Yes, the news is very much true Girish. Mercedes-Benz India is indeed planning to launch the Merc R-Class MPV this festive season (during Diwali I think). It will come only with one engine option, the same 3.5L petrol V6 producing 272bhp which is seen in the E-Class Sedan, Coupe and Cabriolet models. This engine will be mated to a 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. Pricing is expected to be around Rs.60-70 lakhs when it hits our shores. At this seemingly high price for what basically is an MPV that can do a bit of everything, it remains to be seen how well the Indian luxury car buyers take to this all-rounder. Will people buy it at this price over an Audi Q7 or a Porsche Cayenne? Is it really that good? We'll have to wait to see. Mercedes R-Class Diwali launch

Aiming to create a new niche segment in the luxury bracket, Mercedes-Benz India will launch the R-class for approximately Rs 60 lakh ex-showroom this November to coincide with the festive season. In fact, dealers have already started taking bookings for the latest Merc.

Thanks to styling cues borrowed from the company’s saloon and SUV models, the ambiguously shaped R-class MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) does not crouch into the rather dreary minivan territory like the earlier model but makes its own luxury MPV segment with no other car to share space with.

Launched internationally in 2006, the car coming to India will be the updated version that will go on sale this September in the UK. Modifications to the R-class’s styling include a new front grille, headlights, bonnet and wings.

The R-class will come in only one variant to begin with – the Long Wheel Base R350 4MATIC which has a 3498cc V6 petrol engine. The fully loaded car will come with bi-xenon headlamps, steel spring suspension in front and AIRmatic (Adaptive Intelligent Ride control) system featuring self-leveling air suspension in the rear to aid comfort and improve driving dynamics.

The all-wheel-drive automatic develops 272bhp at 6000rpm and 35.7kgm of torque at 2400rpm. Performance figures are impressive for a car this size – zero to 100kph in 8.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 230kph.

Mercedes will not get the diesel engine to India which is a pity. The R350 CDI is not the same engine as the one in the E350 CDI; it gets a new engine management package that makes it more powerful and fuel efficient but has not been passed due to inferior fuel quality in India.

The interiors is where the R-class scores; the highly flexible interiors can seat up to seven in various seating combinations. The third row is the most impressive – even better than the GL. The seats can be folded down to create a massive 2,385 litres of storage area. Leather interiors are available in two tones of contrasting shades, a leather-covered tilt and telescopic steering wheel, dual zone automatic climate control and a choice of high gloss wood trims. The R-class features a command system with an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer and a long list of entertainment options such as eight-inch screens for the rear passengers, a DVD player and wireless headphones. There is no compromise on luxury, and rightly so for a car that will cost Rs 60 lakh.

The new R-class gets Mercedes’ latest generation 7G-Tronic automatic transmission that has a Direct Select lever on the steering column and shift paddles placed on the steering wheel. The new torque converter reduces transmission input when the car is at rest thus reducing fuel consumption.

In the Indian market, the R-class will not face any competition in its segment since it will be the only car, but it will cross paths with the Audi Q7 and the base Porsche Cayenne in terms of pricing. The lack of a diesel engine option could hurt sales. What works for the R-class are space, practicality and comfort of an MPV coupled with refinement and driving dynamics of a saloon car.

Mercedes is in full throttle from a while now with the set of exciting launches. R-Class is one of the most beautiful and sophisticated looking MPV I have ever seen. Though it’s doubtful whether R would anyway impact sales of SUVs in the similar price range. Perhaps to a marginal extent as it is one of a kind model in India, creating a different niche altogether.

Like the luxurious and spacious SUVs, the new R-Class treats its occupants to a travelling environment characterised by generous accommodation and highest comfort while ensuring maximum occupant safety. Simply stunning: the design of the R-Class
The new generation R-Class celebrated its world premiere on 31 March 2010 at the New York International Auto Show. India which has emerged strongly in the arena of world-class luxury automobiles is one of the first markets to witness the introduction of this automobile marvel. The R-Class features a new, self-assured appearance, highlighting the unique personality of this versatile vehicle. The overall impression is determined by integrity of design that encapsulates the unique personality of this highly versatile vehicle. The New R-Class seamlessly blends function and style with multi-element headlamps, standard front fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips and LED tail lamps.

Engine Specification:
Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, the R350 4MATIC is capable of generating 272 BHP of max power at 6000 RPM and a maximum torque of 350 N/m at 2400 to 5000 RPM making it one of the most powerful engines in its class. With this extra output and performance (top speed 230 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 8.4 seconds), the R 350 4MATIC demonstrates the high efficiency of the 4MATIC all wheel drive system. Also, to make sure one enjoys all this power as effortlessly as possible, the R 350 4MATIC is equipped as standard with the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

A relaxed environment for both longer journeys and everyday use
Thoughtful accommodations and rich appointments define the R-Class experience. With three luxuriously spacious rows of seating, generous legroom and headroom, rich materials, power windows that include flip-open 3rd-row quarter windows, and numerous armrests and storage areas let every passenger enjoy the ride.

The classic interior – which seems even more spacious with the electric sunroof – makes use of new materials and colour combinations to enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this unique luxury tourer. Also, another benefit in the car is in the form of its large, versatile luggage compartment.

Further, the R-class also features an Audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer and a long list of entertainment options such as eight-inch screens for the rear passengers, a DVD player and wireless speakers. Leather interiors, a leather-covered tilt and telescopic steering wheel, three zone automatic climate controls and a choice of high gloss wood trims are also available.

Safety: PRE-SAFE
Mercedes-Benz originated this revolutionary safety system, and it’s still the only manufacturer to offer it standard. A predictive occupant-protection system, PRE-SAFE® acts decisively to prepare for a possible accident, using sensors from two of the active safety systems in the vehicle: Brake Assist and our Electronic Stability Program. If system sensors detect certain vehicle movements that indicate that an accident is possible, PRE-SAFE takes action to help protect the vehicle’s occupants. Reversible electronic tensioners tighten the front seat belts. On vehicles equipped with front-seat memory, PRE-SAFE adjusts the occupied front passenger’s seat to a more favourable position for air-bag and seat-belt effectiveness, as well as both active front head restraints for optimum positioning. In the event of severe skidding, which indicates that a rollover is likely, PRE-SAFE closes the sunroof and side windows.

I like the pre-safe feature that closes the sun-roof and all the windows in the event of detection of a roll-over!

The FE is very less compared to E350CDI, especially when the engines are same.
