If you’re a sportsman in India, you should either play cricket, or be born to a billionaire. All other sportsmen in this country are destined to suffer sheer neglect from the government and the media alike. Even more so if you’re into motorsports, which is sometimes not even considered a ‘sport’ but tagged as an ‘entertainment’ activity in our country. Here’s another story of a sportsman suffering neglect and braving all odds to keep his racing dream alive. If you’re a true motorsport enthusiast, this story would have you aghast with disbelief.

Sarath Kumar, the young racing prodigy who has amazed one and all with his impressive pace in national and international racing events, and holds the proud distinction of being the first ever Indian to have raced in MotoGP, is currently having to drive a taxi to make ends meet. The young racer, apart from being the first Indian MotoGP rider, has also made India proud by bagging the third position at the CIV – Italian Championship in Monza - making him the first Indian to have secured a place on the podium at an international motorsports event in Europe.

According to a report in TOI, the young racer has to play a cabbie for 10 hours to sustain his family. The 20 year old wakes up at 5 in the morning everyday for three hours of physical training with his personal trainer. Don’t be mistaken by the mention of a personal trainer though, for he has to pay Rs 6000 for the professional’s services from his own pocket. An hour after the training session he takes to the wheel of loaned Toyota Etios which he drives for 10 hours every day to earn his bread in Chennai.

Sarath has been playing a cabbie for the past two months now. He used to earn more when he started his day early, working in a 4:00 am to 7:00 pm shift, but having to start later in the day due to his fitness regime has reduced his earnings which are now about Rs 10 – 12 K per month. Out of this, Sarath has to pay his trainer, buy health supplements, pay house rent and take care of his sister’s education too. It’s really an irony that the only significant help that Sarath receives comes not from his own country of more than a billion people, but from Italy. A friend from Italy helps him with some of the health supplements and training techniques.

We really wonder why Mahindra Racing, whom Sarath represents can’t sponsor these expenses. We’ll soon get in touch with the young racer to get a better picture on the state of affairs. Sarath, in the meantime is looking for a full time sponsor, so that he could focus all his concentration and energies into racing. Sarath's next race will be in Mugello on June 23.

Let’s do whatever little we can to help Sarath. If not with money, please share this appeal on your Facebook page, or any other social media platforms to help spread the word.

Here’s a brief list of Sarath’s accomplishments

• First Indian to Participate in MotoGP 125CC World Championships
• 2010 National Champion of India in 165CC Expert class
• Lap record holder at MMRT - Chennai (1.56.629)
• 2nd fastest lap time at the Sugo International Circuit, Japan
• 2nd overall in the 4-stroke 165cc class in the MRF International Challenge 2010
• 1st overall in the Yamaha 135cc one-make under-bone class at the MRF International Challenge 2010
• Winner of the 2010 King of the Hill in the 165CC category at Bangalore
• Winner of the MECO 90 Minutes Endurance Race 2010
• 2008 National Champion in 130cc 4-stroke novice class
• Third position at the CIV – Italian Championship in Monza.

This indeed is a very shocking news, Pansingh Tomar of modern times, he even races for Mahindra GP team cant they take care of his financial needs, they go on gifting Dhoni and Gambhir customised vehicles for free, and an upcoming sports star is left unattended even though he represents them.

It's a real shame.

Sarath Kumar takes a break from professional racing. Does any Indian care?

Premature end to Sarath Kumar's stint with Mahindra Racing.Indian rider Sarath Kumar stint with the Mahindra Racing team in the CIV-Italian Championship has come to a premature end. Sarath, on Friday, announced his decision to take a break from professional racing due to personal reason.

The 20-year-old rider from Koyembedu was struggling to make his ends meet, resorting to driving a taxi in Chennai to help his struggling family. Mahindra Racing said they have relieved Sarath from his contractual obligations since he would not participate in the remainder of the 2012 season of the Italian Championship. "This has been a very tough decision for me. Racing is my passion but I have to fulfil certain personal commitments in Chennai. I have therefore decided to take a break from the Italian Championship and focus on my family," Sarath said on Friday.Sarath's best performance for Mahindra Racing in the 125 cc event came at Monza with a third-place finish. "It was a great learning curve being a part of the Mahindra Racing team for the Italian Championships," he added.

It’s probably fashionable to talk about Rossi/Lorenzo/Moto GP and how WSBK is coming to India, how Honda/TVS/Yamaha is supporting domestic racing in India, how Hero Moto and Mahindra Racing is taking India’s name in the international racing circuit.. but when it comes to someone as humble like Sarath Kumar and what it seems like giving up on racing (God forbid), nobody seems to care. Come on, how much would it take to take care of Sarath’s finances? Rs. 30-40K per month? That would be like a single 10 second Ad spot on Prime time TV..!!

Untill the useless sport 'cricket' is banned in India, none other sports will receive attention or even get noticed! How many of us knew that Kom was a World Boxing Champion before she won a Olympics medal?

Remember a joke: USA: if anyone attacks us, we will attack them. IRAN: if anyone attacks us, we will nuke them. Here come India: If anyone attacks us, we will stop playing cricket with them !!!!

So called sports bodies and sports ministry, please wake up!

This is just a shame to India, where people don't consider any sports other than cricket as sports. Shame that parents can't allow their child to pursue his/her passion in sports other than cricket as they know there will be no future in this cricket dominated nation. Yuvraj gets cancer and media is like gaga over his illness and people are dieing daily because of cancer and no one is there to even look after them. Shame India. Sometimes really I just dont feel like living in India anymore. This place is becoming worst day by day to live for normal people.

This is India after all. It's always the cricketers who gain loads in terms of money. Almost all the other sports persons are ignored. I have no idea when India will wake up. Even the recently concluded Olympics was a testimony to India's pathetic performance in sports other than cricket. Stuff like this just makes me hang my head in shame when my friends born and brought up in other countries point that out to me when I try and tell them what a great country India is.

Sarath Kumar, Sumit Lucas Toppo stamp their class at Round 3 of the MMSC-SIDVIN FMSCI National Motorcycle Racing Championship

Sarath Kumar continued his brilliant form on his return to the MMSC - Sidvin FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship with another dominant win in the Honda CBR 250R Open category. After a layoff of nearly a year, Sarath proved that he hadn’t lost any of his magic as he blitzed the field to take another win. Sumit Lucas Toppo, Arun Muthukrishnan and K. Jagan too, proved that they were in a class of their own as they doubled their wins over the weekend here at the Madras Motor Race Track in Sriperumbudur.

An action packed day of racing with 16 races in total started with the Group D 130cc Novice category where Sparks Racing’s Kamlesh Thakur from Jalgaon took the win ahead of Chennai riders, Ramesh Kumar (MotoRev India) and K.Y Ahamed (TVS Racing). The second Group D 130cc Novice race saw a change in the top two with Ramesh Kumar this time narrowly beating Kamlesh Thakur to the finish line 5 seconds ahead of K.Y Ahamed. The Group D 165cc Novice class witnessed the notable Arun Muthukrishnan win both races with P. Sandesh and Ramesh Kumar finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in Race 1. Not much changed for Arun in Race 2 as he took yet another win as the Chennai rider crossed the finish line 4 seconds clear of Ramesh Kumar with P. Sandesh finishing in third position this time around.

The Group B 165cc Open category also had its two races held today K. Jagan of TVS Racing rode a faultless race to take the win ahead of R. Deepak and Harry Sylvester completing an all Chennai podium. Race 2 of the category saw much of the same with K. Jagan in control once again as he won his second race of the day ahead of Harry Sylvester who made it a 1-2 for TVS Racing with Shyam Shankar completing the podium for MotoRev India.

The Honda One Make Championship with its Stunner Open category provided some close racing with 17 riders in the mix but in was a Chennai 1-2-3 again with S. Padmanabhan emerging ahead of the pack to take the flag ahead of Prativ .S and Allwyn Jebaz. The Honda CBR 150R witnessed a tight battle between the leaders with N. Abhishek of Chennai crossing the chequered flag ahead of Ranchi’s Sumit Lucas Toppo and Chennai’s Aravind Ganesh, all split by less than a second at the finish line. The Honda CBR 250R told a different story with the favourite and yesterday’s winner, Sarath Kumar of MP TEN10 Racing once again clinching top spot ahead of the MotoRev India Team duo of A. Prabhu and D. Dinesh Kumar.

The TVS One Make Championship saw 15 riders battle it out for top honours but in the end, in the Apache RTR 180 Novice category, Prashanth Kumar from Andhra Pradesh took the win ahead of the impressive Arun Muthukrishnan from Chennai and Rahul Rathod from Yavathmal. The Apache RTR 180 Open category saw a similar result to yesterday’s race with P. Ananth Raj taking his second win in as many days ahead of Rajesh Kumar with S. Padmanabhan coming home in third place after 10 laps.

The Yamaha One Make Championship saw some impressive racing yesterday and that trend continued today with the riders fighting for position right down the order. Race 1 of the YZF R15 Open category saw the top three split by less than a second with Dinesh Kumar emerging on top ahead of Vivek Pillai and Shyam Shankar. There was a close battle on display once again in the second race of the class as Shyam Shankar this time took the win ahead of Dinesh Kumar and M. Sudhakar after 10 hard fought laps. The YZF R15 Novice category meanwhile saw P. Sandesh from Bangalore, who also impressed in Group D, take the win ahead of Maharashtra’s Rahul Rathod and Prashanth Kumar from Andhra Pradesh.

The big boys of the MMSC - Sidvin FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship, the Group A 600cc Superbikes, threw up a surprise as championship leader and favourite, K. Rajini crashed out of the lead early in the race, leaving R. Deepak of Preethi Racing and M. Gautham of MotoRev India battling for the win. Deepak held of the charge from Gautham as Harry Sylvester completed the podium making it a good day out for Team Preethi Racing.

The MMSC - SIDVIN FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship returns to the MMRT in Chennai in three weeks time after this scintillating weekend of motorsport which witnessed a total of 23 races and close to 250 riders competing for top honours.

Sarath Kumar to race in the 2013 Spanish Moto3 championship

India’s first MotoGP rider Sarath Kumar will be competing in the 2013 Spanish Moto3 with reigning champions Monlau Competicion. Sarath is being back by SK-Sarath69 Sports Ltd. He made his MotoGP 125cc class debut in 2011 and went on to win a podium at the 2012 Italian championship at Monza.

For the 2013 season, he will be seen riding the Suter-Honda Moto3, a 250cc 4-stroke prototype race bike developed for the Spanish Moto3 world championship. This championship has nurtured many champions like reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo and also upcoming star Marc Marquez. Sarath can use this opportunity to realise his dreams of being on the MotoGP grid once again.

After the announcement, Sarath commented, " It is a dream come true to race in the Spanish Moto 3 championship, considering the great riders who have participated in the same. Monlau Competicion is a winning team and I hope I can help them continue their winning ways. The more experience I get the more confident I feel and the faster I go. This is a huge opportunity for me so I hope I can make my country proud."

From having to drive a fleet cab to make ends meet to be able to get a chance to ride again in a competitive international racing event is a dream come true for the Chennai lad. Let’s hope Sarath helps the Indian tricolour fly high on Spanish soil.

@Visran,

I have a small question here, may be it just looks like stupidity, but do you really think this is a real big problem who is unable to make a career, there are lot big problems in the country in which we live and people strive to get their simple food for the day including children. In front of them I really do not see this as a very big problem man as we aspire to do something always in life and end up doing some thing else, its not a big deal as we get an opportunity to live, but just think about those poor souls who doesn't even get an opportunity to get filled their bowel with 3 times food in a day[:)] please do not take it any kind of offence friend

Yes, I agree with you as an Auto enthusiast too as our governments thinking pattern and the sport lovers thinking pattern needs a great shift towards other sports like tennis, badminton, base ball, athletics, motorsport. Then only poor people like sarath will get support and also I blame the corporate business houses for this as they have a very good capability to sponser such people, but in India it is always cricket cricket cricket every where[:)]

Sorry, I just wrote that post, as part of our charity and seva programs we visit lot of slums and orphanages, so felt that
