Hi Friends,

My car has a new issue now (Maruti 800), when ever I drive in traffic I get too much petrol smell inside the cabin, if I drive in highways for long distances it wont be present.. If I drive the car just 2 to 3 kms in traffic I get the smell.[frustration].

I also got the car checked by my regular mechanic, he tightened all the hose ends , told me every thing is fine.

I get smell from 2 sides, one is from the rear left near the petrol cap(inside side pad) and the other one below the dash board.

Also these days my car is making sound like an race car after crossing 2000rpm..so even the pick up has decreased..struggles to cross 80kmph.

Members please suggest..[:)]

Re: Petrol smell inside the car / Issues in Maruti 800

Is this a carb or a mpfi 800? sorry if i may have missed your ownership report :)

We used to have a premier padmini and often used to get this smell, that basically was the smell of fuel arising from carb overflowing. But still, there are many gurus around here who can guide more. Request Ilango/cooldhaya to jump in :)

I guess the shivering is due to wheel alignment and balancing..

First thing, get the fuel lines checked. It's a good idea to have all the rubber hoses changed, if you haven't changed them already.

Your other problem, that is, shivering could be due to various reasons:
1. Incorrect air pressure in the tyres
2. Wheel alignment problems
3. Bad suspension components
4. Drive shaft nearing its expiry date (if you get a tak-tak sound also)
5. Engine mounts not tightened to the required torque

Please suggest, as the problem is increasing day by day.. now as soon as I start my car and keep it idle for 5 minutes I am getting the petrol smell...
I'll post an update in a week's time.

It seems there is no solution for this.

My friend's Estilo is having same problem and it was there in his earlier M800 also.

He has taken up with MASS several times but could not fix it.

Anyway you can live with it. Its only for some time and do not have any safety concerns other than lack of comfort feeling.

But the smell increases a lot, if I turn on the blower/fan the smell increases more..

In my friend's 800, they have totally disconnected the breather pipe, he is having no issues.
Is this a solution ?

NEVER disconnect the breather pipe. It could prove extremely dangerous. Please get all the fuel lines checked. There is definitely a fuel leak somewhere which is the cause of the smell.

Just checked again with my friend - TAI member Furtunerx.

Keep the AC switched on and the smell vanishes after 20-30 minutes.

Since your car is old, you can try some workshops other than MASS.

In the case of furtunerx, this problem started after 2 years of buying and MASS tried several things but was of no use.
Then he shown it in Tata Service Center managed by a friend of him. They did something (disconnecting breather pipe is not a solution) and fixed it. Issue was not there for 6-7 months and then started again after doing a routine service at MASS.
