Toyota and Suzuki have decided to strengthen their business partnership created in February last year. The Japanese automakers have concluded an agreement that involves sharing some volume models in India. As a part of the new agreement, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will sell a rebadged Maruti Vitara Brezza in our market.

The announcement of a Toyota-badged Maruti Vitara Brezza for India comes as a surprise, as just last month, Toyota Kirloskar India MD Akito Tachibana had said that the company is considering a global SUV for our market, a model that would fall in the INR 10-15 lakh price range.

Toyota has an agreement with Suzuki to borrow not only the Maruti Vitara Brezza but also the Maruti Baleno. The Toyota Etios is a slow seller and the Toyota-badged Maruti Baleno would give the company an edge among the other B-segment hatchbacks. According to reports, it will source 30,000-50,000 units of the Baleno and Vitara Brezza from Suzuki.

The agreement also states that Suzuki will source the Toyota Corolla petrol and Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Maruti Suzuki will hence finally have a successor to the Kizashi. It’s unclear, though, whether it will get the eleventh generation model that is near the end of its lifecycle or the twelfth generation model expected to debut later this year.

According to the same report, Toyota will supply 10,000 units of the Corolla to Suzuki, which will serve as an ideal upgrade to Maruti Ciaz owners.

Re: Maruti Vitara Brezza to be rebadged as a Toyota in India

Is it going to be something like the Terrano (Nissan) & Duster (Renault)? i.e both having similar visual attributes but sold through respective dealerships? If the Brezza is re-badged as a Toyota, it will be interesting to see whether the people opt for the Suzuki's model or the Toyota one. Interesting news though.

Thanks for the information, Toyota does have a Petrol engine, which can be used in this rebadged VB.

But pricing it in 10-15L bracket will be a gamble.

Though this is not going to make much of a difference, I think the main advantage would be that the brands would have more options in the portfolio. As far as the news goes, it has been confirmed that the cars would remain same under the hood and no new engines would be used.
This would help both the brands, as Nexa employee may be able to convince a Ciaz customer to go for a higher segment Corolla. This , along with Maruti's service network would be quite a catch.

Toyota on the other hand would have been losing on the hatchback segment, once they discontinue the Etios and Liva after the Yaris is launched. This way, they can easily get a successful car in their portfolio, which they can sell people who had come for the Etios. Also, with the compact SUV segment catching up so well, it would not be great not having one in their portfolio. More than anything, I think this is just a way to cover more segments with their portfolio, with minimal investments.

Friends,

Toyota to enhance localisation in Brezza, Baleno to make them cost effective.

Japanese auto major Toyota plans to increase local content of Baleno and Vitara Brezza models which it will receive from compatriot Suzuki for selling in India under their partnership to make them price competitive, a senior company official has said.

The likely changes to be brought in the two models "are still under work-in-progress and how the final products gets rolled out will be known over the course of time", Toyota Kirloskar Motor Vice President Atsushi Oki told.

'Toyota Baleno' green-lighted for production by Suzuki & Toyota HQs - Report

According to a report on LiveMint, the Maruti Baleno will be the first cross-badged product as part of the Suzuki-Toyota MoU, which also covers the development of new powertrains and cross utilization of manufacturing facilities. The report quotes its sources as saying that Suzuki's and Toyota's headquarters in Japan have given the go-ahead for the Baleno to be the first badge-engineered product.

Suzuki Motor Company (SMC), which owns the Gujarat plant that makes the Maruti Baleno is likely to supply 20,000-25,000 units of the premium hatchback each year to Toyota, which will sell the vehicle through its dealership network. The report states that both companies have already approved the changes to be made on the vehicle. The Baleno will be redesigned to sport new bumpers, a new grille and possibly new light clusters to bring its look to uniformity with Toyota's design language. However, changes stop there.

There will be no modifications to the powertrain, and it will be interesting to see if Toyota is keen on the diesel variant of the Baleno. The Indian passenger vehicle market, especially the compact segment, has seen growing preference for petrol models owing to the reducing price gap between the fuels and the question marks over the future of diesel engines on compact vehicles beyond the BS6 emission norms in 2020.

The launch of the 'Toyota Baleno' is expected in the first quarter of the next fiscal year (April-June 2019). Suzuki is expected to announce an investment of USD 1 billion in Toyota Kirloskar Motor's (TKM) Bidadi plant to manufacture vehicles, and the report states the Baleno will be made there at some point in the future.

Well why should suzuki invest such a huge amount for doing modificationjob? simply manufacture the same cars in Gujarat plant and put new bumpers, lights, and grille and shipp it to Toyota dealers. Sounding like a novice am I?

From what I understand, Toyota would be manufacturing the Baleno after getting the license from Maruti. It is similar to Maruti manufacturing the 1.3 Multijet diesel engines licensed from Fiat.

The difference would be the Quality control, maybe sheet metal quality, vendors, parts quality would have different standards. We can also expect the Toyota version to have different features for safety and interiors.

Only if the Toyota badged Baleno comes with superior and more powerful engine, more safety and convenience features, then the cross-badging makes sense.
otherwise why would a genuine MS follower go to buy a Baleno from Toyota?
But, a Corolla Altis or Innova would be a hit if sold through the strong network of Maruti Suzuki.
I hope Skoda Octavia and Superb comes under the MS after this trend[lol]

This is moronic move by Toyota, especially since there will only be cosmetic modification in Toyota-Baleno. Baleno is known for poor quality and bare minimum strength. No idea why Toyota is spoiling its legendary quality and reliability image by becoming a sales man of Maruti.

I really hope the changes are not just cosmetic. Toyota has a reputation to keep when it comes to safety. Even their lightest car sold has good crash test ratings, and I don't think they will risk their reputation by not making any changes with the Baleno. The manufacturing is being done by Toyota, and I am sure they will follow their own procedures and checks for the product.
Even though they are using the product license from Maruti, it does not mean that they need to stick to everything in the product design. I am expecting an overall good outcome from this, by getting a different version of Baleno which will have support from Toyota Service.
