The chairman of Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car maker has just revealed that the Maruti Omni passenger and cargo van variants will soon go out of production, and will be replaced by the Eeco. The Eeco is already a solid seller for Maruti, and will be upgraded to meet the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) norms. The Omni will bow out by the middle of this year, after more than 35 years of continuous production.

2019 Maruti Eeco Spied With New Features, Launch Soon

The 2019 Maruti Suzuki Eeco has obtained features like driver side airbag, Anti-lock Brakes, seatbelt reminder, speed alert and reverse parking sensors along with a cup holder. The Eeco people carrier has been around in the Indian market since making debut at the 2010 Auto Expo. It replaced Versa that served for almost ten years and is based on the same platform as the Versa.

The Omni, which has been on sale for nearly three and half decades, won’t be upgraded to comply with BNVSAP (Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program) norms and instead, the Eeco will likely take its place. It is expected to be re-engineered with structural upgrades to meet the full-frontal impact, off-set-frontal impact and side impact tests at devised speeds.

Maruti has updated its popular people mover once again, this time structurally, in order to comply with the latest crash test norms that came into effect on October 1, 2019. The upgrade has come with a hike in prices – the Eeco range is now priced from Rs 3.61 lakh for the entry-level Standard (5-seater) variant, and goes up to Rs 6.61 lakh for the Eeco Care. This means that the Eeco line-up has seen an increase in price of Rs 6,000-9,000, depending on the variant.
