Alfa Romeo has revealed a new hardcore, track-honed version of the Giulia, which heralds the re-introduction of the GTA badge into the Italian firm’s line-up and is a car created to celebrate Alfa’s 110th anniversary.

The Giulia GTA is a new flagship model based on the Giulia Quadrifoglio. It boasts more power, sheds weight and introduces eye-catching new aerodynamic components compared with its road-biased sibling.

There are two versions of the newcomer too. Alongside the GTA is an even harder variant called the GTAm, which features two racing seats, and a rollcage where the rear bench would otherwise be.

It retains the Quadrifoglio’s engine - a 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6. But power swells from 503bhp to 533bhp, and there’s a new exhaust system from specialist Akrapovic intended to add extra bark to the extra power.

Allied to this is a crash diet. Carbon fibre is used for the driveshafts, bonnet, roof, front bumper, front wheelarches and rear wheelarch interiors. The engine uses more aluminium, as do the doors and the suspension components. In the GTAm, these changes - allied to the rear seat removal and the inclusion of carbon-fibre sports seats, result in a weight reduction of 100kg over the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Both cars use Alcantara extensively in the cabin.

The streamlined and updated 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia line-up has gone on sale in Australia, offering buyers a new entrypoint into the range, plus fresh standard safety features and price reductions on some variants.

The 2020 Giulia line-up has been trimmed from four to three variants, with a new base grade – the Giulia Sport – replacing both the previous entry-level Giulia variant and the mid-spec Super variant.

The Giulia Sport is priced from $63,950 before on road-costs, making it $3050 more expensive than the previous entry point into the range – but adding what Alfa claims is 10 per cent more value on top of the outgoing trim grade.
