Beijing-Hyundai is set to introduce the next gen Hyundai Tucson. The SUV spied on test is a 7 seater version, which sports a notably different exterior design to the global 2019 Tucson unveiled at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year.

Images of China-spec 7-seater Hyundai ix35 in three rows of seating has surfaced online – indicating that Beijing Hyundai is working on a long body version. This new Hyundai Tucson 7 seater on test shows off the stretched wheelbase and elongated C pillars.

It also sports a cascading grille, two tier lighting set up as seen on the Hyundai Kona, while at the rear, new tail light graphics and a red stripe reflector connects the tail lamps. The license plate is also in a new design and larger than that seen on its earlier counterpart.

The China spec 2018 Hyundai Tucson SUV will measure 4,545 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 1,655 mm in height. No engine details have been revealed as on date, but its older version was powered by a 1.6 liter, turbocharged petrol engine offering 177 PS power and 265 Nm torque and a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine capable of 165 PS power and 203 Nm torque.

In India, Hyundai is slated to bring in the global-spec 2019 Tucson sometime in 2020. It will be offered in both 5 and 7 seater versions and in petrol and diesel engine options in both 2WD and 4WD formats.

The current model retails in India from Rs 18.29 lakhs to Rs 25.74 lakhs. This older model is assembled in India, but Hyundai could plan local manufacture of its new gen model so as to ensure more affordable pricing. Once launched in India, it will rival with the likes of Mahindra XUV700, which will be launched next month.

Next-gen Hyundai Tucson to get three-row seating

Even while the current-gen Hyundai Tucson is in the middle of its lifecycle - with a facelift due in India next year - the Korean company is already at a fairly advanced stage in the design and development of the next generation Tucson, which is set to make its global debut in 2021.

According to company sources, the next-gen Tucson will grow in every dimension, especially in length and wheelbase, to accommodate a third row of seats. “The next-gen Tucson will be sold only as a seven-seater in the Indian market” said a Hyundai official. However, for international markets, it is likely that the Tucson will be available with both five- and seven-seat options.

With the next-gen Creta (code: SU2) growing in size too and also getting a third row of seats in 2021, this seven-seat mid-size SUV will move closer to the current Tucson, both in terms of dimensions and price. Hence, Hyundai wants to push the next-gen Tucson further upmarket to make room for its smaller sibling. However, to achieve a premium positioning and make the estimated price tag of Rs 30 lakh acceptable to the customer, the Korean auto major feels that an extra row of seats is essential. “SUVs above Rs 20 lakh need to have a third row of seats if they are to sell in large numbers” said a Hyundai source. In fact, the next-gen Tucson is likely to go head on against higher priced soft-roaders such as the Skoda Kodiaq and the new Honda CR-V, which also comes (for the first time ever) with an extra row of seats.

Also, the 2021 Tucson will effectively replace the Santa Fe. “We don’t see a future for the Santa Fe once the seven-seater Tucson is launched” says a company source. What’s certain is the all-new Santa Fe - already on sale abroad - will not be launched in India.

Hyundai is also working on making the next-gen Tucson as luxurious as possible and certain variants will get a pair of plush ‘captain’ seats for the middle row. Other features such as a head-up display, wireless charging and advanced telematics will be standard on the higher variants. Also, by the time the next-gen Tucson is launched, it will come with the latest diesel and petrol powertrains that will comply with not just BS-VI emission norms but also the tougher RDE (Real Driving Emissions) cycle that is expected to come into effect in 2023.

The magic of the hot-selling Creta hasn’t rubbed off on the Tucson, but Hyundai is hopeful that when the bigger, plusher and far more spacious replacement for the current Tucson is launched, it will deliver a value proposition that will be hard to resist.

Hyundai Tucson facelift coming in May 2019

Hyundai will bring the updated Tucson to India in May 2019. The refreshed SUV made its global debut a few months ago at the 2018 New York motor show.

As part of the mid-cycle refresh, the Tucson gets styling tweaks to its nose and a mild design update to the headlights, which are now full-LED units – at least on the top-spec trim. The grille now comes with Hyundai’s cascade look and the SUV also gets restyled bumpers and fog lamp housings.

The Hyundai Tucson facelift will also get more equipment than the outgoing model; a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the brand’s BlueLink connectivity suite, a 360-degree camera and adaptive cruise control are expected to be on offer, at least on the top-spec variants. The new Tucson will also feature mechanical changes in the form of BS6-compliant versions of the current model’s 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. However, the same 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options are expected to be on offer. Like with the current Tucson, the refreshed model is likely to come with an AWD option in the range-topping diesel-automatic version.

2020 Hyundai Tucson bookings open – Specs, engines, variants, features

hyundai-tucson-2020-auto-expo-bs6-debut-16.jpg

Hyundai India dealers have started accepting bookings for the 2020 Tucson, for a token amount of Rs 25,000. The facelifted avatar of the second-gen Hyundai Tucson (third-gen globally) was showcased at Auto Expo 2020. The first-generation Hyundai Tucson was introduced in the country back in 2005 and the current model has been on the Indian market since 2016.

Now, we bring you all the important details of the new 2020 Hyundai Tucson; the flagship ICE SUV from the South Korean brand (after the discontinuation of the Santa Fe). To start off, the premium SUV (technically, a compact crossover) will be available in three variants: GL 2WD, GLS 2WD and GLS 4WD. While the front-wheel-drive GL and GLS are available in both petrol and diesel formats, the top-end GLS all-wheel-drive comes only with a diesel powertrain. None of the variants come with a manual transmission.
