DIY Gear oil change Honda activa125

After waiting for 3 days I decided today to change the gear oil for my scooter. It was not changed ever, since I bought it in 2016.Although it had become black,it appeared to be usable, meaning there was still some life left in it.
Thanks @ CRACING for reminding me to do it. Mate, you created the tension that day, with your post and pics, and it pushed me to do it earlier than planned. Once again Thanks a lot.

Now the pics.

I used 90 grade gear oil left over from my swift gear oil change. It is far more thicker than engine oil.It matches the thickness of used gear oil which came out of the scooter.

Hello Friends,

Finally my car gets new engine oil and I felt smoothness right after driving. [:D]

I got the Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 yesterday (Amazon had stock in Bangalore so reached me quick). Today I thought to change the oil and drain bolt was easy to reach but the bolt was so tight that I couldn't twist a bit and I don't have breaker bar nor there is much space. May be ASC used impact wrench to tight it or due to heat it has seized. So I left it as is and went to nearby mall.

My brother saw new Bosch service center and forced me to ask them whether they change engine oil (Of course they will) and pricing. They seemed good, friendly and quoted Rs. 350. After an hour, I returned with new oil and filter. Without any delays, they started the work. First they jacked up the car and tried to remove the drain bolt but damn, after struggling for half an hour with many different tools they also couldn't remove it![frustration]

The garage had many non-repairable vehicles (Shop owner was angry because car owners were not taking the car out) and one GM Captiva was standing on repair pit. Shop owner called for several workers and pushed the SUV aside to make space for my car. The repair pit has lots of space and the drain bolt came out easily. The filter was also tight fit, they had several filter wrenches and also mine didn't help so they had to puncture it to remove. Fortunately drain bolt and washer was good. They have gently tightened the drain bolt and new oil filter. Hope they can be removed easily next time.

Next poured the new oil while checking the level on dipstick and approx 3.8l of oil went inside the engine block. However, when I returned home and checked dipstick again, the oil was slightly above the upper mark. I was not ok with it, so in the evening I went to medical shop and bought infusion set and syringe. Inserted the tube via dipstick pipe, pulled the oil using 5ml syringe and holding roller clamp inbetween so the oil doesn't return to sump. After removing 50ml of oil, it is now upto upper mark.

Thats it. This DIY was difficult then expected and really needed repair pit. Lets see what happens next time. [:)]

Maybe, perhaps if they had used this, it would have made their job easier. Certainly works for me in difficult scenarios.Never needed to puncture one.

Yeah but they didn't had such tool. Only swivel type and plier type wrenches. Since they had struggled with drain bolt, they didn't spend much time with removing filter. It also took several punctures to twist.

Meanwhile, I will buy different filter removing tools to help me or others next time. [:)]

Thanks...
Best Regards

please try to supervise the refitting of the filter and the drain bolt .It does not need to be tightened to maximum human ability [;)]
Ideally torque wrench should be used. But ,to be honest I have NEVER EVER have seen it being used, to tighten oil filters,in any ASS all my life!!.

Recently I added Foot pump in my tool collection. It came in handy last night when my Honda Activa got punctured again.
It makes my job of filling air much easier. Its getting punctured regularly. This time there were 2 nails.Thankfully the smaller one was only affecting the tread, and not the main Tyre wall.

Some pics of my DIY.

Today I wanted to share pictures of my feeler gauge set.Its a very useful tool for setting the tappets,as well as spark plug gaps.
This is one of the most used tool in my tool set when I am dealing with spark plugs.
Some of the blades are so fine, that they bend merely by touching. Have to take care not to ruin it.

However, I didn't know my scooter uses separate gear oil (my previous LML scooter didn't) and I was running with bad oil since several years. [frustration] Vehicle manual and gear box says quality required that is 0.12l but no mention about grade. Honda ASC said, engine oil or gear oil can be used but they didn't have fluids in small packs as they use large qualities for servicing. Upon researching on Internet found that some use gear oil and some use remaining engine oil for gear box. I went to nearest automobile shops and they said engine oil can be used for gear box but gear oil is highly recommended. However, all the shops and fuel stations had minimum 1ltr packing. Its more then required but may be it will be useful for other things like chains, gears, hinges and etc. Also I can change gear oil of my scooter often and my friends scooter's. Cost for GS Caltex 80w90 gear oil is Rs. 250/-
Yamaha got gear oil in 100 ml (sewing machine oil can type) bottles.
