  • Mercedes-Benz has revealed that the upcoming S-class will have rear-seat airbags, active suspension, additional in-car monitoring, and rear-wheel steering.
  • Among new active-safety features, the 2021 S-class will be capable of raising itself three inches if a side collision is imminent, to divert force to the frame.
  • Rear-wheel steering will reduce the S-class's turning radius by seven feet.
Although we can't see the new Mercedes-Benz S-class until September, the automaker is pushing out bits of news about what we can expect from the upcoming luxury sedan. Today, Mercedes announced that the vehicle will have all-wheel steering, a dynamic suspension that can read the road, new rear-seat airbags, and proactive safety measures for side impacts.

For the safety-conscious, the S-class will now employ Pre-Safe Impulse Side. It's a weird name that essentially means that when the radar system on the S-class detects something is about to hit the car from the side, the entire vehicle will lift itself up three inches to divert the force of the impending collision to the door frame instead of the actual door. So the main body of the vehicle takes the brunt of the impact.

For additional safety, Mercedes is adding rear airbags to its executive rear-seat package. Those being chauffeured, whether by their corporate driver or a parent, will be that much safer now. Mercedes described how the system deploys: "Cylindrical, tubular structures are inflated with compressed gas and deploy a wing-shaped structure. A large, tentlike airbag deploys between the two wings, and this is inflated by the surrounding air via specially patented valves in the skin." The "tubes" actually make up the interior of the bag, which expands to cushion a passenger's head if it lurches forward toward the back of the front seat in a collision. The company says the flexibility of the bag and its design makes it suitable for adults, children, and child seats.

Mercedes also teased a new in-car monitor that watches the front seat. The automaker would only say that it will be able to detect a child seat in the front seat for the first time and have the MBUX infotainment system show an alert in the display about belt fastening. Other features are expected to be announced either closer to the reveal or when we finally get to see the new S-class.

Moving on from safety to comfort, which is deeply ingrained into the DNA of any S-class, Mercedes’ E-Active Body Control system is available on the new S-class sedan. The feature first appeared on the automaker’s GLE and GLS SUVs. The dynamic air suspension dampens harsh road conditions for a smoother ride. It also lets the S-class have the Curve feature, which reduces body roll felt in the cabin during cornering. The vehicle leans the body into the turn so that those inside the car feel less of the centrifugal force that's part of going around a corner.

E-Active also brings road smoothing to the S-class using the cameras mounted in the windshield to create a three-dimensional digital version of the road and send that information to the suspension, which then primes itself to best tackle any holes, ruts, or other road inconsistencies. Mercedes told Car and Driver that the cameras can detect height differences as low as two millimeters under the right lighting conditions.

Finally, the latest S-class will have optional rear-axle steering. At speeds below 37 mph, it turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the fronts to reduce the turning radius of the S-class by seven feet to less than 36 feet. At speeds above 37 mph, the wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels for increased stability. When purchasing the vehicle, new owners can add the option that either turns the rear wheels 4.5 degrees or 10 degrees.

While the vehicle is still wrapped in camouflage, it's clear that at least features-wise, Mercedes is determined to keep the S-class at the top of the luxury-sedan market.

With the new age S, Mercedes had pushed the envelope out of the reach of the competition in Audi and BMW. Now they are simply making the S class; a vehicle of completely another segment. That said, they have already done whatever they could in the car; what was left for now was this one - and they have done this too. But there lies one question; having an airbag coming out of front seat means a huge role of seatback position, many people push the seat to front and seatback to acute angles for enjoying the limo comfort; how much beneficial this airbag will be for them?

    [*]
    • depending on the equipment level, MBUX Interior Assist recognizes up to 20 control commands
      • New safety functions include recognition of an unattached child seat on the front passenger seat and the blind spot warning. This detects the intention to leave the vehicle by the movements of the occupant. This allows an even earlier warning of other road users and obstacles along the side of the vehicle
      • New convenience functions include prepositioning of the driver's seat and outside mirrors according to body size, and operation of the rear roller blind by glancing over the shoulder. Additionally, the sliding sunroof can also be operated by hand gestures
    • The voice assistant "Hey Mercedes" listens even more carefully with improved understanding of the occupants:
      • "Hey Mercedes" can also be controlled from the rear. Several microphones help to tell the system which seat the voice is coming from and a flashing ambient lighting identifies the current speaker
      • If the driver says "I'm tired", an activation program of ENERGIZING comfort control is started. The same sentence from the rear starts a well-being program.
      • "Hey Mercedes" explains functions ("Explore me"), and can help guide when connecting a smartphone via Bluetooth, or explains where the first-aid kit can be found
      • The activation keyword "Hey Mercedes" is no longer necessary for certain applications. An incoming call can be taken direct with "Accept call", for example
      • "Hey Mercedes" now supports 27 languages with natural language understanding (NLU). This makes natural interaction on a wide range of topics possible
      • The new Chit-Chat and knowledge domain supplies the right answer to many questions - even questions about animal noises or general knowledge can be answered

      • Domestic systems and home appliances can also be linked to the vehicle and voice-controlled thanks to the Smart Home function
    • Head-up displays (HUD) with augmented reality (AR) content
      • When navigating, for example, animated turn-off arrows ("fishbones") are virtually projected onto the road lane. For the assistance functions, information from Active Distance Assist is shown.
[*][*]Further to the switch icons in the door panels for seat adjustments - users can also change their seating position via the display screens. Operation of comfort functions such as seat heating or massage is also possible by voice control
Puristic, luxurious design as an intuitive experience:

  • The driver display and media display offer a comprehensive aesthetic experience
    • The appearance of the screens can be individualized with a choice of four display styles (Discreet, Sporty, Exclusive, Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service)
  • The number of classic controls has been greatly reduced: 27 fewer hardkeys (mechanical switches) than in the preceding model
    • As an addition to touching and swiping, voice control and natural hand gestures, gaze control extends the operating options
    • However, key functions such as the lights or windscreen wipers can still be operated directly. The climate control panel is permanently at the lower edge of the display
  • The user interface (UI) follows human intuition
    • MBUX Interior Assist responds to gestures and movements
    • "Hey Mercedes" responds to speech
    • In the large head-up display, relevant information is projected into the driver's field of vision at a virtual distance of approx. 33 feet (10 meters)
      • Colored augmented reality content can be integrated into this (see above)
      • As this is superimposed directly onto reality, the result is directly perceptible information that is important for the current driving situation
The major innovations in detail

Augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD): Head-up display (HUD) with innovative variant with a particularly large image. The aperture angle of the display is 10° horizontal and 5° vertical, and the image appears virtually at a distance of 33 feet (10 meters). This display area corresponds to a monitor with a 77-inch diagonal. The AR-HUD provides a great deal of augmented reality content for driving assistance systems and navigation information. For the driver this blends into the surroundings ahead of the vehicle, and can therefore contribute to further reduced distraction. The image-forming unit (DMD, digital mirror device by Texas Instruments) consists of a high-resolution matrix of 1.3 mill. individual mirrors and a highly efficient light source. The technology is also used by projectors in movie theaters. In the S-Class it is used by Mercedes-Benz for the first time to generate images in the head-up display.

3D driver display:An impression of spatial depth is created when the eyes of a viewer perceive different perspective views of an object in the display. In this innovative auto-stereoscopic display, this is achieved by the sophisticated combination of a conventional LCD display with a special pixel structure and a controllable LCD aperture grille. What is known as a barrier mask is positioned a few millimeters in front of the LCD. It is so precisely adjusted to the head position of the viewer that the left and right eye see different pixels of the LCD. This creates the desired impression of depth. A stereo camera system is integrated into the display. This is used to precisely determine the eye position of the viewer. Thanks to methods developed by Mercedes-Benz to adapt distances and a very low-latency system configuration, the driver enjoys a wide range of free movement. The image in the driver display is continuously adjusted.

OLED technology: The abbreviation stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. In contrast to LCD technology, an OLED display consists of several organic layers applied to a plastic substrate. In the S-Class the OLED display is located behind a glass facing, and in combination with the actuators and pressure sensors behind it, it provides a comprehensive control and display experience. Evaluation of the pressure exerted and haptic confirmation of touch commands makes extended functionalities possible. OLED panels emit light when subjected to an electric current, and unlike an LCD they do not require external background lighting. Power is only consumed where pixels light up. Among other benefits, this ensures a better black level and even stronger contrasts. When showing typical video sequences, OLED technology has an up to 30 percent lower energy consumption than LCD technology.

Voice assistant "Hey Mercedes": Conventional voice control systems in cars call for certain fixed commands from their users. Because it understands natural language, "Hey Mercedes" listens to almost every word and understands practically any sentence relating to infotainment sector and vehicle operation in 27 languages. Indirect speech is also recognized, for instance if the user says "I am cold" instead of the clear command "Set temperature in footwell to 72 degrees" in order to operate the climate control for the footwell. The voice control is also capable of learning. The system is able to tune into the user and their voice and also showcases improved understanding of non-native speakers. Additionally, the software models on the server are able to learn new buzzwords or can change use of language with time. The system no longer answers stereotypically, but varies in the dialogue output. The fundamental way the language assistant operates: the voice input is freed from background noises, compressed and transmitted. Both the head unit in the vehicle and the server evaluate the data and send a reply. The system decides which reply is the most likely, then within a few seconds the reply/reaction follows. This means that the voice assistant also answers if there is no connectivity.*

New 2020 Mercedes S-Class: luxurious interior teased and ride review

Mercedes S-Class interior details-10.jpg

The interior design of the all-new Mercedes S-Class has been teased ahead of the car’s full reveal early in September. Judging by these new teasers, the seventh-generation of the brand’s flagship saloon looks set to mark a radical departure from its predecessor in terms of both design and tech.

Mercedes S-Class interior details-11.jpg
Inspiration for the new cabin has been taken from upmarket home interior design and the world of luxury yachts - steps which have contributed to what Mercedes calls a “lounge-type ambience”. While few lounges can claim to boast five separate digital screens, the layout and materials appear to take the new model in a more minimalist direction than previous S-Class generations.

Mercedes S-Class interior details-9.jpg

The most eye-catching of those screens is the new central infotainment display. At the top, the huge portrait-oriented touch-sensitive system sits proud of a dashboard which gently slopes away. However, its base follows a continuous sweep into the centre console.

Mercedes S-Class interior details-5.jpg

The boating influences extend beyond the flowing dashboard and into some of the materials themselves. The wood trim which covers the dash and between the individual rear seats of the car teased here, features an open-pore finish inlaid with strips of aluminum. Elsewhere, there’s more conventional automotive cues, such as quilted, perforated leather upholstery on the seats.

Mercedes S-Class interior details-2.jpg

The bullet-style vents of the old car have gone; in their place are a bank of four slim horizontal vents at the top of the dashboard, and a pair of narrow vertical units to each side.

Mercedes S-Class interior details.jpg

The new S-Class will use its tech to make the driving experience as comfortable as possible. Mercedes’ “Energising coach” can alter various systems within the car - lighting, seat massaging, fragrances and ventilation, among others - based on both car-based (driving and trip information) and human-based (driver fatigue and stress levels). It will even integrate with a driver’s compatible fitness bracelet or smartphone to tailor these functions as accurately as possible. Many of these settings can be shared between occupants, or set individually from one another.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 interior technology-3.jpg

Tell the S-Class your height, and it can adjust the seat, steering wheel and mirrors accordingly to the ideal driving position - though specific adjustments can still be made by the driver to get things spot on.

Mercedes S-Class.jpg

Elsewhere, the S-Class will make the most of its extensive mood lighting to present information as well as a specific ambience. Tied in with driver assist systems, the lighting is able to warn the driver of a vehicle in their blind spot by glowing red, for example.

Mercedes believes that the new S-Class is the most practical model it has ever produced, too. Though no official measurements have been confirmed, the new model is said to be more spacious inside in almost every dimension relative to the sixth-generation model.

New 2020 Mercedes S-Class: comfort and technology
A completely new suspension system called E-Active Body Control will be introduced on the S-Class. It features a fresh set of adaptive dampers, five multi-core processors, a camera and 20 sensors scattered around the car, all of which monitor the road surface and driving style 1,000 times per second to make adjustments to the suspension accordingly.

Mercedes says the system will be able to instantly respond to the road conditions. For example, in the system’s ‘Curve’ driving mode, the S-Class’s suspension will actively lean the car into bends, like a motorcycle, in an effort to improve the ride.

New Mercedes S-Class aims to redefine the luxury saloon for 2020 and beyond

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-11.jpg

This is the all-new Mercedes S-Class - the seventh-generation of the Mercedes’ flagship model and answer to the new Audi A8, the updated BMW 7 Series and upmarket Bentley Flying Spur.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-13.jpg

Mercedes makes a simple but bold claim about the latest S-Class, that it is ‘‘the best car in the world’. It goes on sale in Europe in December, with market launches in the USA and China following in February 2021.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-26.jpg

New 2020 Mercedes S-Class: design and platform
The new S-Class is the first Mercedes to be based on a new generation of the firm’s MRA platform for saloon cars. It means that alongside the model’s traditional fastidious approach to luxury and comfort, this new car is an important milestone for the company - it comes with a technological revolution inside the cabin, that will set the tone for the next-generation versions of the C-Class and E-Class.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-32.jpg

Mercedes has confirmed two versions for the European market - standard wheelbase and a long wheelbase. The standard car sizes up at 5,179mm long, meaning it has grown by around 54mm. Step up to the long wheelbase model, and the car measures 5,289mm nose to tail. In both cases, the benefits of the growth spurt are found in the back, with both cars fielding more legroom and headroom than before, as well as bigger boots, both up by 20 litres to 550 litres.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-10.jpg

Mercedes says the new S-Class is the most opulent expression of the brand’s latest saloon design language; the grille is larger and more upright than before, and is now flanked by new Multibeam LED headlights, which are now available with projector beams as part of the new Digital Light system. The setup can project shapes and symbols onto the road ahead, warning the driver of hazards such as roadworks, traffic lights, pedestrians, and capable of projecting lane guidelines too.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-9.jpg

The sides of the car are smoother, while flush door handles are available as an option. The rear end is defined by a pair of triangular tail lights, linked by a chrome strip; the whole shape is more aerodynamic than before, not only aiding fuel economy, but reducing wind noise significantly too.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-27.jpg
This time round there will be no Coupe or Cabriolet versions, with the S-Class to be kept strictly in limousine form factor. Alongside the standard and long-wheelbase versions of the car, an extended wheelbase Maybach badged variant will appear later, described by R&D boss Markus Schafer as “very differentiated” and a big step forward for the brand’s Maybach models.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-28.jpg

Interior and technology
The most radical design changes are reserved for the cabin, where the S-Class features an all-new interior architecture centred around a new, second-generation MBUX infotainment system.

Mercedes S-Class 2020 official pics-36.jpg

It’s impossible to ignore the new central display, using smartphone quality OLED screen technology and haptic feedback. It’s 12.8-inches in size and portrait in orientation, flowing directly into the new-look centre console and sitting on top of a dashboard with a new, flat plane surface running from one side of the car to the other. It comes with a new user interface and is compatible with over-the-air update technology to the S-Class.
