Volkswagen working on lower-cost MQB platform

Targeted at emerging markets; Light but expensive high-tensile steel could be deleted to keep costs down.
While costs have been reduced due to the MQB programme, they are still not low enough to help VW achieve high levels of penetration in emerging markets like India. This is the reason why VW is blending some of its standardised MQB modules with others that will be specially developed at a lower cost. The objective is to put together a lower-cost sub-platform that will be used in developing markets around the world, offering the benefits of both low- and high-cost technology.
VW’s lower-cost MQB toolset couldn’t come a day too soon. And a Taigun-like compact SUV based on it could come to India first. Exciting times ahead.

Volkswagen Group Malaysia's chief has recently stated in an event that going forward, Volkswagen cars in Asia will wear a torque-based engine labeling. Example:

> Polo 1.5 TDi will be Polo 230 TDi

> Polo 1.2 MPi will be Polo 110 MPi

Though no specific deadline has been defined and there's no update from the Indian division of the German giant so far (Source: link).

Buddies,

VW is planning to introduce Utility vehicles in India. Here's what Michael Mayer, brand director for Volkswagen in India, said

There are two or three segments which are very interesting, and the SUV/MPV segment is one of the most interesting, Mayer said. The company currently doesn't sell any SUV or MPV in India.

"We are focusing on the segments which we haven't cleared so far and this is an intensive programme that we are running through this year to make these decisions," Mayer said. "I am giving that input to the board, two-three times a year. Board is very receptive to that, as the decision has to be made."

Volkswagen reiterates its commitment towards India and manufacturing in India by showcasing made in India cars and Dual Mechatronics Apprenticeship Programme at its pavilion during the ‘Make In India Week’ 2016.

Volkswagen has a long term commitment to India. With a total investment of approximately €795 million, Volkswagen India has set up a full manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. The German company has invested heavily in developing suppliers in India and localising parts and components. These efforts have also been extended into the Engine Assembly Plant where 1.5-litre TDI engines are being assembled.

Emphasising on the commitment towards India, Volkswagen recently unveiled the all-new Ameo – a car specifically made for India and made in India. Volkswagen Ameo has been designed keeping in mind the compact sedan segment in India and the needs of an Indian customer. This car, which will be manufactured at the Pune Plant, will take centre stage at the Volkswagen pavilion during the ‘Make In India Week’.

Alongside the Ameo will be the Vento in a left-hand drive configuration. Manufactured at the Pune Plant, this Vento will be exported to Mexico and is the highest selling Volkswagen there. Volkswagen produces Polo and Vento at its Pune Plant for domestic market as well as for over 35 export markets across four continents of Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

Volkswagen India will also showcase its efforts undertaken through the Volkswagen Academy at the Pune Plant towards skill development. With the Dual Mechatronics Apprenticeship Programme, Volkswagen is graduating young and talented workforce which is ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow’s modern manufacturing industry.

Dr. Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, commented “Volkswagen has a long term commitment towards India. We have established ourselves in the country with a full-fledged state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and are catering to domestic as well as export markets from here. India offers a great potential in terms of manufacturing capabilities and this is why we support ‘Make In India’. This initiative will help in making India one of the largest automotive markets in the world.”

Volkswagen's Mega India plans - 2020

Exploring several ideas in cracking the Indian Auto segment, a market which is predicted to becoming the 3rd largest soon, VW now redraws its map for India.

1. Will bring out cars of the MQB Platform but a cost reduced one ( same MQB) architecture ( 'ECO' car platform)

2. SKODA will lead the 'ECO' CAR Project and the platform will be used by both VW and Skoda.

3. New generation of Polo, Vento and Ameo, a premium hatchback for Skoda Auto and a crossover/SUV for the domestic market - 2020 project.

4.An investment of Rs 1,500-Rs 2,000 crore is expected to be made on this architecture

5. This platform will also be shared in other markets like S America Middle East and other emerging markets thus giving opportunity for exports as well.

6. Skoda Auto, which is largely a European centric brand with an annual profit of over $1 billion, has a huge opportunity to develop the emerging markets.

Disappointing performance of VW India !

It's a pity Volkswagen hasn't been able to grow in India: Matthias Müller, Global CEO, VW Group
When the Volkswagen (VW) Group entered India about a decade back, it had a lot of expectation but lost its way due to intense competition. It is a pity that VW has not been able to grow in the Indian market, said Matthias Müller, global CEO of the group.

In an exclusive interview to ET on the sidelines of the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, Müller said he is hopeful that with the new plan in place, and with Skoda taking the lead responsibility, the group will be the group will be in a better position in the Indian market.

Re: Disappointing performance of VW India !

Start Using local manufactured parts , bring down the service and parts cost and availability time.
don't think there is any other way to start attracting buyers and seriously don't know what's stopping them to do so.
i have mentioned the same thing in many similar threads. ford did the same but it will need some time to spread but they did a positive thing.

PS : they lost a customer ( myself ) who bought an elantra even though the octavia was the first preference. didn't buy it because of unreliability and expensive parts.

Re: Disappointing performance of VW India !

High cost of ownership, miserable ASS, unreliable cars.
Only thing good about VW cars is the build quality and driving dynamics(debatable) .

Re: Disappointing performance of VW India !

Frankly none of their offerings really wowed me much especially given the price and the competition
After sales, reliability and not offering certain basic features made me look away from VW
Dieselgate scam doesnt help especially since they lowered car performance for exisiting user base as a fix making it an effective fraud

The cabin, seats were also very disappointing in all their cars except the Tiguan , Passat and Jetta

Re: Disappointing performance of VW India !

Their product life cycle is way too long. they are still selling the old polo, vento. I wonder why they are not bringing the next gen versions of these cars.
The other negative is that, off late they have been introducing way too many minor updates. I read somewhere (not sure if its true) that tiguan will get an updated ICE. Just imagine how the existing buyers will feel after paying 35 lacs. its not even three months.
