A new verdict from High Court comes as a big blow to those who intend to import big flashy cars in India to flaunt their social status. The new verdict from High court will prevent illegal imports of cars, MUVs, superbikes in India. The new ruling states that importer has to have lived abroad continuously for two years and owning the car in order to import the vehicle.

High court passed a judgement on case against Ganji Malliah, an illiterate carpenter from Andhra Pradesh. A Toyota Cynos, owned by a Japanese citizen Ochiai Hidenori was imported in India using Ganji’s passport. Customs had confiscated the vehicle in 2000 and Ganji had denied either being the owner of the vehicle or importing any such vehicle. He had stated two Telugu speaking men had given him Rs 5,000 to use his passport to import light bulbs. Later, Ganji had retracted his denial and appealed against the plea. Then the customs tribunal had released the car in 2004 stating that it was not necessary for him to know the funding of the car. Director General of Foreign Trade issued ruling in April 2000 for import of restricted automobiles. The policy permits passenger car/jeeps, MUVs and other vehicles, which are in the restricted category, to be imported without a licence on payment of full customs duty by individuals coming to India for permanent settlement after two years continuous stay abroad. The condition placed on such import is the car is not to be sold for two years thereafter.

The new verdict will especially affect Bollywood Stars and high profile Indians where illegal imports of benami cars still take place, reports TOI.

Good that stricter rules are being enforced to prevent such cases in future. Sometimes these beautiful imported cars are left unclaimed and eat dust forever. I witnessed once such incident near my residence where a Cresta was eating dust since months. The cops towed the car after investigation when they failed to find the owner.

^True. Check out the very 1st edition (Sep 99!) of ACI. To this day, there are Miatas, Rolls Royce, Jags, Mercs, old & new Beetles, Toyotas, Land Rovers, Ferraris and what not, lying neglected, many of them for 2-3 decades together.

The problem here is that, in most cases when such a car is impounded, the penalty charged is often much higher than the car's actual price, so the importer of the car finds it wiser to forget about the car. During auctions, prospective buyers are asked to pay the value of the car + huge charges towards parking incurred by the customs/authorities. Ironically, HUMUNGOUS parts of customs space is eaten up by such cars, and the loss incurred by the govt. is much more than what they would EARN by selling these off/having lower penalty amounts.

What is the problem with the India government for not allowing Indian companies to produced above 400cc and not importing vehicle its actually injustice that the India auto market is not to the top level and up to mark that the reason people with big fame have imported cars. Innovate technology.

heavy duties are implied b'coz our govt wants to discourage imports on big items..and force companies to settle their plants in india only which will help in many ways. but this is very bad news for us car lovers because not all companies are not establishing plants here!! [anger]

Imported SUV catches traffic police , RTO by surprise.

An imported SUV been caught by traffic police with different number plate.

CEO of an IT firm alerted authorities that a vehicle with Arabic number plate was being driven about the city

A*Toyota FJ Cruiser with an Abu Dhabi registration and the number plate in Arabic has been moving all over Bangalore without proper documents for a week, in gross violation of Motor Vehicles Act.
On Monday morning, Mohan Rajamani, CEO of Cash Technologies and co-founder of Learnhive Education Pvt Ltd, was driving his Range Rover near Lalbagh when he noticed the impressive Toyota FJ Cruiser. Rajamani also noticed that the registration board was in Arabic, in violation of the rule that requires all vehicles to have the registration in English. He found it odd. How could a vehicle registration that cannot be deciphered by the local police or the RTO be allowed to move around in the city?

Why doesn't the govt. just allow imports with a sensible amount of duty. At least we don't have the take the overpriced nonsense that the manufacturers throw at us.
