Mandatory Recall Policy - Automobile companies resist

The draft proposal says the national authority on vehicle regulation and road safety can order mandatory recall of vehicles if it receives 100 or more complaints about a particular defect in any vehicle model which could cause harm to occupants or road users.
It also specifies that manufacturers whose vehicles are subject to a recall order would have to compensate buyers for the full value of the vehicle or replace or repair the defective vehicle with another vehicle of similar or better specifications

Government sources said the automobile lobby wants this proposal to be dropped and continuation of the present mechanism of "voluntary recall".

More benefits for the automotive companies. Many companies did a voluntary recall just to show that they care and now when it's no longer mandatory , they'll go back to their previous states," Why recall ? Let it be."

Re: Official Auto “Recall” Policy in India

Friends,

Of all the vehicles in total which are recalled by various automobile brands in India, of them, only half get properly repaired!

Carmakers in India have embarked on a 'voluntary' recall journey since July 2012 and in the last four years they have announced a recall of over 2.2 million vehicles made and sold by them in the country.

On the ground, however, on a cumulative basis it is estimated that they have successfully been able to fix only 50-60% of the vehicles.
