Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna Review Synopsis:
  • Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna price tag is between Rs.7.73 – 12.19 Lacs (Ex.showroom, Delhi). It officially launched in India on 18th Feb 2015.
  • It is available in total six variants (both, Petrol as well as Diesel) with choice of 5 / 6 speed manual as well as 4 speed automatic transmission.
  • Hyundai claims primary target customer for Verna are young married couples in their 30’s – 40’s, who are attention seekers and tech savvy.
  • Under the hood, engine options on the New Verna remain same as earlier (1.4 & 1.6 Petrol and Diesel) but with a slight boost in fuel efficiency.
  • Strong points of Verna include its elegant design and plush interiors. But on flip side, its major USPs are being quickly taken over by the competition.
Note: This review primarily focuses on the main highlights of 2015 model since this car in general is already extensively covered in our 2011 Fluidic Verna Review.

Hyundai Verna 2015: Overview and Design

“Verna” is a household name in India since 2006, although its roots are associated to Accent which arrived as early as in 1999. The car received its first significant upgrade in 2011 that became known as Fluidic Verna, and saved the sedan from losing its much cherished crown to equally established names like Honda City, Maruti Suzuki SX4 and then-newcomer, Volkswagen Vento. It continued to enjoy a reasonable share of market sales but it was only until sometime back when battle ground took up the heat. And to make the situation from bad to worse, Honda had readied City Diesel while Maruti Suzuki was all-set with SX4 replacement, the Ciaz. Though the Verna, by no means, has been an all-rounder but it successfully did the job of satisfying the demands of majority of customers in the targeted segment using good ol’ Hyundai formula. i.e. striking design, incredible amount of features and comfort at a cut-throat price tag.

With this facelift, the company has made a serious effort to iron out a few of the major issues this car was always criticized for time and again. But then, it comes at a cost of dearer price tag. Hyundai is primarily aiming to retail New Verna to married couples who are in their 30’s – 40’s and are attention seekers as well as tech savvy. To go along with this branding philosophy, it has also thrown in a new “4S” moniker as prefix (on lines of all the latest Hyundai cars). The 4S is supposed to stand for Style, Safety, Speed and Sophistication. However, just like Elite i20, there’s no apparent ‘4S’ badging on 4S Fluidic Verna whatsoever. As a matter of fact, the car remains substantially unchanged and for casual onlookers, only the face is going to appear unique at first sight.

Globally, this face isn’t all-new per-se. From the beginning, fourth generation Verna was sold with similar shaped headlamps and grille in China. This exact facelift (4S) rolled out there early last year. For Indians, it’s truly a welcome change. Verna now looks much more mature than earlier. Even though Hyundai has decided to retain its flamboyance, but it’s now disguised in the tinge of subtlety. Projector-equipped headlamps have borrowed cues from that of more upmarket Sonata (which in turn seems inspired from Genesis saloon). Front wing-shaped grille has gone wider that radically contributes to enhance the presence while sharp boomerang styled foglamps instantly exude sportiness. All in all, such upgrades have helped making the front-end fuller and premium.

Rear profile, on the other hand, has least amount of transformation whereas designers have left side profile untouched totally (if stunning diamond-cut alloys are overlooked). Tail lamps look familiar, unless you spend a moment to observe carefully. They offer LED-like effect ala Audi et al. The edges elongated on the fender now also bear a wing-like pattern. Bumper is slightly reworked too, with the most prominent update being nicely chiseled reflectors which appear somewhat in-tune with design of the stoplamp area of tail lamps assembly. Surprisingly, Hyundai has done away with the exposed dual tail pipes; instead, there’s now only a single tailpipe modestly tucked under the skin. You’ll also find a less cluttered tailgate, which has been achieved by keeping the amount of badges to minimum.

Hyundai Verna 2015: Interiors, Features and Comfort

There’s not a single major change on the inside. However, lavish is the word that says it all when it comes to the interiors of Fluidic Verna. As with all Hyundai cars, dashboard is made up of extremely well-finished and superior plastic quality (although not necessarily as rugged as of Vento). The dashboard design may not be most modern (like that of Honda City) but it can’t be called dated either at all. It still feels refreshing every time you get in. The sweetly blended combination of beige and dark grey shade, coupled with a hint of rosewood and silver makes the overall interiors appear incredibly posh. Among few of the newly added bits in this part of the car include tilt as well as telescopic adjustable steering wheel (formerly it was only tilt), audio system with 1 GB internal storage memory and something what Hyundai prefers to call ‘Ergo’ lever which is situated on right side of front passenger seat. It allows rear occupant to push forward this seat to increase own legroom.

One of the minor yet useful updates also incorporates revised color contrast of the head unit and climate control screens. There’s now light text on dark background opposed to dark text on light background, therefore making it more legible under direct sunlight. Hyundai has opted to leave out the touch screen head unit, which most of us anticipated, for a later point of time. Front bucket-like seats are not only wide and supportive enough but are beautifully cushioned too. Specifically the perforated artificial-leather upholstery on top variants feels highly rich in terms of quality. Driver’s seat is height adjustable while seatbelt height adjust feature is standard on both the front seats. The front armrest is another incredibly practical feature for relaxed long distance cruising (which Verna does the best). It can slide forward for the convenience of those with shorter arms. Flip it up to access hidden storage area that’s 5” broad and deep enough to keep a 500ml bottle.

As obvious as it may now seem, lack of cubbyholes is never going to be complained by those who travel in a Verna. There are proper 1L water bottle holders on all four doors (coupled with a magazine holder on front), a fairly deep and cooled glovebox, under armrest storage space and then some more in the center console. Hyundai has maintained a huge focus on enhancing the comfort levels in this car and it clearly shows. The rear door opens reasonably wide but coupe-like slanting roofline might cause inconvenience to senior-citizens during ingress or egress. The rear seat is still positioned low but the seat base is now better contoured in an effort improve under thigh support. The rear bench, by design, can accommodate only two in supreme comfort. Perhaps that’s also the reason why the carmaker has done away with the third headrest too although there’s a provision of seatbelt for third passenger.

Hyundai Verna 2015: Performance, Braking, Ride and Handling

Hyundai Verna continues to offer the wide choice of engine as well as of transmission options: 1.4L and 1.6 Petrol and Diesel. Former mill is equipped under the hood of base variants. The 1396 CC petrol motor delivers 107 PS @ 6300 RPM and torque of 13.8 Kgm @ 5000 RPM. It’s mated to a 5 speed gearbox. 1.4L diesel on the other hand, produces 90 PS @ 4000 RPM and 22.4 Kgm torque @ 1750 – 2750 RPM through six speed manual gearbox. But real deal are the truly refined 1.6L engines. The 1.6L VTVT Petrol churns out 123 PS @ 6300 RPM and 15.8 Kgm torque @ 4200 RPM whereas CRDI (diesel) is delightful performer with 128 PS @ 4000 RPM and torque of 26.5 Kgm @ 1900 - 2750 on a tap of throttle. Both 1.6l units offer a selection of four-speed automatic transmission as well.

Good news is that fuel economy figures have been upped to a decent degree. Thanks to low-friction, nano-diamond piston coatings, 1.4L Diesel is now capable to deliver 24.8 Kmpl while 1.6L returns 23.9 Kmpl opposed to 23.5 Kmpl and 21.9 respectively. On the flip side, 1.4 Petrol and Diesel model deliver 17.43 Kmpl and 24.8 Kmpl respectively. We extensively drove the top-end 1.6 CRDI manual and can safely call it one of the most well-refined diesel engines currently around in the market. It’s not only silent with least vibrations inside out by average diesel engine standards but also eager to be driven hard. Of course, there is a turbo lag and car becomes totally responsive only past 2000 RPM mark but for once, it’s can be disregarded for the fun you get thereafter. Don’t get me wrong, this car by no means is an enthusiast’s toy but that said, the refinement that CRDi provides does certainly make it a breeze to operate.

The turbo-lag zone is masked and you won’t find that noticeable surge. But in slow-moving traffic, you’re often insisted to downshift to remain in power band. Verna CRDi becomes as free as a bird upon getting into the expressway. The power delivery stays consistent until redline and noise levels are pretty controlled too. In this case, having a sixth gear helps: You cruise on 120 Kmph @ 2500 RPM. The 100 Kmph mark is achieved at approx. 2250 RPM and 1750 RPM in 5th and 6th gear respectively. Short-throw gearshift is soft, joy to use (especially during quick maneuvers) and has sorted ratios. First gear redlines at 43 Kmph while 3rd can go as high as 130 Kmph. Clutch pedal is soft but for some strange reason, I actually found it lighter than the one on its 1.6L petrol counterpart! (when driving back to back).

The performance figures might appear good on paper but at the end of the day, the story eventually boils down to driving dynamics. And that’s exactly the only biggest area where Verna has always been a victim of harsh criticism. Popularized as ‘boat-like’ handling, older version’s steering wheel felt disconnected to the road as car picked up the pace. Hyundai has taken that criticism seriously. Apart from the facelift, its chief attention has been to work out on these flaws. As a result, steering and suspension have gone under re-examination. Engineers have made an effort to curb suspension related issue through stiffer dampers and bump stoppers with emboss to offset the thud noise. The improvement can be felt but high speed cornering is something that I’d still avoid doing on this car. Likewise, suspension is settled and tuned for luxurious low speed ride. On faster speeds though, the vertical movement (read bounciness) evidently emerges.

Plethora of safety features have always put the Verna on advantage. This facelift is not an exception. Although disc brakes have been removed but anti-lock braking function with EBD is now standard across all the variants. Six airbags on the top-end SX continue to be available (unlike in Elite i20) while S (O) gets two front airbags and S only driver’s side airbag. In addition, small yet significant features like impact sensing door unlock, clutch lock system and rear parking sensors etc. sweeten the deal. All in all, the recent upgrades have again put the Verna on right path but what Hyundai should be worried is that its core USPs are being eventually taken over by the new competition. This facelift is possibly a stop-gap solution before the next generation Verna arrives which is already in works (Next Gen Verna).

Hyundai Verna 2015: Verdict, Likes, Dislikes and Star Ratings

New-Hyundai-Verna-2015-5.jpg

You'll Love: [thumbsup]
  • More balanced fluidic fascia. Interiors are sophisticated too.
  • Highly refined engines that also deliver decent fuel efficiency.
  • Relatively improved ride and handling (but still not the best though).
  • Proven reliability and a wide-spread Hyundai India’s aftersales network.
  • Plethora of safety features (6 airbags, standard ABS etc) are worth applause.
You'll Loathe: [thumbsdown]
  • Price tag is not the Verna's USP.
  • Gradually losing its charm in sight of fully overhauled rival sedans.
  • Some features like DRLs and rear disc brakes have been quietly eliminated.
  • Automatic version still operates on 4 speed transmission. Needs an upgrade.
  • Light steering makes high-speed handling uneasy. Vertical movement evident in ride at 100+ Kph.

Hyundai Verna 2015: Pictorial Review

Nose, which used to be flat, is now slightly pointed.

4S Verna in Sleek Silver

4S Verna in Stardust

Parked besides elder sibling, Sonata. Notice any resemblance?

New headlamps appear radically upmarket.

Those with eagle eyes would be able to quickly figure out the difference between new and old taillamps.

The wing-shaped front grille

All-new projector headlamps miss the DRLs.

Two strong character lines on the hood are now broadly spaced.

Wipers automatically turn on if the sensors detect any water droplets.

Windscreen washer nozzles are amazingly well-concealed.

Sharp boomerang-styled foglamps.

New diamond-cut alloy wheels are sure shot lookers.

Chrome plated exterior door handles. Passenger side doesn’t receives the request sensor.

These badges are only on driver’s side fender. The only area that visibly differentiates between Petrol and Diesel Verna.

The wide-opening front door.

The rear door also opens reasonably wide. Low roof-sill could be an issue for senior citizens.

Hyundai Verna 2015: Pictorial Review

Hyundai recommends same tyre pressure for both the tyre sizes.

This is where the VIN is located.

Rear window goes down to maximum this limit. Anti-pinch feature equipped on driver’s side.

Don’t get confused with “GLS” sticker on “SX” variant. GLS is the variant code for international identification.

Antenna is now much smaller than the one in old Fluidic Verna

Chrome stripe on boot lip retained. I’d personally prefer not to have it and keep the ‘bling’ to minimum.

465 liters of usable boot space is larger than that of Vento but smaller than Ciaz and City.

No cost-cutting here. Pleasantly surprised to see the insulated boot lid.

Spare wheel is not an alloy.

Observe the lit area..

And now this. Find some similarity?

Unfortunately, Hyundai has bid adieu to the dual exhaust pipes. This single pipe is now tucked under the skin.

Verna logo takes place of “Hyundai” badge which now has been removed; variant and engine markings have been clubbed together.

Lots of room in the engine bay of 1.6 Petrol unit.

Positive terminal is properly covered in Verna. Most automakers normally cut costs by using cheap plastic panels in such areas.

Hyundai-Kia relationship can be seen upon a close look on some panels under the hood.

The automatic version of test car in media drive featured rear discs (although there's no mention of it on the brochure).

Steering wheel is tilt and telescopic adjust.

Four speed automatic transmission demands an upgrade too (5-speed expected in future).

No cruise control though but dead pedal is a great boon.

Supervision instrument cluster in this shade looks divine.

MID view from L-R: Travel time, Eco-drive mode, tripmeter one, tripmeter two, distance-to-empty, average FE, realtime FE, average speed.

Separate button to operate the MID is much more convenient than the traditional pin.

Interior plastics are made up of high quality; close up of dashboard texture.

Engine start-stop button useful but is practically hidden from driver’s sight.

Audio controls on steering wheel come handy.

Keep both stalks to ‘auto’ mode to automatically enable wipers and headlamps whenever needed.

Touchscreen head unit is likely to be offered in near future.

New color contrast (light text on dark background) is more legible under direct sunlight.

All ports clubbed together in a compartment as in Grand i10. Convenient.

There’s no lack of cubbyholes in Hyundais! Verna is no exception.

There’s no compromise on the interiors. All bits are extremely well finished.

Fusebox and OBD port in same place as in Grand i10 and Elite i20 (RHS of dashboard).

Cooled glovebox isn't too deep but serves the purpose.

Slidable front armrest is comfy. Can accommodate a 5” phone and 500ml bottle (not at the same time, of course!)

Passenger side sun visor doesn’t get the cover on vanity mirror.

Reverse parking sensor display shows up on the IRVM. Doesn’t get Elite i20 like steering guide indicator though.

Electrically foldable ORVMs are wide enough. But they don’t auto-fold upon locking the car (as in Grand i10).

Both front seatbelts are height adjustable.

This is what Hyundai the calls 'Ergo' Lever. Pull it from back to slide forward the front seat to increase your legroom.

Side and curtain airbags standard on top-end SX trim.

Here’s what you call high attention to detail: Notice the different engraved pattern on central lock button for blind identification.

All four doors can easily carry large 1 liter bottles.

Front seats are supremely comfortable.

Rear seat is positioned lower than usual but offers adequate underthigh support. Legroom isn’t an issue but headroom could be.

Good provision of interior lighting for dark.

Minimum rear legroom

Maximum rear legroom

Transmission tunnel is remarkably unobtrusive

Premium keyfob borrowed from Elite i20. Tip: Press that tiny button to eject the traditional key.

An attempt to capture high-beam shot inside the tunnel
