New Delhi, March 19: MG Motor India today announced its aggressive business plans for the Indian market. With the upgradation of its Halol plant – including the construction of a new press shop and the modification of assembly lines and other facilities – progressing at a fast pace, MG Motor India has also initiated talks with various suppliers to achieve high levels of localisation.

MG Motor India has also started inviting dealer prospects for its Dealer Road Shows scheduled to be conducted in Mumbai on 28th March, in Delhi on 6th April, and in Bengaluru on 16th April. The company is looking at partners who possess a hunger for growth and have the capability to deliver a differentiated service commitment that surpasses the industry standard and sets new benchmarks.

As part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the carmaker has also announced that its first vehicle in India will be launched ahead of schedule in the second quarter of 2019. Going forward, the company plans to introduce one new product to the Indian market every year. Led by strong R&D efforts of its parent company SAIC, MG Motor India is also actively considering offering new energy vehicles and is keenly looking to work with all stakeholders involved to implement the technology commercially.

Commenting on the company’s plans for the market, Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director, MG Motor India, said, “The MG brand seeks to embrace the incredible technology of the future while cherishing its great British heritage. We are moving forward swiftly on our India strategy and building a strong organization to embrace the future. Our aim is to provide vehicles that will be new-age and very contemporary, with a premium image and great value.”

MG Motor India is looking to build a future-ready organization that sets the industry benchmarks not only in terms of a young & smart work culture, but also in terms of diversity; female employees already account for 22 percent of the company’s total workforce. “We aim to increase the number of female hires in the near future. This will make a difference and put them in the driver’s seat in the company, thus breaking the monotony in this industry,” Chaba said.

The event was aimed at selecting the right partners from the southern region of India for its retail operations beginning here next year.

The carmaker received nearly 600 registrations from prospective dealers on its website from Southern markets alone forming nearly one-fourth of the overall 2,400 registrations received since it officially invited dealer partners to register last month.

MG Motor India is betting big on Southern markets especially Bengaluru region in terms of initial sales, seeing its potential to be among the top 3 markets in the first phase.

The company, which aims to operate nearly 100 touch points across the country in the initial phase with the commencement of sales during Q2 next year, said a good number of touchpoints will come up in Bengaluru region alone. Overall, it aims to operate over 300 touchpoints across the country in the next few years.

We are strongly focused on well-developed southern markets since this region has proven to have early adopters who are open to trying out new global products. We are confident that winning over the discerning consumers in this region will augur well for us in the initial phase and will give the impetus to drive nationwide sales. Overall, we expect 35-40% of our sales to come from southern India in the initial phase of our nationwide operations,” said Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director, MG Motor India.

MG Motor India is also committed to offer a digital buying and ownership experience to the tech-savvy consumers in Bengaluru and other markets. The carmaker aims to provide technology-driven services for a superior customer experience that exceed expectations of discerning customers.

As part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, MG Motor India recently announced that its first vehicle will be launched in Q2 2019, followed by the introduction of one new product to the Indian market every subsequent year. The company aims to launch vehicles that are new-age, contemporary and also offer great value to buyers.

With the rebuilding of its Halol plant progressing at a fast pace, including the construction of a new press shop, the company is in the process of concluding contracts with various suppliers to achieve high levels of localisation in its vehicles.

Led by strong R&D efforts of its parent company SAIC, the carmaker is also actively considering offering new energy vehicles and is keenly looking to work with all stakeholders involved to implement the technology commercially. MG Motor India also shared plans to test electric vehicles under different climatic conditions in India and said that it would strongly consider Karnataka as one of its first options to launch EVS when decided, given the state’s first-mover advantage in EV policy.

MG Motor India is also looking to build a future-ready organization that sets the industry benchmarks not only in terms of a young & smart work culture, but also in terms of diversity; female employees already account for 24 percent of the company’s total workforce and it plans to further increase the number of women hires in the future.

Morris Garages Since 1924.jpg

Vadodara: MG Motor India, which is all set to roll-out its vehicles from its Halol Car Manufacturing plant in the first half of next year, today announced that it will conduct an Innovation Challenge (Hackathon) at Navrachna University on 23rd May, 2018. Students from Vadodara and nearby areas are invited to participate in the Hackathon by visiting innovation.mgmotor.co.in and submitting their request by Monday, 21st May, 2018.

Based on the theme: “How to make automobiles and transportation services safer and greener,” the hackathon will provide an opportunity for students to enhance their problem-solving skills in the automotive space and earn a chance to intern or work at MG Motor India’s facility in Halol in the future.

Further reinforcing our commitment to innovation through the MG Innovation Program, our aim is to find key solutions in the automotive space especially in the areas of green mobility and safe transportation. To address this, the upcoming Innovation Challenge (Hackathon) will give students or student groups a chance to present solutions and thereby come out with a collective solution in this space,” said Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director, MG Motor India.

The programme will also enable us to nurture future talent in the automotive space, as Gujarat steps up as one of the biggest automotive hubs in India,” Chaba added. Shortlisted applications invited to the hackathon will work on 5 different problem statements related to the automotive industry outlined at the start of the event. Top 3 teams will get prizes of INR 100,000; INR 50,000 and INR 25,000 respectively.

To be held on May 23rd, 2018, the day-long MG Innovation Challenge (Hackathon) will cater to over 150 students to come up with creative and innovative solutions for green mobility and safe transportation. Given the proximity to the Halol plant, MG Motor chose Navrachna University as the ideal location for the event.

The ‘MG Innovation Challenge’ is a further extension of the ‘MG Drives Innovation’ program, which was launched in partnership with TiE, Delhi NCR, in December 2017. As part of its commitment to community development around where its manufacturing facility is located, MG had also sponsored the MG Vadodara Marathon earlier in 2018.

MG Motor India to showcase brand legacy via its first-ever documentary “The Morris Garages Story” on Discovery Channel

Documentary to premiere on September 24th as part of the company’s brand-building and consumer awareness initiatives, ahead of next year’s launch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-W0rTo1SMw

New Delhi, Sept. 20: MG Motor India has announced the launch of its first-ever documentary “The Art of Motoring: The Morris Garages Story”, which encapsulates how the iconic brand’s rich legacy was built over the years and changed the world of sports motoring, forever. The documentary is part of a series of brand-building initiatives undertaken by MG Motor India to spread consumer awareness around its first vehicle launch in Q2, 2019. The 46-minute documentary will premiere on Discovery Channel on September 24 at 19:00 hrs.

The documentary aims to educate consumers on how the MG brand was established in 1924, starting as a performance-tuning outfit for Morris cars, and later how its roadsters became the most loved cars for celebrities and even the British Royal Family. We at MG Motor India are proud to have created this documentary which shows the feelings of emotions, love, passion, culture etc. associated with the MG cars - for consumers in India and around the world,” said Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director, MG Motor India.

The documentary also takes a closer look at MG’s record-breaking racing milestones in each decade and how the Octagonal badge has remained resilient despite various ownership changes. The narrative of the brand is built through the MG Car Club (MGCC) established in 1930 and its experienced members and classic car owners. The documentary has been produced by Blue Mango Films LLP, a production house based in New Delhi.

Speaking about the launch of the first-ever documentary, John Day, President, MG Car Club UK (MGCC), said, “It is a rare opportunity to be able to present the story of a brand that has existed for over nine decades and not only influenced but changed how the automotive industry evolved and the Indian team has executed it wonderfully. The MG Car Club members, MG fans and loyalists around the world and here in UK as well have great hopes from MG’s India chapter.”

India-bound MG SUV interior spied

We’ve got our hands on the first spy shots of the cabin of MG Motor India’s first SUV. At first glance, it feels like parent company SAIC has just mirrored the left-hand-drive layout but a closer look reveals that there are quite a few differences. The car for India gets a simpler but more upmarket-looking setup, slightly similar to the Baojun 560 sold abroad, which will appeal to buyers of all ages.

MG Motor's SUV for India gets a three-layered dashboard with the top part covered in soft-touch material and contrast stitching. The middle section has a dark grey gloss finish, houses the AC vents with chrome inserts, and has a provision for a free-standing infotainment touchscreen (not seen on this test mule). The instrument cluster is a simple unit with a large TFT display that's flanked by two large dials – the speedo and the tachometer. The AC vents are positioned at the centre, separated by a space that'll feature an analogue clock (again, not seen on the test mule). Below this, is the panel for the climate control system; the chunky round switches that adjust temperature have individual displays, and are placed in the middle.

The three-spoke steering wheel gets multiple buttons for audio and telephony controls, along with cruise control settings. The model being tested was equipped with push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable driver and passenger seats, an electric parking brake, an auto-hold function, a reverse camera, and front and rear parking sensors. Though not seen in the images, a sunroof and rear AC vents are expected to be part of SUV's features list.

According to our sources, the test mule was powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a CVT gearbox. For India, MG is likely to offer Fiat's 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine though. The model sold abroad comes with a rotary knob for selecting gears however, the model seen in India had a conventional gear knob with a provision for manual shifting as well.

The MG SUV for India will measure around 4,655mm in length, 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height, which makes it slightly bigger than the Jeep Compass. In spite of its large dimensions and long equipment list, MG Motor India is confident it can price its first SUV just under Rs 20 lakh, thanks to heavy localisation. The SUV will be produced at SAIC’s plant (formerly owned by General Motors) in Halol, Gujarat.

MG SUV to be priced close to Creta in India

MG Motor India has begun testing the close-to-production iteration of their first product in India. MG Motor's SUV for India will be larger than the Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass; two engine options will be on offer.

As far as pricing goes, MG Motor India aims to price this SUV a bit lower than its rivals. A pricing strategy close to the Hyundai Creta can be expected – which means the model could start in the range of under Rs 10 lakh for the petrol variants, going upto around Rs 16 lakh for the top-spec diesel variants. (ex-showroom)

The MG-badged Baojun 530 will likely measure 4.7-metres in length, 1.83-metre in width, and 1.76-metre in height.
