The mid-life facelift for the Toyota HiLux is due in Australian showrooms in late August, dealers have been told.

This is about a month later than the third week of July – the original arrival date – but earlier than expected after dealers asked for the new model to be delayed amid fears they were overstocked with the runout vehicle.

Stronger than expected sales of the Toyota HiLux in late April and throughout May has seen a return to form faster than the industry had initially forecast in the wake of the coronavirus lockdowns.

Images of what appeared to be a facelifted Toyota HiLux were published by a website in the Middle East earlier this year, however it is unclear if they are official photos, or renderings of what the new model could look like.

New Toyota Hilux: official photos, more power, due in August

The new Toyota HiLux has been officially unveiled after months of spy photos and speculation.

The biggest update to the Toyota HiLux since this generation was introduced in 2015 includes a bold new nose – with a larger grille and bumper, and redesigned headlight internals – a fresh set of wheels, and LED tail-lights on certain models.

Pricing for the new Toyota HiLux is yet to be announced, but increases are likely when the range arrives in local showrooms in late August, given the weakening Australian dollar.

The power output of the 2.8-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder has increased from the current model’s 130kW/450Nm for the automatic and 130kW/420Nm for the manual, to 150kW/500Nm for the automatic and 150kW/420Nm for the manual.

The images show the updated Toyota HiLux carries over the same core structure and main bodywork as today’s model. The bold new nose brings the Toyota HiLux closer to the tough truck look of the Toyota Tacoma sold in the US.

The suspension upgrades include "revised shock-absorber tuning, new bushings and improved leaf-spring design - provide a more comfortable ride, particularly over rough roads and with low loads while maintaining HiLux's legendary off-road capabilities", says Toyota.

As reported earlier, the new Hilux gains a revised 2.8-litre turbodiesel with increased power figures. Compared to the outgoing 2.8-litre unit, the improved 2.8-litre delivers 204 PS and 500 Nm, 27 PS and 50 Nm more than before.

Power figures for 2.4-litre turbodiesel unit remain unchanged – 151 PS and 400 Nm. Despite not receiving an increase in power, the 2.4-litre unit is said to deliver better fuel efficiency than before

Next up is the visual changes – the top-of-the-line Hilux Revo Rocco gains a revised front-end that is heavily-inspired by the US market Toyota Tacoma, featuring a more angular and pronounced front grille flanked by a pair of LED headlights.

Moving inside, for the Thai market, all variants of the updated Hilux gain an 8-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay support. That said, upper variants ( Revo PreRunner, Revo Z Edition, Revo Rocco) have more physical buttons surrounding the touchscreen, while the Revo Standard Cab features a more simple-looking head unit.

2021 Toyota HiLux prices confirmed, Rugged X and Rogue unveiled

The 2021 Toyota Rugged X and Rogue have been unveiled ahead of their showroom arrival later this year.

Toyota has also released fresh images and details on the rest of the 2021 HiLux ute range.

As reported by CarAdvice previously, the 2021 Toyota HiLux comes in for significant price rises, as well as a new front bumper and headlights, a more powerful 2.8-litre turbo diesel, while creature comforts include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a digital speed display across all models.

Every model in the 2021 Toyota HiLux range will get a new nose except the base model tradie version (which historically sells from $24,990 drive-away).

The flagship Rugged X gets new driving light surrounds and garnishes between the headlights and front bumper.

Toyota has also confirmed the popular SR5 model grade will be available in a slightly cheaper cab-chassis form, so tradies and farmers don’t need to replace the style side box.
