"Car without Tacho is like underwear without elastic for a petrolhead" - The D.I.Y. Devil [evil]

Been hunting for ages for a cheap good quality tacho for Hell's Angel, all quotes were north of 3.5k, so the search continued until Maruti launched Ritz/A-Star with Pod tacho. Inquired Maruti about that only to end up mail forwards to Maruti dealer and wash off by Customer Care.

And one fine day our own Varun posted his installs and inspired me to give a try. He had one spare and bought it from him. The entire story starts here. Very much thankful to him [clap]

Final outcome.

I hope this will help all Maruti boys like me badly wanting to install tacho in their beasts. Wiring and all same for Alto/Wagon R (and maybe for 800s). For tacho price and details refer Varun's other thread.

Never get confused with the ECU. Searched for ECU diagram for this specific one, but failed. Wiring detail for Estilo was not availabel anywhere. No SVC, customer care or neighborhood mod shop guy unwilling to lend a hand, reached dead end and never thought of fitting this.

After sleeping with the tacho for exactly a month, lost patience and decided to fight out the ECU. After a search found ECU is similar to Baleno (series), but again let down was every other Maruti had 3 connectors while Estilo got 4 connectors #Fish#.

Then compared all Maruti/Suzuki workshop manuals and found out tacho signal is Brown for all Maruti models. In the end found Speedo console connector was same as Alto's (which I found long back even before started thinking about the tacho [frustration]). Philosophy over, let's start.

The ECU (lies just behind glove box). No need to mess/worry about it. Leave it alone.

The A-Star tacho (from Varun)

Tacho working for the first time, giving hope.

Redlined (not only tacho's first time, also the Angel's)

2012-05-10 13-36-32.jpg

Dismantled.
Sequence (front frame (insert screw driver from below, can deform the frame leaving it ugly)>>glass and other frames>>pluck the needle (careful)>>dial>>remove the leg/base (2 screws)>>remove 2 screws behind dial>>cup and circuit board comes out)

2012-05-10 14-59-13.jpg

Feeble yellow backlit.

2012-05-10 15-06-41.jpg

Custom red test.

2012-05-10 16-00-03.jpg

SMDs stripped out from LED strip, connected directly to tacho positive and negative, eliminating separate backlit connections.

These OEM legs and clips hinders flat fit.

2012-05-10 16-10-10.jpg

Cut and clean.

2012-05-11 12-29-47.jpg

All assembled.

2012-05-10 16-29-13.jpg

Check for the perfect place. Take into account minimal blind spots, no hindrance in cleaning dash, pillars, glass, etc.

The Install

Lift and pull the speedo frame.

2012-05-11 13-01-17.jpg

2012-05-11 13-01-26.jpg

Pull out the dash. Remove connections if any.

2012-05-11 13-02-01.jpg

2012-05-11 13-02-19.jpg

2012-05-11 13-02-37.jpg

2012-05-11 13-03-07.jpg

2012-05-11 13-03-22.jpg

Speedo console got 4 screws in 4 corners. Remove and pull the speedo out.

2012-05-11 13-07-03.jpg

There will be 2 couplers.

2012-05-11 13-09-23.jpg

Grey one is the coupler K and white is couple L.

2012-05-11 13-10-17.jpg

Brown wire is the tacho signal. Don't get confused, there will be many similar looking colors (maroon, orange, and brown with black stripe)

2012-05-11 13-10-35.jpg

2012-05-11 13-11-02.jpg

NC is speedo console, means wire is live, but speedo got no function for that (the turning point for me [:)] ).

2012-05-11 13-11-13.jpg

Check one final time before install. Else all efforts will fo waste and there will be irreversible damage like spliced wires and hole on dash.

2012-05-11 13-19-47.jpg

Poke the dash. Keep the damage minimum.

2012-05-11 13-27-09.jpg

With custom backlit, only 3 connections for me.

2012-05-11 13-31-59.jpg

Connect wire for extending. Secure the joints.

2012-05-11 13-38-31.jpg

Sleeve it.

2012-05-11 13-43-39.jpg

Route the wire through the hole.

2012-05-11 13-44-39.jpg

Splice the tacho signal. (Can be avoided with jugaad ways)

2012-05-11 13-59-50.jpg

Connect and secure. Connect red to ACC and black to body. Done.

2012-05-11 14-00-42.jpg

Fix it.

2012-05-11 14-33-22.jpg

Test it.

2012-05-11 14-33-40.jpg

Done.

Amazing DIY buddy. Can you suggest a tacho that can be used in Etios? And if possible the wiring diagram as to which goes where?

Never mess with Honda/Toyota wiring. They are strict about warranty and adamant when it comes to mods, refuse eevn to fix a hanging wire if you touh something.

Oops, thought it this was A-Star unit and the other was Ritz. Yeah, backlit comes on with key on. If it's from the snap, then the other one is Orange. My harness in speedo side was exactly same as the Alto one shared the previous day.

How to Connect red to ACC? Stripe the red wire(ACC) like as that of the brown from ecu?

Yes strip the wire and connect it, this wire is connected to your ICE, you can tap it there..

One can also connect it to the ignition wire too if they need the tacho work when ign is on..
