Re: The First Most Affordable A/T Car in India – It’s Maruti 800!

One of my distant uncle, a handicapped doctor, got a similar auto 800. It had '800 Automatic' logo in bootlid and I was wondering all my l'il age what an automatic was :D. He then bought a Honda City A/T.
Sorry to be opening up an old thread, but is your Uncle a homeo doctor?
we have Dr. Patel's Homeo clinic in Kottayam, Kerala and it has a Green Automatic 800.

He's a skin specialist and in Trivandrum. He sold off the 800 and bought an i10 auto.

His 800 was blue, I believe and had "POPULAR 800 AUTOMATIC" logo (same font and shape/size/material as the 800 logo).

Maruti 800 was offered to Orthopedic disables on special order till 1992. There was 25% discount on Central Excise Tax on each order if it meets the requirements of Govt. of India and certified by panel of Doctors, that the person can drive the car if modified accordingly.
Automatic transmission was not available to general public and it was craze among people to drive such cars at that time.
On special request from the customer along with desired documents, Suzuki mates the 3 speed A/T and changes the controls according to the requirements of the customers, like, accelerator and brakes in hand control type.
This 3 speed A/T was also offered with Zen and Esteem for some time.
Maruti later objected on the misuse of this special purpose vehicle by public in India and this facility was discontinued by Govt. of India as that time Maruti was in control of Central Govt.
Till date Maruti 800 A/T is only special purpose car for disables in India.

Maruti 800 was available in automatic guise only for disabled persons. One had to produce a medical certificate from a medical board to that effect.I had seen one used by a Polio afflicted man.But that car had accelerator and brake to be used by hand

AFAIK the 800 AT was a 2 speed.

This 3 speed A/T was also offered with Zen and Esteem for some time.
The 3 speed was offered on the Zen, Esteem and Wagon R. And I heard that it was on the Estilo too on special order (I may be picking up one of these cars).[/QUOTE]

Are you sure it's still available?

According to Wikipedia -It was offered as 5-speed gearbox (limited edition).
Link of the same Maruti 800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
That's the 5 speed manual.
