It seems like Vinayakji has removed most of the obstacles from Tata's path.
Only if the sales figures can also follow suit.[:)]

EDIT: Found one more Manza Ignis review link:http://www.topcar.co.za/first-drives/articles/tata-manza-ignis-review

WHILE HATCHBACKS CONTINUE to dominate the small car market there is still plenty of opportunity for competitive four-doors and Tata has just added to the options with the release of its flagship saloon, the Manza. With its Imperial Group/Accordian Investments backing, Tata is steadily increasing its presence and reputation in this country and is busy with an innovative plan to improve and add to its dealership network, particularly in rural areas.

TATA MOTORS TO ASSEMBLE CARS LIKE THE INDICA, NANO, VISTA, MANZA AND ARIA IN MEXICO

Indian car and utility vehicle giant Tata Motors is all set to launch a slew of locally assembled cars in the Mexican market. Tata Motors is setting up an assembly plant in Mexico, where it will assemble a range of passengers cars to sell in the Latin American market. Cars like the Nano, the Indica, the Vista, the Manza and the Aria will be assembled in Mexico. Tata Motors is said to be investing about $100 Million USD to set up an assembly unit at Mexico, which will be capable of churning out about 50,000 cars every year. Tata Motors could also begin sourcing material from Mexico for building its cars more economically.

The main reason for Tata Motors setting shop in Mexico through an assembly unit is to take advantage of the duty exemption that the Mexican government grants to automakers who invest more than $100 million with a capacity of producing more than 50,000 cars a year in the country. Many developing nations including India across the world levy high import duty on cars that are directly imported into the country. These import duties are designed to dissuade automakers from importing cars and motorcycles, instead seeking to promote investment in the country through local assembly.
Local assembly and manufacturing of automobiles results in big investments being made along with job opportunities being created for locals. This strategy has worked for India, with the country now emerging as an automobile hub of low cost-high quality manufacturing. In many aspects, the Mexican car market is quite similar to India in terms of purchasing power of the buyer and a burgeoning middle class. So, this presents Tata Motors will an opportunity similar to that of the Indian market, which is reflected by the car offerings that Tata has lined up for Mexico, in the form of the Nano, Manza, etc.

Tata Motors could also use Mexico as a production hub and move into other Latin American markets. Quite importantly, the Nano, which is the world’s least priced car, could get access to these markets. Tata Motors has not been able to sell the Nano in sufficient numbers to break even in India. So, the car being exported to various parts of the world will be one part of Tata’s strategy to make the Nano a profitable proposition. The same is the case with its flagship product, the Aria Crossover, whose sales have been underwhelming.

Tata Motors plans foray into US and Latin America with 5 models

Tata Motors is planning to invest 100 million dollars to establish a plant in Mexico that will give them access to US markets.

According to this report, Tata Motors is planning to manufacture 5 models from the Mexican plant. These include the Indica hatchback, the sedan Manza, the Xenon pickup truck, the Aria crossover and the ultra-cheap Nano.
The safety and emission compliance of these models have to be worked upon if Tata has to get the certification to sell its cars. Another factor that one has to count in is the model changes. In the next 3-4 years, both the Indica and the Manza would have neared the end of their lifecycles. The Nano similarly, could be upgraded to meet the emission and safety standards that developed countries have put in place. This could prove less of a challenge in Brazil, but nevertheless engineering changes have to be made to make its cars run on ethanol.

Wading new waters, the Indian automaker needs a suitable partner to carry out this operation. The Indian automaker is speaking with Carlos Slym and Group Autofin for a long term partnership.

The Mexican plant will also give access to the Brazilian markets which the automaker has been eyeing for a very long time. The Tata Xenon was caught testing in Brazil recently and was reported to enter Brazil this year through a private importer. Similarly Mahindra was seen testing the XUV500 and has very similar ambitions.

Redesigned Tata Nano to arrive in U.S. wearing price tag under $10k

Tata's much ballyhooed Nano isn't exactly selling as expected in its home market of India, especially after the well-publicized fires engulfing the several examples of the world's cheapest car. Despite that, the head of Tata Group, Ratan Tata, says his company remains intent on bringing an updated sub-$10,000 Nano to the States, and he intends to do so in three years.

While the Indian market gets a bare-bones Nano powered by a two-cylinder, 37-horsepower engine, Tata unsurprisingly says the US version will have a larger engine, power steering and traction control.

"The Smart and the Fiat 500 have high sticker prices, and people buy them because they are small cars," Tata tells Automotive News. "But everyone knows you put a lot of money into it. We hope that the sub-$10,000 car has appeal."

With the US economy still slowly recovering, a car for under $10k could have plenty of appeal. But the Indian automaker has several obstacles to overcome first, not the least of which is building a dealer network for the Nano. Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover, but that group's CEO, Andy Goss, says there has been no discussion about using those dealers to distribute the Nano.

Perhaps the updated US-bound Nano will be more like the Nano Megapixel concept we saw at the Geneva Motor Show back in March. That car had a longer, 138-inch wheelbase and a larger 325cc engine supplemented by two electric motors. It's safe to assume that if Tata wants to keep costs down so that it can offer the car below $10,000, the next Nano won't get a hybrid powertrain like the Megapixel, but perhaps it will pick up some of the car's size and styling cues.

Tata Motors brings in one-tonne mini-truck for intra-city and last-mile distribution

Tata Motors today launched its 1-tonne diesel mini-truck, the Tata Super ACE, an ideal vehicle for intra-city and last-mile distribution applications, in South Africa. The Tata Super ACE is a combination of new-age design, superior performance, space, comfort, safety and operating economy, delivering exactly what a transportation business requires.

The Tata Super Ace has been designed to easily navigate narrow and busy roads, with its compact dimensions of 4.34 m in length, 1.56 m in width and a turning radius of 5.1 m, with ease. Its strong and sturdy chassis is made from high strength steel for maximum durability. With a full 1 tonne loading capacity, multiple body options and the longest-in-class loading deck of 2.63 m, the vehicle offers best-in-class operating economy. The three way drop-side load body and optimum loading height of 60 cm make the Tata Super ACE a supremely flexible option for various applications.

The cabin is air-conditioned. The interiors have been designed keeping comfort and convenience in mind, with features like laminated windscreen, tinted glasses, power windows, power steering, external power socket and lockable glove box. The newly designed 'soft touch' dashboard in addition to the instrument cluster also has a sophisticated HVAC system which will further enhance the levels of comfort.

The Tata Super ACE is equipped with a 4-cylinder, turbocharged & intercooled (475 IDI) diesel engine that is coupled with a 5-speed fully synchromesh gearbox. Its diesel engine delivers a power of 70 hp (52 kW) and a peak torque of 135 Nm at very low rpms. The gradeability of 39% allows the Tata Super ACE to climb steep slopes and negotiate difficult terrains. Front independent suspension ensures a very comfortable ride.

With a fuel consumption of 14 kmpl or 7.2 L / 100 kms and competitively priced spare parts, the running cost of the Tata Super ACE is one of the lowest in the market.

A 3-year/ 60,000 km complimentary maintenance plan, 3-year/100,000 km warranty and 3-years/ unlimited km roadside assistance make the Tata Super ACE a superior choice for small and medium businesses.

The Tata Super ACE will be available in 2 trims. The price range starts from R 109,995 (incl. VAT) for the lower-end model and R 116,995 (incl. VAT) for the top model.

With the launch of this vehicle, Tata Motors now has a commercial vehicle for every need in South Africa, ranging from the 1tonne mini-truck to 56 tonne gross combination mass prime movers.

The distribution of Tata pick-ups in South Africa started in 2004 through Accordian Investments (Pty) Ltd., a subsidiary of Associated Motors Holdings (AMH), which currently operates through a network of about 60 sales and service dealers. Tata Motors' portfolio in South Africa comprises 20 commercial vehicle models and 3 passenger car models, with over 65,000 Tata vehicles plying on South African roads today.
