Hi friends,

My name is Sanjay a newbie to this world TAI'ans, Please bare with me , if i do something silly!. The passion for the Cars started in me since my childhood, i have had collected many models of the cars (like a tik tik remote controlled Ferrari, Mercedes, Josh machine! ). I always wanted a car for my family, When ever we used to travel 3 people on a discover bike and look at the people driving the car and feel how lucky they were to own a car. We decided to buy a car and went in search of a 5 seater car sometime around mid of 2008. Used Ford escort LPG was the First car we looked, but it was badly maintained and had all the dents on this world on its body! And was quoting 75K for it. Second was the 800 - type 2 92 model it too was in pathetic condition 60 K.

Third was a 2001 santro was quoting 1.25Laks we left this then &there after hearing the quote considering the cars condition. And the fourth one was my car A White 96 model 800 Dr Lady Driven Car had sparely (till 99 only then she had bought an esteem and this 800 was stand still in a neatly packed garage) used it believe it or not it had 20k on the Odo yes 20K!. had quoted 55k but we settled it for 52k. all i did on the day(14 DEC 08 co incidentally that day was 25th anniversary of maruti 800's ) i purchased the car was Sun film, Center console, black sticker to all door pillars (like swifts).

positives of the car

  • The Engine was as good as new

  • Exterior and interior was neat
  • Though it was a lady driven it dint had a dent on the car[evil]
  • All were MGP parts (including the indicator flasher which i got to know 5 days back 96 feb manufactured!)
  • Floor mat was new (though did last only for 3 years)

Cons

  • A/c Had leakage (which i got to know 3-4 months back while trying to fill it!)
  • The A/c vents (center) Was Glued!![lol]
  • The tires lasted only for 6k kms (spare was unused though)

First Service 24/12/08
  • routine service(engine & gearbox oil, oil filter.)

  • Cb point set had gone as per mechanic thats where i went wrong! replaced with a lucas tvs
Had the first trouble of the car after giving it a service in JC road mechanic[frustration] While doing ice! i still do not know how he damaged the whole carburetor! (it used to jerk and misfire and all the things which could possibly go wrong with a carb!)
Below is the pic of my car

Re: My Maruti 800 Type - 2

Hi sunjay nagaraj, welcome to TAI. Happy to see another 800 here.

Your car looks neat, well maintained.
Your car is type 1, not type 2. For the the idling issue, may be the idler switch wire has been disconnected, it will be located behind carburetor.

Re: My Maruti 800 Type - 2

Sorry [frustration] i considered SS80 as type 1!!!
That problem has been resolved (within a month after purchasing the car) by installing new carb (Lucas) as per my trustworthy mechanic said it was physically damaged. thanks for your reply [:)]

Ah! The good old 800.
They were of far higher quality than the later localised versions of the 800..
Totally it is a blast to drive, background pics are great which place was that is it near bidadi??

Heartiest welcome to The Automotive India. This is one of the most honest and straight from the heart write-ups from a true Maruti 800 fan. Your car certainly looks maintained considering its 16 Years old. However, it was surprising to find that the tyres lasted for just 26,000 Kms. Please keep us updated and do upload more images.

Thanks manjoo, And yes its lot more sturdy built unlike the localized versions of the 800. And i think the engine is far more better quality than the mpfi engines. and the pictures are not near bidadi, it was taken on numerous occasions (1&3 pics are taken @ a place called HOLEBAAGILU on the way to SIGANDOOR which is on about 380 km from bangalore) 2 pic was taken on the same route in between arasikere and shimoga.

yes nice pics and background
this good old 800 will definitely have a tougher posture than most of the ones coming out today
Thank you threeacee yes it posses fine build quality in each and every inch of the car.

Thanks 350Z The Tires started to have cracks after 1000km or so after i had purchased the car. and the mistake i did was to choose china made tire (on advise of a local taxi driver LING-LONG) [frustration] it has made the car lot more bouncier and does not allow the car to pass 100-110kmph(even the engine is ready to be revved but the tires sends a nerve cracking vibration to the steering). will change the tires asap once i get the alloys.

First stage of accessories and modifications(23-dec-08 @SUPER CARZ JC Road)
  • Head unit PIONEER DEH - 3050UB ( USB, Aux-in, 4 channel pre-out )
PRO- one of the neat player i have seen till date. nice sound reproduction, you wont feel a beat missing. and the best part was it had 4 pre-out, which helped me to add 4channel amplifier. CON- the FM catching ability is as poor as you could imagine.
  • JBL GTO-938 350 watts (rear speakers)
  • Wooden parcel tray to mount speakers (i made a mistake opting this[frustration] now i have shifted to box)
  • 40% sun-film
  • Garnish kit (neck rest, Steering cover, Gear knob, handbrake cover, seat belt strap)
  • a spear key (as we tend to loose every key[:)])
  • wheel alignment and balancing
  • Regular service

The ICE and accessories cost me 8.8K. do not remember how much i paid for the mechanical works.

second stage of accessories and modifications(27-sept-09 @ dont remember the shop name but it was in Basaveshwara nagar SUPER CARZ was closed on account of last Sunday rules)
  • Central Locking systems XENOS FAILSAFE 180-4A
Had a dilemma to choose between this xenos and a kidney bean shaped autocop. Eventually went with this as it had more metal like appeal the plastic autocop. PRO- the chirping sound is nice(have disconnected it since it gave out false alarm), The response and range is quite good. the remote works even when the car is running. CONS- Gives out false alarms. the manual locking bit is quite lag
  • Front Speakers JVC CS-V416 100 watts
  • changed the horns BOSH Windtone 300
  • 60% sun-film
  • Reverse Gear Sound
  • HUB CAPS

Total cost 5.5K. Will be back with level 3 & 4 soon [:)]
Thanks,

i have this on my nano. old HU but still a VFM one. FM problem i think its due to antenna in your car. mine is OK. AUX port on the rear is a negative

BTW you missed the details about the AMP and SUB woofer.

i will tell you a trick in this, when you press SRC to switch off the HU. press the volume roller. you will get clock setting. scroll through next settings. you will find rear speaker:full. change this to sub. your rear 6x9 will act as subs . do set high pass filter to 100Hz and turn on the sub in HU audio settings.
sub settings 1 --> normal
sub settings 2 --> 100hz and -2

Short, neat & honest review, really liked the write up. Post some pictures of your interiors & close up of exteriors too (including ICE, tyres etc) Have you added extra leaf in the rear suspension? I guess your car will have SGP(Suzuki Genuine Parts) which are costlier & better than MGP ones. My car distributor is a SGP one & is still rocking well.

I personally feel Type1 800 looks good with the NEO Velocity alloys, so incase you plan to upgrade your wheels, have a look at these. Getting them might be an issue as 12" wheels are slowly dropping in the market.

Ignore the price mentioned there (its not that costly [:)])

Third stage of accessories and modifications @SUPER CARZ
  • Got new black art leather Seat covers
  • Refurbished my old seat metal parts, Replaced rotate to recline mechanism to pull recline mechanism, adding foam to seats
  • Added headrests to the rear seats
Now we dont crave anymore for the front seats, except for driving though [lol]
  • installed PVC floor carpet
Highly recommended cause the furry kind of oem carpet stinks when it comes to contact with water
  • Got the spoilers (just grey primed)
(it was ugly looking as it dint had paint, will install them once i paint the car)
  • Changed wooden parcel tray to speaker boxes

The total cost involved was around 7.5k

Fourth stage of accessories and modifications @SUPER CARZ
  • Amplifier - 4 channel JBL GT-X646 .
Though the voice clarity is super at 25 or less volume, it starts to sound rubbish at high notes. Hope saishibu can help me in this.
  • Sub Woofer JBL CS-1215 (1100 WATTS 12").
  • AMP wiring kit - BOSE (a local one not ORIGINAL BOSE!).
The Guy Told me that this is the best brand in my price range!.
  • Sub Woofer Enclosure - Have chosen BENZ TYPE (as told by the installer) box.
Smaller than the conventional enclosure, With BASS REFLEX.
It Gives much better thump than the conventional enclosure in my cousins car, & it saves you more BOOT SPACE 250rs costlier

The total cost involved was around 6.2K As the sub woofer was given as a GIFT [:)] by my cousin! Other wise add 2.2~K extra.

some more pics of my car [:)]

What a coincidence!. I am running on the same settings since 2010 :)
Thanks for your tip though.[:)]

Thanks for your reply, Yes i have added an extra leaf (i used to refer to it as BLADE before this post!). Yes all are SGP, except Distributor & carburetor (Both MGP), because an Idiot mechanic spoiled both[anger]. Will consider The alloys. Thanks for your compliments :)

i dont have an amp or a sub in my nano. mostly i will be driving single or other person in front, so the rear 6x9 is enough as sub.
i too have distortion at 25+. so i will turn off sound retriever settings or reduce source level settings
