The new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 has been unveiled at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. Fitted with a host of chassis, engine and aerodynamic upgrades, the most powerful Ford ever built will rival the Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The GT500’s engine is a hand-built all-aluminium, 5.2-litre supercharged V8 fitted with forged con-rods, a new structural engine sump and a water-to-air intercooler system. Official performance figures are yet to be announced, but Ford claims a power figure in excess of 700bhp, a 0-62mph time of around three seconds and a sub-11 second quarter-mile time.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, VIN 001, Rolls Off Line in Candy Apple Green

  • Ford's first Mustang Shelby GT500 off the line will be displayed in a place of honor during the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction later this month.
  • The car, which bears VIN 001, is painted in Candy Apple Green in homage to the 1968 Shelby GT500 prototype known as the Green Hornet.
  • The Green Hornet and the 2020 car will be displayed together at the auction, January 11–19. The new car has already been purchased by auction company chairman and CEO Craig Jackson for $1.1 million, with the funds going to charity.

Doing good can be even more awesome than usual if you're the scion of a car-auction dynasty. Just ask Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auctions. Jackson took possession of this Candy Apple Green 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 after paying $1.1 million for it at last year's Scottsdale auction, funds that will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Both Shelbys will be on display at Scottsdale during the Barrett-Jackson auction, which runs from January 11 to 19. This auction company has a history of auctioning Mustangs and other Fords for charity: 20 of them over the past 13 years, raising $6.5 million for the JDRF charity.

This Mustang Shelby GT500 Is Tuned to 945 HP and Runs 9s in the Quarter-Mile

With a 760-horsepower 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 under the hood, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 isn't exactly underpowered. It can do the 0-60 sprint in 3.3 seconds, and hit the quarter-mile in 10.6. But for some, those numbers just aren't enough.

Evolution Performance, a shop in Pennsylvania, got its hands on one of the first GT500s to leave the factory, and immediately got to work modifying it for more power. Among the upgrades include a ported supercharger, a new pulley, bigger injectors, a bigger fuel pump, headers, an X-pipe, and a tune for race fuel. There's also drag radials out back, and additional bracing in the chassis to ensure power is transferred to the ground smoothly.

The result is a claimed 945 horsepower to the wheels—an increase of 185 horsepower compared to the stock number at the crank. REVan Evan on YouTube was on the scene at Bradenton Motorsport Park in Florida to film the car running a 9.93-second quarter-mile at 140 mph, making it the first 2020 GT500 to break the 10-second barrier.

If achieving these speeds is possible so soon after the car's launch, we're excited to see how the tuner scene for the GT500 will look one or two years down the line.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500SE Has 800+ HP, Only 100 Will Be Built

2020-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500se-201-1596466379.jpg

  • Shelby American has unveiled its upgraded 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Signature Edition, and only 100 will be built.
  • The supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 produces more than 800 horsepower thanks to a smaller supercharger pulley and upgraded cooling.
  • The upgrades cost an additional $29,995 on top of the GT500's $71,495 starting price.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the most powerful production Ford to date, but for some power-hungry crazies, 760 horsepower might not be enough. Good thing Shelby American exists, because it's building 100 upgraded GT500s with more than 800 horsepower. Disclaimer: we certainly didn't ask for this, but we're all for it.

To squeeze an additional 40-plus horsepower from the GT500's supercharged 5.2-liter V-8, Shelby American equipped a smaller supercharger pulley and an uprated heat exchanger and intercooler, and it runs on 93-octane pump gas. During Car and Driver testing, a stock 2020 GT500 launched to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds on its way to a 11.4-second quarter-mile at 132 mph, making it one of the quickest muscle cars we've ever tested.

The GT500SE sits a bit lower than the standard car, with new front and rear springs and anti-roll bars. Stronger axle shafts are equipped to handle the additional power. Adding to the GT500's already menacing look is a new vented carbon-fiber hood that's 30 pounds lighter than the original. A Shelby widebody kit and carbon-fiber package are both available. The car sits on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, though sticky Cup 2 tires are optional.

Inside, the seats have been recovered with Carroll Shelby's signature stitched into the seatbacks. Remember, only 100 of these 800-plus-hp Mustangs will be built for each model year, and to make sure you know which one you have, Shelby includes both engine and dashboard plaques with the car's serial number.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Signature Edition starts at $101,490—Shelby charges $29,995 for the upgrades—and is available to order now. Each sale will benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation for children and grants membership to the Team Shelby club.
