Will be based on the Ssangyong Tivoli’s X100 platform.

Mahindra-S201-rear-compact-SUV-spotted-testing-in-Chennai.jpg

Reader Kiran Kumar has spotted the Mahindra S201 mule in Chennai. As the S201 is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli’s X100 platform, early prototypes are simply Tivolis wrapped in and white camouflage.

According older reports, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, had confirmed that the new compact SUV is in the works. Positioned above the Scorpio, it will rival the top-spec variants of softroaders like the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, the upcoming Tata Nexon and the Hyundai Carlino.

Reports promise that the Mahindra S201 will look different from the SsangYong Tivoli. The exterior and interior styling could be penned jointly by Mahindra and Pininfarina. It’s unknown what engine options are planned for the Mahindra S201. Mahindra has a wide portfolio of diesel engines, but only a few petrol units.

The S201 will more than likely offer petrol option at launch, which could debut a new 1.5-litre four cylinder unit which the Mahindra is co-developing with SsangYong. It will be available in both manual and automatic transmissions, while an AWD system is unlikely.

Expect to hear more on the S201 later this year.

Mahindra S201 sub-4 metre SUV spied

Mahindra is working on a small SUV codenamed ‘Mahindra S201’ in India. As the SUV’s local testing continues, a new batch of its spy shots has surfaced online, courtesy Rushlane reader Laxman.

The Mahindra S201 is underpinned by the SsangYong Tivoli’s X100 platform. Mahindra is reportedly working on two versions of this model, one having a sub-4 metre body to rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon and the other with a bigger body that accommodates extra seats at the back. The test mule in the spy shots is the 5-seat, sub-4 metre version which arrives first.

Mahindra will offer the Mahindra S201 with a 1.2-litre GDi turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This will apply to both versions. The latter may not have any direct competition, but Mahindra is expected to position it as a premium SUV competing with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur.

The Mahindra S201’s market launch will take place later this year, Dr. Pawan Goenka has confirmed.

Mahindra S201 (Maruti Vitara Brezza challenger) with production exterior spied

Mahindra-S201-rear-three-quarters-spy-shot.jpg

The Mahindra S201 is steadily heading towards the production line. Team-BHP forum member srinath34 recently spied the vehicle with production body panels, tail lamps and alloy wheels, indicating the advancement.

The production Mahindra S201 has features like horizontal tail lamps possibly with LED lighting, rear fog lamps, double-spoke alloy wheels, roof rails and roof spoiler with integrated stop lamp. Unlike the SsangYong Tivoli, from which it borrows the X100 platform, it has a license plate recess on the tailgate instead of the bumper. Another difference is the body length, with the Mahindra measuring no longer than four metres to qualify as a small car for lower taxation.

The Mahindra S201 will come with 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. It will have a 5-seat layout. A stretched version measuring over four metres is the next planned variant, similar to the SsangYong Tivoli Air. Unlike the SsangYong’s Tivoli’s stretched version, the extended Mahindra S201’s will use the additional space for two extra seats at the back, not for expanded luggage space. This 7-seat version will also employ 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engines.

The Mahindra S201 will go on sale after the Mahindra U321 this (calendar) year. The 7-seat version will follow next year.

Mahindra S201 demo vehicle reveals new features, launch in January 2019

The Mahindra S201 is about a month away from its launch, and a fresh batch of images circulating on Facebook today reveals more of the Maruti Vitara Brezza rival which could be the 'Inferno'.
mahindra-s201-spy-image-covered-images-front-7b7b.jpg

M&M will reveal the name of the SUV tomorrow in Mumbai and confirm product details. The variant here comes with a third headrest, and perhaps a centre armrest but does not show a rear air vent.
Based on the Ssangyong Tivoli, the Mahindra S201 measures less than four metres in length. The front-end is lavished with LED headlamps with U-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights, a six-slot grille that is typical of all Mahindra models, and a new bumper with a different air intake. The rear-end gets horizontally-placed LED taillamps, a new bumper, and a new tailgate with the number plate housing. As confirmed in the latest as well as earlier spy images, the interior of the S201 will be almost exactly like that of the Tivoli and benefit from the Korean SUV's feature-richness. The cabin wears a beige & brown colour theme with silver trim around the aircon vents and on the steering wheel. The dash sports a touchscreen infotainment unit that is likely to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are several cubby holes around the cabin. The gearlever is flanked by two cup holders at one end as well as a storage area below the centre console. The front door pockets can carry a couple of bottles each, while even both the rear doors offer a bottle holder. Furthermore, there's a storage space right above the glovebox.Electric sunroof and dual-zone automatic climate control are likely reserved to the top-spec variant. The safety features include all-wheel disc brakes, seven airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, and front and rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera.

The front door pockets of the Mahindra S201 offer two bottle holders each. The Maruti Vitara Brezza challenger will launch next month and is expected to have a starting price of INR 6.5 lakh
