A heavily camouflaged mule of the facelifted Kia Picanto has been photographed during its winter testing programme. When the production model reaches the UK later this year, we expect it will adopt some of the updates added to its recently revised sibling, the new Hyundai i10, giving the city car a substantial technology and safety equipment upgrade.

Styling updates for the new Picanto appear to follow the same pattern as those applied to the new Hyundai i10, with fresh headlamps, updated daytime running lights, new front and rear bumpers, mildly tweaked door skins and a new tailgate. Like the Hyundai, the Kia looks to be slightly longer than its predecessor with a longer wheelbase.

The outgoing Picanto and i10 shared the same engine range – a trend we expect will be carried over to this new model. As such, base-model Picantos should come with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit with 66bhp and 96Nm of torque, while more expensive variants will probably feature a 1.2-litre four-cylinder developing 83bhp and 118Nm of torque.

Standard equipment should also be similar to the i10’s, with buyers getting air conditioning, a DAB radio, four electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors and cruise control. There will also likely be a choice of alloy wheel styles, ranging in size between 15 and 16-inches, as well as an eight-inch infotainment system on higher-specced models.

Australia’s best-selling city car, the Kia Picanto, has had a minor makeover and big lift in technology.

The 2021 Kia Picanto, unveiled in South Korea overnight where it is sold as the Kia Morning, gets a redesigned nose, new tail-lights and rear bumper.

On the technology front, the new Kia Picanto gains the availability of rear cross-traffic alert and blind zone warning, however it is unclear is these features will appear on examples sold in Australia.

Forward crash alert and city-speed autonomous emergency braking are already standard on models sold in Australia and are likely to carry over onto the new model.

The pricing and timing of the new Kia Picanto in Australian showrooms is yet to be announced, but CarAdvice understands the updated model is due in August.

A facelifted version of the Kia Picanto has been launched, with the updated city car set to rival the recently revealed third-generation Hyundai i10.

The new Picanto features a range of styling updates, a host of technology upgrades and three revised powertrains. The updated model range is due to go on sale in the UK this autumn, with first deliveries expected to arrive towards the end of the year.

On the outside, the new Picanto gains updated headlamp units with restyled LED daytime running lights, fresh LED tail lights and an updated version of the brand’s trademark “Tiger Nose” radiator grille. Buyers will also have their choice of 10 paint finishes and two alloy wheel designs, in either 14-inch or 16-inch sizes.

Changes in the cabin major on updated technology. The Picanto gets a new 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster and an eight-inch infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter is an inch larger than the old Picanto’s touchscreen and can pair with two devices at the same time – one via Bluetooth and one through a USB connection.
