Nearly three years since launching the GT R Coupe, Mercedes-AMG is finally taking the wraps off its roadster counterpart. If you’ve been waiting for the version with the electrically retractable fabric roof, we’ve got good news for you as the new droptop from Affalterbach offers extremely similar levels of performance compared to its fixed-roof sibling.

Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series spied at the Nurburgring

Cosmetically, the Black Series takes on a lot of the racecar’s design such as the huge rear diffuser, braced front splitter, vented bonnet and enormous, manually adjustable rear wing. The same quad-tipped titanium exhaust system also features.

Chassis upgrades for the GT R Black Series will be extensive. From what we can glean from these images, it’ll be fitted with a set of larger diameter vented and drilled disc brakes, with six-piston calipers for the front axle and four-piston calipers for the rear.

The suspension will also be lowered by several millimetres and it’ll be set up with stiffer springs all round and slightly more camber for the front wheels. To take advantage of the uprated chassis, the production car will also receive a set of wider alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

Inside, the AMG GT R Black Series will be largely similar to the AMG GT R Pro, with a pair of heavily bolstered, carbon-fibre-backed bucket seats and a sports steering wheel. As with the GT R Pro, Mercedes-AMG’s track package should be offered as an optional extra, adding a full roll-cage, a safety harness and a fire extinguisher.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been accidentally revealed, a week ahead of its scheduled debut on the 15 July. The German brand released the supercar’s launch video on YouTube, unveiling its exterior styling in full.

When the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series goes on sale later this year, it will be the most extreme road going version of the car to date, drawing inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT GT3 race car.

Cosmetically, the Black Series will feature the same tweaks as the racecar, including a huge rear diffuser, a braced front splitter, a vented bonnet, wider wheel arches and an enormous, manually adjustable rear wing. To help the engine breathe better, Mercedes-AMG has also fitted a larger-bore, quad-exit exhaust system.

It’ll be powered by a heavily retuned version of the GT’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, which will likely feature forged internals, new camshafts and an improved engine management system. To complement the freer-flowing exhaust, the GT Black Series should also feature a pair of upgraded turbochargers and a less restrictive intake manifold.

All these upgrades mean that the Black Series’s power output should climb to well over 600bhp, which is a substantial increase over the current GT flagship, the 573bhp GT R Pro. Torque should also show an increase over the Pro’s 700Nm figure.

New Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series unveiled: 720bhp, 202mph and 0-62mph in 3.2s

The new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been officially revealed. When it goes on sale later this year, it will be the most extreme road going version of the car to date, drawing inspiration from the brand’s AMG GT GT3 race car and offering fresh competition for the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

New Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series 2020-28.jpg

It’s powered by a heavily modified version of the standard car’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, which has been fitted with a host of go-faster bits from Mercedes AMG GT GT3 racer. Upgrades include a set of reprofiled camshafts, fresh exhaust manifolds, larger turbos, bigger intercoolers and an aggressive new tune for the car’s ECU.

All this means that the engine now produces 720bhp and 800Nm of torque – which is 250bhp and 200Nm more than the entry-level AMG GT. Power goes to the rear wheels via a beefed-up version of the car’s seven-speed automatic gearbox, which AMG says gives this latest Black Series model a 0–62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 202mph.

Mercedes-AMG says the GT Black Series’s new engine is the most powerful V8 unit that has ever fitted to one of its cars – so, to keep all that performance in check, the firm has given the GT’s chassis a thorough overhaul with tougher, yet lighter, components.

There’s a new coil-over suspension system, which features electronically controlled dampers and double wishbone arms front and rear. The car’s suspension geometry has also been tweaked, allowing the GT Black Series to run more negative camber on the front axle – which Mercedes-AMG says will deliver improved cornering performance.

The GT Black Series also has a wider track than the standard model and, wherever possible, Mercedes has swapped metal components in the car’s chassis for carbon fibre replacement. So, there’s lightened versions of the GT’s front and rear torsion bars, as well as a new carbon fibre shear panel at the rear of the vehicle.
