Maruti to supply new Swift hybrids to government [:)]

Maruti Suzuki, which has developed production-ready Swift hybrid hatchbacks (christened ‘Swift Range Extender’), to the government as part of a pilot project during FY 2014-1.
While the homologation process of the hybrid Swift is nearly completed, the team is expecting ARAI certification anytime now. Secondly, the officials at Maruti Suzuki are awaiting orders from the government to supply an undisclosed number of these Swift hybrids to the latter as a part of the pilot plan. However, due to the upcoming elections, the dates are not yet known. But we can safely say that by the first quarter of next financial year (FY2014-15), the picture on this project would be clearer.”
Maruti’s internal tests claim that the Swift Range Extender offers a combined fuel efficiency of up to 48.2km per litre, which includes a 25.5km run powered by the fully-charged battery. The battery, according to company data, takes nearly 90 minutes to get fully charged
The Maruti Suzuki Swift Range Extender runs on an inline three-cylinder, 658cc petrol engine (borrowed from Suzuki, Japan) and is also equipped with a front-axle mounted 55KW electric motor, which is powered by a 5kWh lithium ion battery.
According to company sources, while the production-ready model has been developed in India, all the major electric gear (such as the electric motor, battery and other components) required for this project was imported from Japan and other countries. The Swift hybrid model is around 130kg heavier than its conventional petrol-engined counterpart currently sold in India, which weighs between 960-990kg (kerb weight).

But how it perform with an inline three-cylinder, 658cc petrol engine.
Also it is around 130kg heavier than its conventional petrol-engined counterpart currently sold in India.

i am not a technical person to comment but with extra weight and a small engine, no car will perform good on road.

Edit : Is this engine is turbo charged with DI ?

I think its good initiative by the government but will have to wait and watch how it performs on the road, also will have to see how they price this car.

Nice to see govt. serious about the mileage about its fleet. The cost saved can be used to lay/re-lay roads [:)]

Maruti Suzuki May Consider Launching Swift Hybrid.

In an effort in going Green the goverment of India recently introduced the Fame India Scheme- 'Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India' - as a part the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan.

Under the new scheme, the Government will offer incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles upto Rs. 29,000 for two-wheelers and Rs. 1.38 lakh for cars.

One such product could be the Maruti Swift Range Extender, which was showcased at the event. But the company would develop its hybrid models only after getting further clarity about the schemes and incentives. The vehicle runs on 3 models - series hybrid, parallel hybrid and all-electric.
In series hybrid model, the petrol powertrain works as a generator to power the lithium-ion battery which then powers the electric motor. In this mode, the petrol engine indirectly helps generate electricity to power the electric motor. In parallel hybrid mode, both - the petrol engine and the electric motor - provide power to the wheels.

The Swift Range Extender weighs 1,600 Kg, and takes 1.5 hours to completely charge the lithium-ion battery through a 200V socket.

Although slated for a 2017 release, the 48.2 kmpl Maruti Suzuki Swift Range Extender is road ready!

The hatchback was spotted yesterday driving on the streets of Delhi with the ‘FAME India Eco Drive 2015’

The Swift range extender is a plug-in hybrid hatchback which is based on the European Swift model.

Powering the Swift hybrid is a 658cc, 3-cylinder, petrol motor coupled with an electric motor which produces a combined power figure of 73 BHP matched to a single-speed automatic gearbox.

Combined fuel efficiency is rated at 48.2 kmpl and can be driven for around 25.5 km in pure electric mode. The battery requires 1.5 hours to be fully charged via a 200V socket.

Maruti Swift hybrid: all you need to know

The Swift hybrid, called Range Extender, was showcased by Maruti Suzuki at the Auto Expo 2014. Maruti is looking to develop units initially to provide them to the Delhi government as part of this pilot project.

The Maruti Swift Range Extender makes use of a 658cc inline three-cylinder petrol engine in tandem with a 55kW electric motor mounted on the front-axle. There are three driving modes – Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Electric. In Hybrid mode, the internal combustion engine charges the electric motor; in Parallel, both work together and in Electric, it runs purely on batteries. There’s a 5kWh lithium ion battery which can power the car for a range of 25.5km, and takes around 90 minutes to get fully charged.

The Swift Range Extender is around 130kg heavier than its conventional petrol-engined counterpart currently sold in India, which weighs around 960-990kg. Maruti claims that the Swift Range Extender offers a combined fuel efficiency of up to 48.2kpl.

Although there is no confirmation yet on where Maruti stands in terms of its pilot project, or whether the commercial launch is any time soon, the company did showcase the model again on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5). The carmaker is understood to still be working out the feasibility factor. Since the engine, electric motor and the battery pack are all imported, the pricing is likely to be on the higher side. But what will help Maruti is the Indian government’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles) scheme which offers incentives to encourage EV and hybrid manufacturers.
