In latest update, the modified hatchback was recently confiscated and stripped to stock after the State Transport Commissioner received a complaint regarding the vehicle. As reported by Malayala Manorama Newspaper, the modified car was confiscated and a show cause notice was sent to the owner. It was then stripped to stock and produced in front of the authorities. Authorities will levy respective fines after examining the vehicle.

Here this article writes about a different angle to this story

Hats off to Kerala RTO authorities.

Modded Maruti Baleno fraudulently sold as Mercedes A Class – Cops & RTO undo damage (Update)
Pearl DanielsBy Pearl Daniels on December 8, 2017
A Maruti Baleno car was modified to look like a Mercedes A Class. This car was in the news for the fact that the owner had modified the car to make it look like a Mercedes A Class. As part of the modification, the owner had replaced the original bumpers and alloys.

The bumpers of the said Maruti Baleno had been taken apart and replaced with new one’s. The front bumper was fitted with a Mercedes Diamond grille to make it look like an A-Class which also sports air vents in the form of a figure ‘8’. It is this new bumper design that Mercedes is using on all their current generation models.

Modifications on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno also extend to company logo in front which is not altogether attractive while it being a lower end Baleno is also devoid of projector headlamps and LEDs. At the rear, the owner has put in a new sporty bumper with quad exhaust tips and rear diffuser offering a sportier appeal to the vehicle.

Wheels and tyres also get upgraded with 16”, five spoke alloy wheels with low profile tyres while cabin too has been modified to resemble a Mercedes A-Class though it does not really suit the car and it’s a far cry away from the real luxury Mercedes A-Class.

Yesterday, a report went viral stating that the RTO and Police had confiscated this car and dismantled it, because it was modified. But, that is not the true story. A new video sheds more light to what the matter is. Contrary to what was errounously reported earlier, the matter in fact is as follows. The now unmodded Maruti Suzuki Baleno was purchased on EMI by the 1st party (owner). It was then sold to his friend without changing the name in RC book. The undocumented second owner/friend then proceeded to change the appearance of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno to a Mercedes A Class, and proceeded to sell the car to a 3rd party.

Quite naturally, upon becoming aware of the situation, the original owner/first party went on to file a case with RTO. The police were in fact responding to the case filed and not targeting modded cars as was earlier reported.

@Ticken, thanks for the informative share buddy! I feel both the 1st & 2nd party are at fault here reason being why the 1st owner did not change the ownership on RC and why did the "friend" knowing all this took to selling it after mods? I feel there is some angle of design infringement too in this case but most importantly, the 2nd seller made the deal more shady by not providing correct documents to 3rd buyer.

Exactly. Modifications are ok but there should be a line that should differentiate it from going too far.

The Merc-Baleno was NOT confiscated for illegal modifications- Here is the real STORY.

The biggest takeaway from this whole episode is that, as a buyer of an used car, it’s very important for you to do your due diligence about the car’s ancestry, which also includes ownership checks. You also need to make sure that there’s no legal case against the car you’re buying.

re: "Modified Cars Get Impounded by Kerala RTO"

With whatever modifications done on the Baleno, even in the dark, i could identify it to be fake, no way to confuse it for the Real A Class, God knows what was the buyer thinking. A basic knowledge on cars is very important these days.
On a different note, i recently came across a incident in a Maruti Suzuki dealership where a to-be delivered Dzire was kept ready for delivery but the to-be owner quarreling with the Dealership guys. I went and asked some other guy and to my surprise, the quarrel was about why his Dzire ZXI does not have a touchscreen and reverse camera. Cause the car he was shown in the showroom had them. Well because that was the ZXI+. Big bummer [frustration]

Case 2: Modified Mitsubishi Lancer impounded in Kerala by RTO for looking like a "Ferrari"

Modified-Lancer-Seized-In-Kerala-Feature-Image-1-700x380.jpg

The modified Mitsubishi Lancer features aftermarket front bumper, rear bumper with air diffuser, modified hood with a vent, and a rear spoiler. It also seems to have an aftermarket exhaust pipe. The vehicle’s owner has been given 15 days to convert the vehicle back into stock condition or face penalty and cancellation of registration.

Authorities have started investigations to crackdown on garages who modify vehicles without any approval from the RTO. They have also intensified search for such modified vehicles in the state.

The MVD has now started going the extra mile to nab the illegal vehicles and recently, the officials went to an auto show at a local college for a surprise check and booked several vehicles for being modified. The special drive happened in Kochi where the MVD registered 10 two-wheelers at various college campused in the district. The vehicles were displayed as a part of an auto show and were not on the road when the MVD officials booked them.
