White the most preferred car colour in India in 2018

White also rules in the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the report said with 41 per cent new buyers going for the colour. NEW DELHI: When it comes to car colours, white is the most-preferred choice for many Indian consumers with 43 per cent of them opting for the tone in 2018, according to a report by global paints major BASF. According to the 'BASF Color Report for Automotive OEM Coatings' by BASF's Coatings Division, the other two most popular car colours last year were grey and silver with each finding preferences of 15 per cent of buyers.

Red with 9 per cent was the other popular colour, followed by blue at 7 per cent, while black had just 3 per cent buyers.

"Small cars which are pearl white in colour are popular among Indian consumers. Customers in the warm climate of India may prefer white because white cars do not heat up so quickly," BASF Head of Design (Asia-Pacific) Chiharu Matsuhara said.

She further said: "Another reason might be the luxurious image of this colour, as suggested by our trend observations."

White also rules in the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the report said with 41 per cent new buyers going for the colour, followed by grey 15 per cent, silver 14 per cent, red 12 per cent and blue 7 per cent.

In the entry-level sub-compact segment, 42 per cent of buyers went for white colour, 17 per cent with grey and 16 per cent for silver. Red was the other popular colour in the segment with 12 per cent.

In the basic compact segment, white was also the most popular colour with 35 per cent of buyers opting for it, followed by grey and silver with 17 per cent each, red 9 per cent and blue 8 per cent, among other colours.

In the compact (premium) segment also, the BASF colour report said white was the most-popular colour with 46 per cent of consumers going for it, followed by silver at 21 per cent and grey at 17 per cent. Interestingly, only 1 per cent preferred black colour.

However, in the mid-sized segment, black was the second-most popular colour with 18 per cent behind white which had preference of 40 per cent buyers.

The other popular colours in the segment were blue at 16 per cent and silver at 13 per cent and brown 5 per cent, among others.

According to auto industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, passenger vehicle sales in the country stood at 33,94,756 units in 2018 as against 32,30,614 units in 2017, up 5.08 per cent.

i consider "Silver, White, Navy Blue and Black as EVER GREEN Car colors"; one rarely gets tired of seeing these colors, after years of ownership.

With so many of them on roads, White car can "easily get lost in the crowd", if an average road-rage induced Hulk is chasing it [lol] . Red and Yellow colors are actually BEACONS to anyone looking for them in Traffic.

Contrary to popular (okay okay, once upon a time popular) belief that Dark Colors hide dust, they DO NOT; more the Sunlight, more dust & details revealed.

All said and done, "Navy Blue" is de MOST Royal-est Color for Cars, IMHO. Had Hyundai offered Navy Blue in late 2012, i would have taken it. Vento had that Color option then, and till date I am JEALOUS of ALL YO Navy Blue Vento Guys... Grrrrrrrrr.... Gelusil gelusil...

According to this 2007 study of crashes done between 1987 and 2004 in Victoria and Western Australia (link), Black color cars had 12 % higher crash risk than White Color Cars.
- Grey at 11% higher crash risk than White
- Silver at 10% higher crash risk than White
- Blue & Red at 7 % higher crash risk than White.

I am really REALLY surprised to know that "Blue & Red" colors had lesses crashes than "Silver and Grey" [think] . And i bought a Silver Color Matiz in 2000, thinking that it was one of the Safer Color [frustration]

May be latest data will reveal much better statistics and probabilities. The Fact that many Indians prefer White Color, might suggest that Indians do have SAFETY in mind, inspite of buying Alto, Swift & Dzire dubbas from Maruti. THAT is a good news[clap]

Knowing the link between "Colors and Crash Risk" might help one and all. Good Luck to all.

Wow,
This is some amazing stats shared by @vikyjoshi @vijay_968
Black is my Favourite color, but scared by the crash risk stats though.
Didnt know that Black was the least popular color in all the segments.
The popularity of White colors as shown in the stats, may also be due to the higher production and easily available of the shelf at showrooms.

Another article on favourite car colours - this time it is a comparison between India, UK & North America

Read:
I liked this in that article [evil] ... "The first non neutral colour to appear is red – so once the conservative buyers pick the conservative favourite colours, the rebels take over! We call them rebels because psychologists have in the past tried to understand the personality profiles of car buyers based on their colour choices, and red has clearly been the choice of the relatively more dynamic, outgoing buyer".

Me: Everyone likes a rebel (ar least secretly) [;)]

About your post #4 :
IMO, Hatchbacks, with their short bonnets and 'zero trunks' look grossly out of place in "Black Color" - scoring a max of 35/100.
Premium Hatchbacks, Compact Sedans & Compact SUVs touching 4m length feel adequate in Black - still not more than 70/100
Black looks ideal on Proper SUVs & Sedans. Score is 70 to 90 out of 100. But, black gives some mean look to certain SUVs.

However, Black looks like "made for a vehicle longer than 4.5m". CLASSY [angel]

Another article about colour preference:

4/10 cars in India are white in colour, compared to 8/10 cars globally

According to the firm's "Colour Report for Automotive OEM Coatings”, 43 per cent of the cars produced in India in 2018 were white in colour. Grey and Silver were the other two shades among the top 3 most preferred colours by Indian car buyers with a 15 per cent share each. Red held the first spot among the chromatic hues with 9 per cent popularity.
