Just weeks after announcing investment of euro 650 million (Rs 4,000 crore) in India for a greenfield facility, announced earlier this year, Peugeot has decided to scrap the plan, owing to unfavourable financial conditions. Despite this, the company had said it would go ahead with the launch of one of its premium models in India, through the completely built unit, or import, route. It had said the launch of its imported models would be according to schedule, with the models hitting the Indian market by 2013-end. However, now, the company is revising the timeline yet again.

“Taking into account the European market crisis, which hit the group’s cash flow and profitability significantly, PSA Peugeot Citroën announced its intention to reschedule its project in India and its construction operations at the Sanand production facility, during the announcement of the company’s financial results on February 15,” stated an email from a company spokesperson.

“However, the Indian market remains strategic for PSA Peugeot Citroën, fitting well into the mid-term international development of the brand. The timing of the introduction of Peugeot is currently being revised in line with the rescheduling of the project,” the email added.
Peugeot recorded a loss of euro 439 million (Rs 3,000 crore) in the last financial year. For this year, it has predicted a five per cent fall in sales in Europe, led by a 10 per cent decline in France. In its latest annual report, while predicting seven per cent growth in China, the company did not specify any strategy for India.

The company was, however, in talks with potential investors for setting up dozens of dealerships across the country. It had also planned to target 100 cities in India for expansion. However, it has now put these plans on hold indefinitely.
Peugeot had planned to tap General Motors (GM)’s plants in India to produce its own range, thus saving on investment. However, these plans didn’t materialise. GM, which has two vehicle manufacturing facilities and one engine- and transmission-making unit in India, showed little interest in the venture. Sources say the alliance would be largely restricted to the European market.

In an interview to Business Standard, Tim Lee, president (international operations), General Motors, said, “The GM-PSA Peugeot Citroën alliance is an important partnership for GM. This would have a positive effect on our company worldwide, particularly in Europe. We expect it to have long-term benefits globally. However, it’s too soon to say how it would impact India and the Asia-Pacific region.”

Initially, Peugeot had planned to build an automotive and engine/gearbox plant across 600 acres in Sanand, Gujarat. This area also took account space for its parts suppliers. In addition to 5,000 jobs for the automobile hub, Peugeot and the Gujarat state planned to create an automotive skills development institute within the Sanand automotive cluster.

Peugeot aborts Operation India, surrenders land in Gujarat

Peugeot is the latest of the giant automobile brands that had big plans to enter India. The French bigwig had in mind a hefty 4,000 crore investment plan for a factory to tap into the growing Indian market.
However, the Euro crisis had thrown a big spanner in the works and Peugeot surrendered the right to the land in Sanand, Gujarat, which was acquired for the factory.
This decision had come in the light of worst ever financial crisis Peugeot is experiencing back at home.
The Paris based, heritage-rich carmaker, is routing all its resources towards rescuing its struggling European operations.
The PSA Peugeot Citroen group had signed a State Support Agreement (SSA) with the Gujarat government in September last year for setting up a green field plant with an annual capacity of 3.4 lakh units, but defaulted on the periodic payment to the Gujarat government as they decided to abort the Indian operations.
Mr. M Sahu, Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) who is aware of the situation stated that, “All their plans for India are on hold as of now.”
Peugeot had plans to make India their export base for RHD markets of ASEAN countries and Australia. The group originally planned to assemble its flagship Peugeot 508 sedan followed by B Segment hatchbacks, but sources close to the development say that India is off the radar for another three years.

Rumor-Is Peugeot in Talks With Tata Motors For a Partnership?

If similar things happen at the same time, it gives rise to a lot of speculations and rumors specially in the business world.

According to Germany’s Manager Magazin, French car maker Peugeot (PSA) is in talks with Indian Tata Motors for some kind of a partnership in case the current partnership with General Motors fail. It is also learnt that CEO of PSA, Philippe Varin and Ratan Tata are on good terms since they have done business in steel industry together.

These speculations also get fresh air considering the differences between Fiat and Tata in India. Though both the companies still have a partnership here and Tata continues to use Fiat’s engines and technologies, of late, Fiat has started to go its own way and have reduced common terms.

This Peugeot 301 sedan was expected to be the entry car for the French carmaker.
On the other hand, we have seen Peugeot cars testing in Pune (India) a couple of years back. Reports were ripe that Peugeot wanted to make an entry by using their partner GMs Indian facilities. However, reportedly, GM did not allow for this and hence we have not seen Peugeot in India yet. As we said, all these incidents at a particular juncture create a little suspicion about the possibilities.

Tata Motors have denied this report citing this as incorrect. Let us wait for a few more days and we should be seeing something materialize in case there is any substance to this speculation else this would die down as it cropped up.

Gujarat sells 200 acres allotted to Peugeot

French carmaker, PSA Peugeot Citroen, has lost a third of the land allotted to it in Sanand. After waiting for over a year for payments, the Gujarat government recently sold around 200 acres of the 584 acres allotted.

“Since the company has failed to make even a single payment, we have sold around 200 acres reserved for Peugeot to other companies keen to buy land,” confirmed two state government officials, adding the land had been sold in small parcels of 20-40 acres each.”

While the carmaker still has another 300-odd acres to set up the proposed plant, state government officials said the government might sell the remaining land, too, if the demand came up in future.

Yes, after more than a year, Peugeot in News again in India.
French auto major PSA Peugeot-Citroen, the only global automobile brand that does not have a footmark in the country till date, is considering the Indian market for the third time.
Final reports suggests that Peugeot will most likely to stick with the contract manufacturing tie-up with its global partner General Motors (GM) to reduce upfront investments.
There is a renewed focus on South Asia and Asian markets. India and other key South Asia markets continue to remain strategically important for the group.
General Motor's Talegaon plant, which Peugeot will most likely be using, currently makes the Sail, Sail U-VA and Beat models, and has an annual production capacity of 1.70 lakh cars, but it is only utilizing about 25 percent of it because of the market slowdown and lack of demand for Chevy cars

Their fate is poorer than Fiat in India.
Fiat also had this re-entry process. But every time they established and then disappeared. For Peugeot its only appear-disappear process..!!

Mahindra may tie up with France's Peugeot

If it works out, it could be the next big deal in Motown. Mahindra & Mahindra is in talks with French automobile major Peugeot for a strategic alliance that will involve technology sourcing, mutual sharing of production capacity in France and India as well as "significant investments". According to top automobile industry sources in India and France, a senior-level team from M&M has already visited the Peugeot headquarters and talks are underway "in full pitch".

When contacted, M&M refused to comment. An emailed reply by PSA Peugeot said, "PSA has recently implemented a new organization by region. The India-Pacific region shows how important the Indian market is to PSA in the future. But at this stage there are no discussions underway for a rapid return to India."

Sources say the tie-up talks include a facility swap across two continents between the auto majors. In others words, if the alliance works out, Mahindra will allow Peugeot to use its production facilities in India, for an Indian debut. Similarly, Peugeot will allow Mahindra to use one of its plants in Europe for a more local European production presence.

The tie-up may also include Mahindra sourcing engine technology, particularly diesel engine and diesel-hybrid technology, from Peugeot for its next-generation platforms. Mahindra has had a long-standing relationship with Peugeot regarding engine sourcing.

Mahindra, say sources, may also be interested in making a "significant investment" in Peugeot as part of the deal. It's not clear whether Peugeot will make a similar contribution to the Indian company as well.

Sources say Mahindra is interested in this alliance because the company feels it could help Brand Mahindra get the kind of European-global footprint and technology that Tata Motors acquired with the Jaguar-Land Rover deal. Mahindra had pulled out of JLR deal race over valuation concerns.

Peugeot has been looking for another India foray after two botched attempts spread over a decade-and-a-half.

Company officials have been quoted saying they are exploring options as far as India is concerned.

Sources say a couple of factors could have led to the renewal of interest in India. First, PSA Peugeot Citroen is now headed by ex-Nissan top executive Carlos Tavares, who was one of the key people responsible for Nissan's focus and success in India. Tavares, a Nissan-Renault old-timer, took over as the CEO of Peugeot Citroen in March and has announced the target of turning around the loss-making auto major in three years. with a 2% operating margin by the auto division by 2018 compared to -2.9% last year.

He also outlined an aggressive focus on BRIC markets, specifically mentioning China, Russia and Brazil. Peugeot announced a return to profitability last week after three years of losses thanks to cost-cutting and better products.

Peugeot's financial health turned around after a recent $4.1 billion rescue by Chinese auto major Dongfeng and the French government. Dwindling sales in Europe and elsewhere - its overall sales fell 5.4% last year - led to Peugeot Citroen totting up billions of dollars in losses every year. Its financial health was, say industry sources, one of the reasons why it decided to pull out of India. By then the Indian market had hit a slowdown and Peugeot's arrangement with then-partner General Motors did not work out.

Now both the Indian market and Peugeot's own fortunes have revived.

Peugeot announced its return to India - after a disastrous tie-up with the Premier group in the mid-90s - in early 2011 with a $1-billion investment for a plant in Sanand in Gujarat. But it put the plan on hold Both projects were subsequently put on hold in 2012 as the French major opted to focus on attention on its home markets and financial health and its own financial health.

Sources say one of the factors in the current alliance talks between Mahindra and Peugeot could be the French company's Chinese partner Dongfeng. "It's not clear where Dongfeng figures in these talks and if they would be interested in Peugeot going in for a deep and multi-pronged tie-up with another automotive major," said a person with knowledge of the talks. "That and the Peugeot family's own ownership and control interests would be important factors in deciding the fate of the alliance talks," he added.

Re: Peugeot 208 coming to India

Am I seeing a left handed driving machine then i don't think it's coming to India. Maybe someone is testing the engine or stuffs. I can only believe that it's coming to India if it's right handed drive and wearing red number plates which is missing here. It maybe someone exported this model for their personnel use even then left hand drive ... meh.
