New Porsche 911 Turbo S spied with minimal disguise

The images reveal a very nearly undisguised test car sporting the familiar 911 Turbo rear wheelarch intakes and wing as well as the square quad exhausts in place of the twin oval items that would usually denote a standard Turbo. Helpfully, there’s also an interior dashboard shot showing a similar digital layout to that of the 911 Carrera we’ve already driven but with the telltale ‘Turbo S’ legend in the centre of the central analogue rev counter.

There’s nothing official on the new Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S powertrain but the expectation is that drive will be sent to all four wheels from a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six. The standard Turbo is rumoured to come close to the 600bhp mark this time, a significant upgrade on the 552bhp of the previous-generation 991 911 Turbo. That could see the Turbo S variant extend as high as 620bhp or more. Both models would use the Porsche PDK 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

Porsche has been open with its plans to electrify the 911 range with hybridisation. The first 911 hybrid is still a couple of years off, but this upcoming Turbo could well be the last to not use an electric motor.

Porsche 911 Belgian Legend Edition revealed

The Porsche 911 Belgian Legend Edition has been revealed; a model designed to celebrate the 75th birthday of ex-Formula 1 and Sports Car racer Jacky Ickx, and the first special edition variant of the latest 992-generation 911.

Inspiration for the new model has been taken from the crash helmet design of the six-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner (with four of his victories achieved with Porsche). Each of the Carrera 4S models on which the 911 Belgian Legend Edition is based, are painted in a dark blue finish sampled from the Belgian’s crash helmet.

The cabin itself is trimmed in black leather highlighted by hand-finished grey cross-stitching. A ‘Belgian Legend Edition’ motif is illuminated in the door sill trims, while 18-way sports seats with 911 lettering on the headrests complete the interior design.

Undisguised 2020 Porsche 911 Turbo S caught on camera

The brand’s latest flagship sports car will make its debut next month at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, before going on sale later this year. These images reveal the styling of the new Porsche 911 Turbo S in its entirety – both inside and out. This mule sports Porsche’s trademark flared wheel arches and side intakes, which have featured on the 911 Turbo since its introduction in 1975. There’s a new rear diffuser, too, along with an enormous ducktail spoiler mounted atop the engine cover.

This latest batch of spy shots also provides our most detailed look yet at the 911 Turbo S’s interior. It shares the same dashboard and centre-console layout as the standard-issue 911 Carrera, but features an Alcantara steering wheel, unique graphics for the infotainment system and a new analogue rev-counter, branded with Porsche’s “Turbo S” badging.

Porsche hasn’t yet confirmed the specifications of the 911 Turbo and Turbo S’s powertrain, but both should feature a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat-six, four-wheel-drive and an eight- speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.

Porsche’s entry-level 911 Turbo is rumoured to produce close to 600bhp, while the more potent Turbo S could offer upwards of 620bhp. If accurate, both figures would offer a significant hike over the previous-generation cars’ respective 542bhp and 572bhp efforts.

The forthcoming Porsche 911 Turbo S has been caught on camera, almost completely undisguised, during its winter development programme. The German brand’s latest range-topping sports car was due to make its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, which has since been cancelled but we will get our first official look at the new car tomorrow. Sales are still expected to start later this year.

This latest batch of spy shots gives us a reasonable indication of the new flagship 911’s styling, previewing its enormous duck-tail spoiler. Porsche has also fitted a set of flared wheel arches, new side intakes and a subtly reworked front bumper. There’s a new rear diffuser, too, which houses a set of quad-exit, square exhaust tips.

Our previous spy shots showed an equally undisguised Porsche 911 Turbo S mule in a car park, wearing the side decals destined for use on the production model.

Porsche has revealed two new optional packages for the all-new 911 Turbo S, which introduce GT3-like tweaks to the flagship sportscar.

Available on Coupe versions of the newcomer, the Lightweight package introduces a range of weight saving measures that trim the 911 Turbo S’ curb weight by 30kg, and includes some chassis revisions too.

Lighter, reduced noise insulation around the car’s bodywork contributes to the weight reduction, while the most obvious tell-tale sign is the removal of the rear seats. Up front, the front two seats are swapped for full bucket seats. Buyers who opt for the pack receive Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, 10mm lower than the standard 911 Turbo’s, while the optional sports exhaust system is also equipped, with tailpipes finished in black.

A Sport package is also introduced alongside, and builds on the pre-existing Sport Design package. It includes exclusive tail lights with a unique design, and plenty of new gloss black details and finishes on many exterior body parts. The standard Turbo S wheels are finished in dark grey, 20-inches at the front axle, with 21-inch wheels at the rear. Coupe versions of the 911 Turbo S Sport package are fitted with a carbon fibre roof, too.

Adjustable Aerodynamics on Porsche 911 Turbo S Now Include Air-Brake Function

Porsche has been tinkering with active aerodynamics on the 911 since it launched the now familiar pop-up rear spoiler on its core sports-car line more than 30 years ago, a feature that has continued in every generation of the 911 since.

But the new 911 Turbo S features considerably more adjustability and now has three moving elements. The electrically controlled rear wing can extend by as much as 3.9 inches and also tilt forward in multiple steps to as steep as a 10.5-degree angle; flaps in front of the radiators on each side of the front end can open and close; and the front lip spoiler, which consists of three separate sections, is extended into multiple combinations by the force of compressed air from a small onboard compressor.

This makes for a host of possibilities based on speed and the mode selected. For example, in Normal mode, the front flaps are open at low speeds, are regulated based on cooling needs between 43 and 93 mph, and then reopen above 93 mph. The rear wing stays put until 112 mph, when it extends. In Sport mode, the front spoiler comes into play, extending at 75 mph, the same time as the rear wing. Sport plus gets more aggressive with the rear wing, extending higher and tilting forward to its maximum angle at 9 mph, while dialing back the angle slightly above 160 mph. The claimed top speed of 205 mph is achieved in Sport mode, while Sport plus provides maximum downforce (up to 375 pounds) but a slightly reduced top speed of 198 mph. In Wet mode, the front spoiler stays put, while the rear wing extends, in an attempt to put slightly more force onto the rear tires for the sake of stability.

There's also a new air-brake function, triggered by maximum braking, that extends both the front spoiler and rear wing to their maximum-downforce positions to improve stopping

2020 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S price and specs

Porsche has unveiled its new 2021 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S models for the 992 platform, available for order now before they arrive in Australian showrooms later this year.

The Targa 4 will start from $275,800 plus on-road costs and the Targa 4S is $314,100 plus on-road costs.

The Targa variants are priced on par with the convertible 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, which are $21,900 more than equivalent coupe variants.

Both the Targa 4 and Targa 4S are powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged horizontally-opposed (or "flat") six-cylinder engine, and are only available with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

In Targa 4 guise, the engine produces 283kW and 450Nm, while the Targa 4S – which features a four-tract exhaust system design versus the Targa 4’s two-tract design – produces 331kW and 530Nm.

A new, limited edition Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition has been launched, featuring a range of interior and exterior design features inspired by Porsche’s sports cars of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

The special edition model is on sale in the UK now, priced from £136,643, with first deliveries set to arrive in autumn. Production will be limited to just 992 examples globally, to match the current generation 911’s internal model abbreviation.

Some of the visual changes for the special edition model include a new “Porsche Heritage” emblem on the luggage compartment grille, new centre-lock alloy wheels and a unique white livery, with a pair of spear-shaped graphics for the front wings – which Porsche says is reminiscent of the company’s early race cars - plus door decals and racing numbers. The Targa Heritage Edition also uses the same Porsche badge design used on the 1963 911.

The interior of this limited edition 911 Targa has an equally nostalgic design, sporting two-tone beige and red (or optionally, black) leather upholstery, corduroy seats and door trim, as well as a classic-look analogue rev-counter and stopwatch mounted on the dashboard. There’s also a unique plaque on the passenger side dash numbering each example.
