As many as 50 Indian double-decker buses will soon run on the streets of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, and in Chittagong city, a media report said on Monday.

The buses were manufactured in Mumbai and sent to Bangladesh by road. The new buses arrived in Dhaka over the last couple of months and The Daily Star reported that these could have been on the roads much earlier had there been no dilemma over who would inaugurate the buses.

The initial effort was to get these inaugurated by visiting Indian Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, but the plan had to be scrapped after failing to get a spot in his schedule.

Later, Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s presence was sought and the nod was received for Tuesday morning, according to officials from the ministry of communications.

Two buses will be taken to the prime minister’s office for the inaugural ceremony. All the 50 buses are to be engaged on different routes in Dhaka and in Chittagong.

Ashok Leyland of India will be manufacturing the buses. The double-deckers were purchased under a $24-million project to have a total of 290 buses in a bid to ease the transport crisis in Bangladesh’s capital and in other parts of the country.

Good to see AL getting aggressive on the export front.[clap]
