only slightly cheaper than a restored original Corvette.

In 2016, Chinese manufacturer Zotye released a Porsche Macan clone known as the SR8, and, later than year, Jaguar Land Rover sued Jiangling Motor X7 over an Evoque reproduction.

Ford EcoSport Copycat Electric SUV Debuts In China

20210707043928_BYD Yuan Pro EV Front Quarter.jpg

BYD Yuan Pro is a Chinese EV knock-off of the Ford Ecosport

The Chinese automobile market is quite infamous for producing knock-offs of many popular vehicles. Chinese automaker BYD has recently launched the Yuan Pro in its domestic market, which incidentally looks very similar to the Ford Ecosport. The BYD Yuan Pro is an all-electric compact SUV that intends to make EVs more accessible to less affluent customers, even by local standards.

Latest copycat car from China is a Range Rover SUV

chinese-range-rover-fake.jpg

While Land Rover unveiled the all-new fifth-generation Range Rover SUV recently, a knockoff of Range Rover surfaced in China. Known as the Hunkt Canticie, the SUV is on sale in the Chinese market for more than a year now.

Chinese-Range-Rover_4.jpg

While it may not be an exact replica of the original Range Rover, the knockoff bears a lot of similarities. From the front, the Canticie with sleek headlamps that extend to become the grille of the car is very much Range Rover-inspired. From the front three-quarters, the Canticie will give you all the Range Rover vibes because the shape of the hood, wheel arches, windshield, and pillars look much like the Range Rover models.

The owner of this particular model has gone further to shamelessly put Range Rover badges.

Front looks remind me more of the Toyota Land Cruiser though.

Suzuki Jimny’s Chinese copycat from Great Wall Motors

Jimny.jpg

There is nothing new about Chinese automakers copying the designs of famous global models. Many copies of popular designs are produced in China, which seems to care less about international patent law and a knockoff of a popular vehicle in international markets has been revealed.
One of the largest automakers in China, Great Wall Motors, has unveiled a micro-SUV named Tank 100 that appears to be a copy of Suzuki's popular micro-SUV, the Jimny.

Jimny-Tank-100_1-2.jpg

It features an all-black multi-slatted grille, round headlamps with LED DRLs and turn signals integrated into it. Tank 100 also has a muscular utility style bumper at the front like the Suzuki Jimny. This bumper is black in colour and houses two circular fog lamps. Suzuki Jimny only comes in three-door designs, but Tank 100 comes in both three-door and five-door designs.

Jimny-Tank-100_2.jpg

The similarities are even stronger from the side, featuring nearly identical flared wheel arches covered in robust black plastic panelling, as well as black door handles, black wing mirrors, and side window panels with perfect replicas of the Jimny's windows. This micro-SUV also has a black roof that adds a nice touch of contrast. The massive wheel arches are filled with alloy wheels that are the same ones used in Jimny.

As we move towards the back of the Tank 100, we see identical vertical oriented taillights, a roof-mounted stop lamp, and a flat tailgate on which is mounted a spare wheel.

There is no conformation on what type of engine is powering the Tank 100 but is expected to be a four-cylinder turbo-charged petrol unit. It is also expected to have a 4 wheel drive system.

This Chinese scooter is a hilarious copycat version of Vespa ZX 125

Yamasaki-new-gasoline-scooter-50cc-1068x783.jpg

You might mistake this scooter for a Vespa ZX 125, but this model is actually built by a Chinese manufacturer named Yamasaki. Yes, that’s a mix of Yamaha and Kawasaki, two extremely popular Japanese motorcycle brands. As far as we could tell, the scooter doesn’t have an official name; on the manufacturer’s official website, it was referred to as ‘Gasoline scooter 50cc’.
