Mercedes has confirmed more details on the design and interior technology of the new EQS, ahead of the car’s scheduled launch on 15 April. The EQS will act as the pure-electric alternative to the seventh- generation S-Class, rivalling the likes of the updated Tesla Model S and Audi e-tron GT.

Unlike Mercedes’s combustion-engined flagship saloon, the EQS features a cab-forward design, as less space is required up front for the powertrain. Mercedes says this has increased the amount of cabin space, which should provide a little extra comfort.

The EQS was also designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, to eke the maximum amount of range out of the battery pack. So, the roof was shaped to follow a single bow-like line, the radiator grille can be shuttered and the EV’s undertray is completely flat to minimise drag. The result of all this is that Mercedes claims a drag coefficient of just 0.20Cd.

Inside, the EQS features Mercedes’s new Hyperscreen infotainment system. It’s a 55.5-inch (or 141 centimetre) curved unit, which combines a digital instrument cluster, central media screen and climate controls on a single glass panel. There’s also a media screen on the passenger-side dash, which displays digital art when the seat is unoccupied.

Mercedes has tried to make its MBUX Hyperscreen as easy as possible to use, eliminating the current system’s reliance on a menu screen. The firm says that the system’s most important functions will be accessible from the home page, the selection being automatically tailored to the driver using the car’s artificial intelligence programme.

Buyers also get a Burmester surround sound system, which comes pre-loaded with two “sound experiences” which Mercedes says will provide some background noise to fill the void left by the lack of an internal combustion engine.

Mercedes has also fitted its latest cabin air filtration system, which prevents fine dust, pollen and microparticles from entering the interior. There’s a new charcoal filter, too, which can sift out contaminants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

This technology feeds into Mercedes’s latest Energising Comfort cabin ambience system, which adjusts the climate control, lighting, background music and interior fragrance to suit the driver’s mood. It’s possible to choose from three programmes: Forest Glade, Sounds of the Sea and Summer Rain. The first setting plays birdsong and the sounds of rustling leaves through the stereo system and pumps a forest fragrance through the air vents.

The second plays wave and seagull sounds through the stereo and blasts cool air from the air conditioning system in sporadic bursts, while the final option plays the sound of distant thunder and pattering rain.

Mercedes has even added a soundscape which can supposedly help the driver recover more quickly during a break in their journey. Called “Power Nap,” it claims to create a sleep friendly atmosphere, by reclining the driver’s seat, drawing the roller blinds and adjusting the climate controls.

The function even has a dedicated wake-up programme, which activates a subtle seat massage and ventilation setting. A unique fragrance is also circulated around the cabin and the seat is automatically raised back to its upright position.

The EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ. With it, Mercedes-EQ is redefining this vehicle segment. The EQS is also the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles. Fusing technology, design, functionality and connectivity, the EQS delights both drivers and passengers. First models on the market will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW (electrical consumption NEDC combined: 19.1-16.0 kWh/100 km; CO2-emissions: 0 g/km) and the EQS 580 4MATIC with 385 kW (electrical consumption NEDC combined: 20.0-16.9 kWh/100 km; CO2-emissions: 0 g/km). The consumption figures according to WLTP: EQS 450+ electrical consumption combined 20.4-15.7 kWh/100 km, CO2-emissions 0 g/km; EQS 580 4MATIC electrical consumption combined 21.8-17.4 kWh/100 km, CO2-emissions 0 g/km.

As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. In many areas, Mercedes is already thinking about tomorrow today: the new EQS is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbon-neutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. This is because Mercedes-Benz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. Mercedes-Benz AG has had its climate protection targets confirmed by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI).

With a great deal of meticulous detail work and on the basis of the Purpose design, the aerodynamicists, in close cooperation with the designers, were able to achieve a new cd best value of 0.20[1]. This makes the EQS the most aerodynamic production car in the world. The operating range particularly benefits from this. It is also among the best in terms of quiet running. The very low wind noise level contributes significantly to this.

The EQS also currently sets a very good value for recuperation: Of the maximum deceleration in the DAuto recuperation program of 5 m/s², up to 3 m/s² is achieved by recuperation (2 m/s² by the wheel brakes). This allows decelerating to a standstill without using the brake pedal, while at the same time the range benefits from this recuperation strategy and the high recuperation power (up to 290 kW[2]). Deceleration is also applied to detected vehicles ahead until they come to a standstill, for example at traffic lights. Intelligent energy recovery is situation-optimised with the aid of ECO Assist and acts with foresight, taking into account traffic conditions or topography, among other things. The driver also can set three energy recovery levels and the coast function via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

With ranges up to 770 kilometres (WLTP) and an output of up to 385 kW the powertrain of the EQS also meets every expectation of a progressive saloon in the S-Class segment. A performance version with up to 560 kW is being planned. All EQS models have an electric powertrain (eATS) at the rear axle, while the versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS at the front axle.

The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density. The larger of the two batteries has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. That is around 26 percent more than the EQC (EQC 400 4MATIC: combined electrical consumption: 21.5-20.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[3]. The innovative battery management software, developed in-house, allows updates over the air (OTA). In this way, the energy management system remains up to date throughout the life cycle. In terms of the cell chemistry, the cobalt content of the cathodes has been reduced to ten percent.

The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes[4]. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger. In Japan, bidirectional charging with the EQS will also be possible, i.e. charging in both directions. In addition, there are various intelligent charging programs that can be activated automatically depending on the location, and functions such as particularly battery-saving charging.

By means of high-quality certificates of origin, Mercedes-Benz guarantees that energy from renewable energy sources is fed into the grid for charging current sourced via Mercedes me Charge. This so-called Green Charging has been an integral part of Mercedes me Charge since 2021. But Mercedes me Charge can do even more: drive to the appropriate charging station[5], open the flap, plug in and the current starts flowing: this is how easy the charging process is with the EQS, thanks to Plug & Charge. Other highlights include the densest network of charging points, with more than 500,000 of them in 31 countries, including over 200,000 in Europe. With IONITY Unlimited, all European Mercedes me Charge customers can use the fast charging network free of charge for one year.

Mercedes EQS SUV Teased Ahead Of April 19 Full Debut

FireShot Capture 025 - Mercedes EQS SUV Teased Ahead Of April 19 Full Debut - www.motor1.com.png

It almost feels like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV has been around for years with all the spy photos and reports of the electric SUV. However, it hasn’t been revealed yet and the German automaker is preparing to launch its zero-emissions flagship SUV later this month. The first teaser image with the EQS SUV is here, bringing the announcement for a world debut on April 19.

mercedes-benz-eqs-suv.jpg
The electric SUV will be the third model of the brand to be based on its new modular platform for electric vehicles. Think of the EQS SUV – as its name implies – as a utility version of the EQS sedan with the same design language, but a more spacious cabin and higher ground clearance. The interior, Mercedes promises, will blend “intuitive digital controls” and “innovative trim elements,” creating “an avant-garde ambience.” Seven seats will be available as an option.

This new teaser image doesn’t reveal much from a design perspective though we know the production model will likely borrow many design elements from the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV concept. Obviously, the road-going model will be less sophisticated in terms of its overall appearance. Or, put simply, don’t expect such giant chrome wheels and highly ornamented chrome grille on the front fascia.

The EQS SUV will be the fourth electric crossover from Mercedes, joining the already available EQA, EQB, and EQC. The flagship SUV from Stuttgart without a tailpipe will be assembled at the Tuscaloosa plant in the United States together with the smaller EQE SUV, also currently under development. Fans of the ultra-luxury Maybach brand will also be happy to learn it will get its own version of the EQS SUV with a posher cabin and design with more influences from the Maybach EQS SUV concept.

In terms of technical specifications, Mercedes is not ready to provide details regarding the EQS SUV’s powertrain. It will obviously be fully electric and the only piece of information currently confirmed is that it will be capable of up to 373 miles (600 kilometers) on a single range, depending on the configuration and driving manners. An intelligent off-road driving mode will be added to "ensure a wide range of possible uses."
