Ford is getting ready to evolve its best-selling F-150 pickup truck for the 2021 model year. It could have a slightly smaller V-8 engine, a plug-in-hybrid powertrain, and a new platform that will support the first ever electric powertrain in a Ford truck, ready for future competition from the newly announced GMC Hummer EV and other recently announced electric trucks.

From these spy photos, we can see that the F-150's overall design won't be altered too dramatically. The bulk of the differences are in the truck's design cues, specifically the grille, headlight surrounds, and taillights—the only things fully visible in these photos. Expect the new F-150 to make its official debut in the near future. We say this because Ted Cannis, Ford's global director for electrification, told Automotive News Canada that the electric F-150 will be next after the Mustang Mach-E, which was revealed late last year.

2021 Ford F-150 to launch in July, electric version due 2022

zwbnivkcf8dw93o8l5ji.jpg

The fully-electric Ford F-150 is still coming to North American showrooms, it just won't be until 2022.

That's according to Ford COO Jim Farley, revealing details about the F-Series launch in an interview with American broadcaster CNBC.

Farley announced the 2021 Ford F-150 will be launched on July 25 (though some sources have the date as June 25) with production to begin later this year, but he said the company didn't expect to have the fully-electric variant of the Ford pickup on the market until mid-2022.

The electric F-150 is expected to follow a range of turbocharged petrol, diesel, and hybrid V6 engines. For now, the iconic Ford pick-up is not planned for Australia and remains primarily a North American model.

With Ford selling an F-Series pickup every 30 seconds by some estimates, moving to an electric powertrain marks a historical step in the model's 72-year history.

2021 Ford F-150 Pickup Truck Teased Ahead Of Launch In The US

Ford Motor is all set to launch the much-awaited F-150 pickup truck on June 25, 2020 in the US. Ahead of its launch, the company has officially revealed the first glimpse of the upcoming 2021 F-150 pickup truck. The teaser image of the redesigned truck does not reveal much, as it provides a glimpse at the silhouette, focusing more on the redesigned headlight cluster. It also hints at the headlights featuring C-shaped LED DRLs that continues further down incorporating into the front bumper. The picture shows a new design signature of the pickup trucks that are quite popular in the US.

The image shared by Ford manages to keep the rest of the design in the dark. Notably, the shape of the 2021 Ford F-150 truck looks bigger than the current version. The new pickup model is likely to sport a bigger grille that is seen in the previous generation models. Apart from the bulging hood with an attractive bodywork, the truck will get new taillights and a revised tailgate.

On the inside, the cabin of the F-150 truck will feature a digital instrument cluster and a larger infotainment system. However, there is no official confirmation from the carmaker yet. The company previously mentioned that it is likely to offer SYNC 4 infotainment system on the F-150. Moreover, we could also see a new steering wheel, new switchgear with climate controls and digital displays.

2021 Ford F-150: world’s biggest selling pick-up gets major overhaul

The 2021 Ford F-150 will be able to be driven hands-free in certain conditions while a hidden camera makes sure the driver is paying attention, as one of the world’s biggest selling vehicles takes a step towards autonomous driving.

It will also make a step towards zero emissions driving, with a hybrid version of this model arriving about two years ahead of a full electric model, the company said.

These are just some of the headline acts for the first major update to this generation of North America’s biggest selling pick-up.

Ford says the new F-150 has been loaded with technology that improves safety, practicality and drive-ability, and even has a trailer reversing mode to save embarrassment – and time – at boat ramps and caravan parks.

Workhorse models have the option of plugging more equipment into power sockets in the pick-up bed, top end models have front seats that recline to a fully flat 180 degrees – business-class style – so occupants can take a break on long haul drives.

The automatic gear level can be stowed and the console folds over to create a flat workspace to operate a laptop when stopped.

However, the next generation Ford Ranger ute – due in late 2021 or early 2022 – may get some of the cabin technology, including Ford’s latest infotainment system, as well as a digital instrument display.
