Maruti Suzuki will tomorrow join the league of carmakers producing one million or more units a year.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Chairman R C Bhargava told PTI.
When we started the company (in 1981), nobody believed that it would last beyond 3-4 years, nobody believed that it would one day produce even one lakh units. Everybody thought it was just a political gimmick.
The first 'Maruti 800' was rolled out from Maruti's Gurgaon plant in December 14, 1983.

In its first year of commercial operations (December- March 1983), Maruti had produced 840 cars and in the following full fiscal year, production had touched a little over 22,000.

Suzuki Motor Corp Chairman Osamu Suzuki would be present to see the roll-out of the one millionth vehicle - a red- coloured Swift.

The then Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi said:
And it is my desire, that this motorcar will serve the ordinary people of India and they will have no complaint about this car. I hope it will contribute.

The car might have been rolled out by now and Gurgaon Plant will be full of Media Vans. It is definitely a remarkable achievement by Maruti Suzuki, Congratulations to them!

Question - Who's going to be the owner of Millionth car, i.e. Red Swift, Some VIP?

@Aditya, I’d agree with you on that. Many foreign carmakers failed in this country on initial phase when the term “car” wasn’t too common in our country and was a better synonym of status symbol, but lucky both the partners which have grown tremendously in automotive sector which each other’s support and today the scenario is that plot for Maruti Suzuki cars is already reserved on top of sales charts!

The Swift is produced exclusively at Manesar now. So I guess the ceremony would have happened at Manesar.
And to answer RSM, Maruti has three plants in the original site at Gurgaon. Manesar is their newer greenfield project. Models like the SX4, Swift (and Dzire) and the A-Star are being made there ... the other models are made at Gurgaon.
