A joint project with Jaguar Land Rover, TATA to develop a premium sports utility vehicle that could be priced at Rs 20-25 lakh and pitted against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Codenamed Q5, which could lead to rolling out of a fiveseven seater SUV in 2016-17. If the project passes the company's techno-commercial viability parameters, the SUV will be built on the platform of Land Rover's current generation Freelander 2 and based on JLR's premium development processes even as it will be substantially modified to adapt to Indian market conditions.
The SUV is likely to be 50-85 per cent different from the existing Freelander, but it will have the genes of a Land Rover with JLR quality

Rumors have been doing the rounds for a couple of years that Land Rover and parent company Tata are working together on an entry-level, premium SUV. This morning, The Economic Times newspaper shares some interesting details about this SUV, which is due to launch in India sometime in 2016-17.

The newspaper’s sources reveal that the SUV is codenamed project Q5, and that a team of 45 engineers headed by Karl Heinz Servos, Project Director for Joint Projects, Tata Motors, is working on this car. The SUV would likely be a seven seater sporting a 5+2 layout.



The Q5 will use the current generation Freelander 2′s platform, though engineers will substantially modify it for Indian conditions. According to one company official, the SUV will be 50-85 percent different compared to the existing Freelander. The Freelander is based on Ford’s EUCD platform which is also used by the Volvo S80.

Another official told the newspaper that the market study for the SUV was nearing its completion. While the SUV could be badged a Tata, a joint badging option is also under consideration, given that Tata’s flagship product, Aria, has failed to catch the buyer’s fancy. Tata would need a comprehensive makeover if it wishes to use its badge on this expensive SUV.

The utility vehicle would be price positioned against the Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe. A similar arrangement will be followed in China where JLR and Chery will launch a sub-brand that sells cars made from its new manufacturing plant in Changshu, on older or modified platforms.

I would love to see this idea go through. Top end TATA and low end Land Rover overlapping. It would make sense for both TATA and JLR. Volumes for JLR and brand building for TATA.

Ya, that is where is the meeting point of both the companies. Because Tata Motors makes cars at the very bottom line of the price tag and JLR is one such company in the world which makes cars at the top line of the price tag.

I think this idea is superb as Tatas brand will improve in the luxury segment. What Tata has to do quickly launch a few good premium sedans and premium hatchbacks to improve their brand image back. Now is the good time, when Tata starts fully utilizing the ideology and expertise of JLR team and the Italian designers to the full extent.

Then the future would be Tatas.

Anyways, whatever we read or whatever we are told, the top level TML executives like Mr.Yadav told that they would be launching around 20 new models which includes hatchbacks, SUVs, mini SUVs, sedans, C-sedans, sub compact cars, etc by the end of 2020. Tatas have a very large scale plans to capture the markets again. But this time by earning lot of faith by improved quality on their products.

can anyone know about technical details obout freelander2 platform i mean what kind of platform it is ? is it body on frame platform?

No, it was not built on the body-on-frame platform.

It was build on the platform called as monocoque also known as unibody.

A new Tata will be born out of the current Freelander when it is replaced later this year.

The current Land Rover Freelander is set to live on as the basis for a new Tata SUV, when the outgoing SUV is replaced later this year.
When production of the current Freelander ends by the end of 2014 to make way for a new model in the Discovery family, some of its tooling will be shipped to India and its L359 platform used to underpin a new Tata SUV

Tata's Aria is a dud in the Indian market and the " New SUV" at near doulble the price will be an uphill task for TATA's to excite the Indian market.

well there are few things which I feel would work in favour of Tata this time.

With Aria, the shape and price did not match. It was percieved to be an Innova competitor and car from Tata stable was supposed to be economical than Toyota. (general perception )

It was not supposed to be. This coupled with TASS, and issues with vehicle itself spelled doom for Aria. It has not be able to recover from this issue. Its considered as failure in market. My experience however is completely different. Its big, its classy, and it has no issues. My senior who drives it every day is absolutely in its awe. coverd around 4K km in about 3 months of purchase. NOT A SINGLE ISSUE. NO RATTLING, NOTHING.. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

Coming back to the topic.
With Freelander based 25L Suv, Tatas would have around 1-2 years to take care of thier ASS. Its improving and should continue to do so. The launch of Bolt and Zest IMO, should help bring them back the Tata brand to mass acceptance level. Storme and Safari are doing good (cannot say they are blockbusters) but still they are consistently selling close to 1K mark. If they bring upgrades (2dIn and some more whistles and are able to touch 2K mark) it would be good and then Tata would be in a position to bring in the 25L SUV to compete with the likes of fortuner and endeavours of the world.
What Tata should do is that, they should stress more on the JLR DNA in vehicle, remember we indians have slavish tendency to accept foreign goods without blinking an eye. If its foreign, it has to be good. Tata should harp on this point. this is what i feel.

Hmmm. That means re-engineering the freelander chassis to meet TATAs needs. Now thats more interesting a proposition than the first one. TATA is filling the gap. Then may be we'll see bigger and pricier TATA sedans too. To fill the gap that exists between the TATA and Jaguars entry level sedan. Interesting times

There have been multiple news of joint development between TATA and JLR.

The first news was when the next-gen ARIA will be sharing the platform with next-gen defender.

The Second news is a new SUV in the bottom line margin will replace the Safari.

The third news is that they will be developing a monoque chassis SUV with an engine displacing 1.5L - 2.0L in the Freelander range.

If all this translates into butchy SUVs, TATA is back on track!

This is a good initiative. But before they can launch vehicles in this segment with the tata brand name, they need to improve upon their quality and service. If they can do that with bolt/zest, and change the brand perception then they would succeed. Otherwise it will be an uphill task to sell them.

Re-engineering is a tedious task. Take the Freelander. Do some Tata-istic design without touching the chassis and mechanicals. Position it above Storme with 12-15L price tag. Drop the Aria brand.
Yes there is exactly no news of JLR engineers involvement here. But it is a case of platform sharing. Then again current freelander will stop its production. So this platform will be solely used by TML among TML-JLR.
Its better to use this strategy similar to Tata Winger based on Renault Master than taking a platform and start from zero..!!

Actually LandRover will soon phase out freelander2 after phasing out freelander2 TATA will bring the whole tooling kit from UK manufacturing plant to india to produce locally in pune with TATA branded SUV but TATA will do lots modification changes around 50% to 80% in body in white stage
