Nissan’s third-generation Qashqai will go on sale this year, sporting a pair of new hybrid powertrains, an updated version of the current car’s CMF underpinnings and a sleek design makeover. Nissan is also considering ditching the Qashqai’s diesel engine to help lower the SUV’s carbon emissions.

Nissan has also confirmed that there won’t be a pure-electric version of the new Qashqai. Full electric power will be reserved for a seperate SUV model based on an all-new platform, which is likely to underpin a whole family of electric cars spanning the B, C and D segments for Nissan and its Alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi.

The next-generation Qashqai will be based on an updated version of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s CMF platform, which offers support for electrification. There won’t be EV variant of the Qashqai with that niche instead being filled by the Japanese brand’s forthcoming all-electric SUV, which was previewed by the Ariya concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

The new Qashqai will be offered with two hybrid powertrains – one featuring Nissan’s innovative ePower system and one sporting Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. The former system is currently found in the Japanese-delivered Nissan Note, where it’s proven popular. It’s a series hybrid system featuring a petrol engine that works as a generator to charge the battery, which then powers an electric motor.

New 2020 Nissan Qashqai SUV spied for the first time

Nissan Qashqai.jpg

This is our first look at the third-generation Nissan Qashqai SUV, spied in the hands of Nissan engineers ahead of its full debut towards the end of 2020.

Nissan Qashqai-3.jpg

It’s a hugely important car for the British motor industry. Not only is the Qashqai one of the most popular crossovers on sale in the UK, it’s also the most mass produced car in Britain, with Nissan’s Sunderland plant producing 257,851 examples in 2019. This all-new version will be built there too, as part of a £400m investment in the plant revealed by Nissan in March.

The car in these first spy shots is a late development mule wearing near production bodywork under heavy camouflage. It’s difficult to make out fine details, but the exterior redesign is likely to echo that of the next X-Trail - leaked earlier this year in a series of patent images.

As is the current trend, expect the headlights to become slimmer, with the grille to grow in size, while the Qashqai will likely embrace a sportier image, hinted at by the IMQ concept car revealed at the Geneva motor show in 2019.

When it goes on sale hybrid power will be a part of the package for the first time in a Qashqai thanks to an updated version of the current car’s CMF underpinnings. Nissan is also considering ditching the Qashqai’s diesel engine to help lower the SUV’s carbon emissions

Next-generation Nissan Qashqai spied ahead of 2020 launch

Nissan Qashqai.jpg

We’ve spied the third-generation Nissan Qashqai undergoing testing ahead of its full debut towards the end of 2020. When it arrives, the Japanese brand’s latest family SUV will offer fresh competition for the SEAT Ateca, Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage.

Although the mule in these images is still wearing heavy camouflage, this is our clearest look yet at the new Qashqai’s styling. It’s difficult to pick out the finer details, but the SUV’s design should echo that of Nissan’s upcoming replacement for the X-Trail.

When it arrives, the Mk3 Qashqai will be a hugely important car for the British motor industry. Not only is the current model one of the most popular crossovers on sale in the UK, it’s also the most mass produced car in Britain, with Nissan’s Sunderland plant producing 257,851 examples in 2019 alone. This all-new version will be built at the same facility, following a £400m investment in the plant, which was revealed by Nissan in March.

New 2021 Nissan Qashqai interior unveiled

Nissan Qashqai exclusive images.jpg

Nissan has flung open the doors of its engineering department to provide us with an in-depth look at the new Qashqai’s interior. The Japanese brand says the new model will offer more practicality, better packaging and improved technology – all within a body shell that’s only marginally larger than the previous-generation model’s

The third-generation Nissan Qashqai is 35mm longer and 30mm wider than its predecessor which, thanks to some clever organisation, has provided 22mm-worth of extra knee room for rear seat passengers and 28mm more shoulder room for those up front. Front and rear headroom has also improved by around 15mm, thanks to the redesign.

he cabin is littered with a range of incremental improvements. For example, the cupholders are now mounted lower down in the centre console, so the driver doesn’t clout their elbow on their drink when they change gear, and there’s a new smartphone charging pad in the centre console which was designed to fit the largest phones on the market.
Technology gets a boost, too. Nissan has fitted a new nine-inch infotainment system, which comes pre-loaded with a host of connected services, such as fuel price comparison, live traffic information and a speed camera location service, provided by TomTom.

It’s joined by a customisable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.8-inch head-up display, which can provide information on speed, navigation and driver assistance systems. Nissan even drafted in the Japanese game developer, Bandai Namco, to design the Qashqai’s various warning sounds, such as its seat belt reminder.

Massaging seats are also now available for front seat passengers, which Nissan says is a first for the Qashqai’s segment. The brand hopes that all of these technology improvements will help it capture buyers who are downsizing from larger vehicles, by offering a similar level of comfort from the class above.

It isn’t all bells and whistles, though – Nissan has also improved the old Qashqai’s boot, as the previous model lagged behind its competitors. The slightly larger body means there’s now 504 litres of space on offer, which is an increase of 74 litres over the Mk2 Qashqai – and enough of a gain to bring the SUV’s boot into contention with the SEAT Ateca’s.

The old Qashqai’s versatile luggage boards have also been retained across the generation change – but now they’re reversible. So, one side is trimmed to match the carpet in the SUV’s boot, while the other features a wipe-down plastic coating, which Nissan says will make the boot floor easier to clean.

New Nissan Qashqai: platform and powertrains
All of the Qashqai’s improvements are helped along by the shift to a new platform, as the latest model will move onto the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-C platform. It’s an updated version of the current vehicle’s underpinnings, which uses more ultra-high-strength steel before, while also being lighter, better at absorbing impacts and 41 percent stiffer.

Nissan says that drivers will feel these changes behind the wheel because, alongside the improvements to comfort, safety and technology, the brand’s engineers are working on ways to make the next Qashqai better to drive than its predecessor.

So, it’ll feature new MacPherson struts front and rear – both of which will have reprofiled dampers that are designed to offer a good compromise between handling and comfort. All-wheel-drive versions will feature multi-link rear suspension in place of a torsion beam and Nissan has worked on the car’s steering system, claiming improved responsiveness.
