Maruti targets niche segment with 3-row, diesel WagonR.
Maruti Suzuki is now targeting niche segments to further boost volumes and fend off new rivals. Under project code ‘YCA’, the company is completely overhauling one of its top-selling cars, the WagonR, by adding a third-seating row to make it a seven-seater and adding a diesel engine. The overall length, however, would be under four metres to avail excise duty benefits.
YCA will take form as the third-generation WagonR, slated for launch in mid-2017. Priced aggressively around Rs 5 lakh, it will compete with the likes of Datsun’s upcoming Go+ and the Mahindra Quanto, both of which offer seven seats.
The new WagonR is going on in the India R&D. The company sees major potential for a low-priced 7-seater vehicle coming with Suzuki’s reliability, especially in the rural market which is today almost a third of total sales.

2017 Maruti WagonR price, specifications, features, interior and equipment | Autocar India - Autocar India
For 2017, Maruti is updating the WagonR line and the big news is that the car will be based on the current Stingray variant. The Stingray brand name itself will be retired and the line-up will now have a new top-end variant called the VXi+.

Currently, very few Stingrays sell and production is minimal. Most dealers do not even accept bookings for the car. Thus, rather than further invest in keeping the brand alive, Maruti has chosen to retire the nameplate and use the car as an update for the 2017 WagonR model year which will be called the Maruti WagonR Refresh.

While the exteriors will be that of the outgoing Stingray, the interiors will feature the black and beige colour treatment as in the current WagonR. The Maruti WagonR refresh will carry over its 1.0 K-Series petrol engine unchanged and will continue to offer the option of an AMT automatic; a five-speed manual will be standard. Plus, like the current model, it will be available with a factory-fitted CNG kit. Prices start from Rs 4.13 lakh (ex,showroom, Delhi).

Variant Prices
LXi Rs 4.13 lakh
LXi(O) Rs 4.46 lakh
LXi CNG Rs 4.68 lakh
LXi(O) CNG Rs 4.87 lakh
VXi Rs 4.41 lakh
VXi+ Rs 4.70 lakh
VXi(O) Rs 4.74 lakh
VXi+(O) Rs 4.89 lakh
VXi AGS (AMT) Rs 4.88 lakh
VXi+ AGS (AMT) Rs 5,17 lakh
VXi(O) AGS (AMT) Rs 5.21 lakh
VXi+(O) Rs 5.36 lakh
The starting price for the updated Wagon remain the same as the older model's. However, additional equipment like the projector headlamps, alloy wheels and a sporty body kit make the top-end variant costlier by about Rs 16,000.

Here’s an equipment breakup:

Maruti WagonR Refresh LXi (Petrol and CNG)

  • AC with heater
  • 60:40 split rear seat
  • Central locking
  • Dual-tone interior
  • Power steering
  • Front power windows
  • 12V power socket
  • Body coloured bumpers
  • Roof rails|
  • Side body mouldings
Maruti WagonR Refresh VXi (Petrol MT and AMT)

  • Tachometer
  • Music system with four speakers
  • Front and rear power windows
  • Electric wing mirrors
  • Tilt steering
  • Rear wiper, washer and defogger
  • Fog lamps
  • Piano black trim on dash
  • Remote keyless entry

Maruti WagonR Refresh VXi+ (Petrol MT and AMT)

  • Stingray-like front grille
  • Projector headlamps
  • Gunmetal grey alloy wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Side skirts
  • Driver airbag
Like the 2016 model, Maruti is also offering option pack on all variants which includes dual front airbags and ABS.
WagonR 2017 update spied. Interiors to get beige-black combination. Stingray to be rebadged as WagonR VXI+

All-New Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R Spied

All-new Maruti WagonR hatchback spied testing in India. Speculated to come in both a 5 seat and 7 seat versions.

The car will be launched in India next year. It will continue to be a tall-boy hatchback but will get a new exterior design for a more modern look and feel. Most other details about this car are not known for now.

Maruti is also expected to develop the new car with an electric option also in mind for the future. For now though, the cost conscious budget car market is expected to get a mechanically similar (to the older version) vehicle in the new WagonR. The new car will also be ready to meet the tighter Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms, in addition to the stricter safety norms under Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP).

Next Gen Wagon R spotted undisguised in India.

Set to be launched in the coming months, the new 5 seater WagonR is slated to be positioned on a lightweight HEARTECT platform – just like the new Swift and Dzire.

Sporting the distinct tall boy design, exterior features include wrap around headlamps, a horizontal bar running across front grille sporting the distinct Suzuki logo and badge (Maruti name is missing, just like is seen in all new cars from the company), 4 slat air dam, etc. It sits on steel wheels, rear section is now revised, and features LED tail lamps.

After all this hullabaloo about the new Wagon R, ladies and gentlemen presenting the same old wine in a new bottle.

Noticeable Outer changes:
1. Headlights.
2. Door handles, pull type.
3. Bonnet.
4. Taillight.
5. Rear hatch.

Carried over from earlier generations:
1. Pull type antenna. (much lower priced cars have roof mounted)
2. Door and Windows same?
3. Grill and lower bumper.

Will be interesting to know the dimensions, to ascertain the width, as due to the hatch looks slightly wider.

Spot on point of view NanoFreak.
I felt exactly the same after going through pics. It is more like a modified version of Wagon R atleast from exterior.
I guess the interiors would be similar to the Celerio or maybe like Ignis on the top-end version.
WagonR deserved a better makeover than this, its still a favourite of many Indians.

New Maruti WagonR India launch early 2019 – Rivals new Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago

Maruti WagonR, one of the company’s more popular models ever since it was launched in 1999, is set to get a new generation update. The next gen WagonR has been spied on test in India, and though heavily camouflaged, several exterior features have come to the fore.

Thanks to the spy shots, it is confirmed that the new WagonR for India is infact the 6th generation WagonR which is already on sale in Japan. What we have in India today on sale is the 2nd gen WagonR. 3rd gen of WagonR never came to India, 4th gen was launched as Stingray, 5th gen was skipped. But no more skipping new gen, as India is all ready to implement Bharat NCAP from next year.

India-spec WagonR will be same as Japan-spec WagonR as seen in the image above.

Once Bharat NCAP is implemented, no car maker will be able to sell a car which does not pass the crash test. And WagonR being one of the top 5 best selling car in India, Maruti would definitely want the car to be on offer after Bharat NCAP implementation as well. Which is why we will be getting the new Maruti WagonR 6th gen early next year, reports Car and Bike.

Based on Maruti’s new Heartect platform which also underpins the Ignis, Baleno and Swift, 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR will get bigger and longe than before. It will get larger windows and vertically stacked tail lamps. Larger headlamps in a square design, revised bumper and large air dam will also be a part of its front end features while the sides see a prominent line running across the profile. Changes to the rear include a large windscreen and tail lamps positioned below the bumper.

Interiors get more premium with a larger touchscreen infotainment system, power windows and manual air conditioning. The new WagonR also gets enhanced safety features with ABS offered as standard, seat belt warning light, reverse parking sensors and twin airbags which will comply with new safety norms coming into effect from October 2019 and will also adhere to the new crash test regulations being introduced in India.

Engine specifications on 2018 Maruti Suzuki WagonR will be the same as that seen on its current counterpart. New WagonR 5 seater variant will be powered by a 1.0 liter petrol engine. Transmission options will be in the form of manual 5 speed and AMT. The new WagonR could also get CNG and LPG fuel options at launch. Expect a slight bump in price tag, thanks to added features and improved safety. 2019 Maruti WagonR price range est. Rs 4.5 to Rs 5.5 lakhs.

Tall Boy Wars II: Next-Gen Maruti WagonR Will Take On The New Santro In Early 2019

To be here in early 2019, the next-gen Maruti WagonR’s styling will retain a silhouette similar to the current car. But how that metal will be coated, bent and hammered will be slightly different. It won’t look as whacky as the updated Kei car which was dished out in Japan last year, but the styling in general will be toned down to suit Indian tastes.
