2020 Ford Transit EV teaser.jpg

The new, battery-electric (BEV) Ford Transit has been teased for the first time, with the van set to go on sale in Europe late in 2021.

Ford has confirmed that the electric Transit will be offered in cargo van, cutaway and chassis cab body styles, with three roof heights and body lengths offered. Ford is also promising “uncompromised cargo capability”, suggesting that the vehicle’s battery will not have an impact on rear load space.

No performance details have been confirmed at this stage. The plug-in hybrid version of the Transit features a 13.6kWh battery that affords up to 35 miles of zero-emissions range, so an electric model will far exceed those figures.

Range will remain modest, however, with the van aimed at ‘last mile’ delivery businesses in urban environments. The electric Transit will be a rival for the new Mercedes eSprinter, which uses a 55kWh battery in top-spec form, which allows a real-world range of 93 miles on a single charge.

New all-electric Ford E-Transit van revealed

New Ford E-Transit van 2020-11.jpg

The all-electric Ford E-Transit has been revealed, and the firm's largest commercial vehicle promises the longest range of any electric van so far, with a claimed WLTP maximum range of 217 miles courtesy of a 67kWh battery and an electric drivetrain that's fitted in a current Transit’s body.

From the outside, the E-Transit is marked out by a new grille with blue bars, a charging socket in the nose, and E-Transit badging. Under the bonnet there's a 265bhp electric motor, which means the E-Transit will be the most powerful electric van for sale in the UK. That motor drives the rear wheels, while 430Nm of torque means it has the power to cope with large payloads.

Ford will offer 25 configurations of E-Transit, with the panel van available in a number of lengths and roof heights, while double cab in-van, and chassis cab variants will also be offered. Ford is aiming for a maximum payload of 1,616kg for the E-Transit panel van, with the chassis cab versions offering up to 1,967kg. Since the battery is mounted under the body, the E-Transit has the same cargo volumes as the diesel Transit, with up to 15.1 cubic metres of space for the panel van.

That 67kWh battery is fitted with an 11.3kW on-board charger, so a full charge is possible in just over 8 hours from a suitable source. Using a 115kW DC charger, the E-Transit can be topped up from 15 to 80 per cent capacity in around 34 minutes. In addition, and in a first for the van market, Ford will offer an option called Pro Power Onboard, which provides a 2.3kW outlet for powering tools and equipment using the battery.

Inside, the E-Transit introduces Sync4 infotainment to Ford's commercial vehicles. Here it features a 12-inch touchscreen as standard, with over-the-air updates, enhanced voice control and sat-nav live traffic information all on offer. Available safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition with intelligent speed assist, plus blind-spot recognition, lane assist, adaptive cruise control and 360-degree cameras. A standard-fit FordPass Connect modem also allows fleet operators to monitor the E-Transit remotely.

The new Ford E-Transit will undergo fleet trials through 2021 in various European markets, before going on sale in spring 2022.

New 2022 Ford E-Transit Custom all-electric van revealed

Ford E-Transit Custom.jpg

The new Ford E-Transit Custom medium-sized electric van has been revealed. It comes hot on the heels of the launch of the full-sized E-Transit, and marks the second of four electric vans to be revealed by Ford Pro, the company's newly-formed commercial vehicle division, by 2024.

Ford E-Transit Custom-3.jpg
The Ford E-Transit Custom slots into the one-tonne van segment and will rival the likes of the Citroen e-Dispatch, Vauxhall Vivaro-e and their Peugeot, Toyota and Fiat equivalents. However, while Ford has yet to confirm battery specifications, it's aiming for the E-Transit Custom to have a range of around 240 miles, 40 miles more than the best offered by the Stellantis group models.

Ford E-Transit Custom-4.jpg

On the outside, the E-Transit Custom has an evolutionary look that's similar to the current Transit Custom. There's a large honeycomb grille, but this has been smoothed off to boost aerodynamics and is flanked by slender LED headlights. Overall the van is less than two-metres tall to boost aerodynamics, so it has a sportier profile than the current van. However, Ford is aiming to maintain payload weights in excess of one tonne, while full towing capability is expected to feature, too.

The E-Transit Custom will share its running gear with the recently-launched E-Transit. The charging flap is located in the front bumper - similar to the configuration used by the Transit Custom PHEV - while the E-Transit's Pro Power three-pin plug socket will be offered in the cargo area, allowing users to run high-power tools and other items off the van's main battery.

As with the E-Transit, the Custom will feature Ford Pro telematics and 'always-on' connectivity. This will allow fleet users and businesses to monitor their vans in real-time, helping to maintain fleet health and keep vehicles off the road for as short a time as possible.

Speaking at the E-Transit Custom's reveal, Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe, explained: “This is a watershed moment for commercial vehicle operators in Europe, and another hugely significant realisation of our Ford Pro ambitions. Europe’s best-selling van just went all-electric and – supported by our unique Ford Pro one-stop-shop of productivity-boosting services – the operating benefits this will bring to business across Europe cannot be overstated.”

Ford Pro is aiming for 600,000 EV sales by 2026, with the fleet becoming fully electric by 2035. More details on the E-Transit Custom will be revealed in September, with production expected to start at Ford's plant in Turkey in the second half of 2023.
