Mini Australia has joined the long list of manufacturers releasing blacked-out editions of popular models, adding two limited-run 'Nightfall Edition' variants to its local range.

The Mini Nightfall Edition three-door hatch and convertible are based on the John Cooper Works (JCW) three-door hatch and convertible, but with an all-black aesthetic makeover both inside and out.

Pricing for the Nightfall Edition hatch will kick off from $64,155 before on-road costs or $70,990 driveaway, while the convertible will start at $68,155 before on-road costs or $75,290 driveaway.

That marks an increase of $13,255 (before on-road costs) on top of the base recommended list price for the regular JCW three-door hatch, or $9755 on top of the regular JCW convertible price.

Under the bonnet, the new releases receive the same powertrain found in regular JCW variants – a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine boasting up to 170kW and 320Nm and sending power to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

However, the Nightfall tweaks see both cars "doused in darkness", from their Enigmatic Black Metallic exterior paint, to their piano black headlight covers, door handles and waistline finishes and the 17-inch Track spoke wheels in a black finish.

Other aesthetic exterior tweaks include a special blacked-out Mini logo and edition-specific badging.

Inside, both models receive carbon-black leather and Dinamica sports seats, a JCW steering wheel finished in Alcantara trim, a carbon fibre handbrake and piano black interior accents throughout.

On top of the dark accents, the Night Editions also receive a number of additional JCW parts not normally found on the standard JCW models.

These include a sports brake system, a carbon-fibre bonnet scoop and special JCW tailpipe finishers.

Mini is taking the 'limited' part of 'limited edition' to heart, offering only 40 hatches and just 10 convertibles, all of them only available for order via Mini's online ordering platform for a $500 deposit.
